My family uses Microdine Hand Scrub. Microdine kills 99.99% of most germs, including MRSA, c-Diff, pneumonia, and influenza.

94% of the time, germs are transferred via touch -- i.e., through your hands touching an infected surface, and then touching your eyes, nose, and/or mouth.

Microdine is designed to be used 2-3 times per day, and to wash your hands normally between applications. Microdine binds electrostatically to your skin (meaning that it won't wash off - it comes off as your skin cells slough off), so your skin stays actively anti-microbialy for six hours.

We avoid using alcohol hand sanitizers. Besides the fact that alcohol dries out your skin, alcohol only works for about 5 seconds, and kills both harmful bacteria and the body's natural protection equally - meaning that after using alcohol, you will have completely clean skin on which germs will easily grow. Alcohol over-use has also resulted in alcohol-resistant strains of bacteria, including alcohol-resistant C-Diff, which is a big problem in hospitals.

Microdine products and extensive test results are available on-line at www.microdine.com.

I am a teacher, and you can be sure everything possible is done to see that the kids wash their hands. In my building, there are hand sanitizers on almost every wall.

If you are careful and send any child who is coughing or complaining of feeling sick to the school nurse, we can keep sick children out of the classroom.

Other than that, we have to take our chances. I have had only 3 children with bad flu symptoms, including high fevers, who have been out of class for a week or more. But, most of my children have been kept safe.

Good luck, and if you love teaching (as I do), it is worth the risk!!

I know when I taught, there wasn't anything additional I did. Just the same kinds of flu preventative anyone should do. My first year teaching, I got sick a lot. After that, I hardly ever got sick - a cold here and there and seasonal allergies, but nothing ever serious. In fact, I think I am the only one in my family that never gets the flu shot and has never had the flu, even after taking care of everyone else with it. I think I built up a lot of immunities over the years. Not sure if that's true, but it sure feels that way. :)

I'm not a teacher so can't comment on that. However, I do know some of the most important things you (and everyone else) can do is keep your hands off your face; wash your hands frequently; use a good antibacterial; get plenty of sleep; eat healthy; exercise; and take good quality nutritional supplements including Vitamin D.

The absolute best antibacterial is PureWorks. It contains no drying, flammable alcohol and no toxic chemicals. And unlike alcohol which is effective only until it evaporates (about 5 seconds), PureWorks is effective for 3, 4, even up to 5 hours. Check it out at www.protectedbypureworks.com.
