Switch to Soy...

My daughter has been a gassy girl with reflux since day one. I was told by our doctor that this should come to an end around 3 months. I know that no baby follows a specific time table. My daughter recently was switched to formula because it was found that I have a hyperactive thyroid and could no longer breastfeed. My daughter is really gassy and arches and screams in gas pain. We had started her on emfamile lipil but recently switched her to prosobee. I have heard some controversal things about using soy formula. Have any of you guys had any experience with soy helping reduce gas?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

All three of my boys tolerated soy formulas well. I started out breastfeeding, but eventually had to supplement. With the first two I tried dairy-based formulas first, but ended up on soy because of reflux issues. When I was breastfeeding, if I ate ANY dairy (even cream in my coffee!) my sons would spit up. If I did not eat any dairy, they did not spit up.) My third son is now on Similac Isomil Advance, and tolerates it very well.

My daughter had that same problem, she started on enfamil and then her ped gave us samples to use a week each and see which one helped her the most, the prosobee was the last on the list to try and the least expensive! She's been on soy for almost 5 months now and we have tried other brands of soy just because we were given cans from family that weren't prosobee and the granparents keep formula at their houses. We haven't had an issue with gas since we switch to soy, so it has def helped my dd, but every child reacts diff so try it out for a few weeks and if there's still no relief talk your ped about other possibilities. Good Luck!!

Hi,my name is C. first of all.Nice to talk to you.I have three daughters. All of them have had the same problem and we ended up giving them prosobee as well. That formula helped them out a alot. Now I really havent heard anything negative about it.Like I said it really has been good for my girls.Thats really all the information I could tell about that.

Hi J.!

I am a chiropractor and I have worked with many infants with digestive disorders. We can test for allergies using muscle testing and determine which type of milk or formula would agree with your daughter. Also, we can evaluate her digestive tract to determine if she would benefit from nutritional therapy or adjustments. If you are interested, or if you have questions, please don't hesitate to call me at ###-###-#### or ###-###-####. Thank you!

I would say that if your daughter is arching her back it's more likely reflux than gas pain, because usually with gas pain they will draw their knees up to their stomach. My son had both, a lot of gas and reflux. We switched to soy and that helped tremendously with gas, but the pediatrician had to put him on Zantac for the reflux. By the time we had both things changed, he was like a totally different baby. Just talk to your doctor, and don't let him blow you off. You have to keep in mind that you are paying him to listen to your concerns.

My son and I had many of the same problems that you talk about. In frustration, I too turned to a soy formula. It helped him a little bit. We struggled with him for years. I would tell the doctor about him and and they would almost always blow me off. I knew in my heart that he had reflux, however six years ago people were not that awear of reflux in infants. Two years ago (my son was 4) I took him to Dr. Vora he is an ENT doctor in Rockwall (Dr. Ripp's Office). He put him on Zantac for "Gerd" and this has made all the difference for my son. Hope this helps. Take care!

We switched my daughter to prosobee for the same reason and it was like night and day. It was the best decision we made to make her comfortable. She is 17 months old now and drinking milk just fine (and loves it!). I should add we did this for gas only. She didn't have reflux (although she spit up a lot!).

Hi J., At 7 months my son was still suffering from reflux and his doctor said that switching to soy wouldn't help with anything. So, he put him on Prevacid and Reglan to help. I wasn't comfortable with him being on those type of drugs so I tried switching to soy and I can't remember the last time he spit up! It helped us out tremendously.

we use gentlease ... by enfamil our liitle one is the same age as yours and acid reflux and gassy with the change to the gentlease supplement and axid for the reflux life's great! good luck.
