I live in the north side of town and am looking for reliable, inexpensive swim lessons for my four year old boy. There isn't a ymca near me and the private lessons i have researched are way out of my budget. Please help, my son wants to spend more time at the coast and lake and i want to feel more secure.

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all the good advice. I now have several options that i had not thought of before. The jcc is right down the street from me, and my mother had wanted to look into swim classes for herself also. Best to all.

I work and my son takes private swim lessons at Luv N Care Child Development Center 11230 Gathering Oak in Stone Oak area. Off Blanco and Wilderness Oak. The sessions are $80 dollars for 2 weeks. There are 2 lifegueard teachers. My son is 2 and is now a very independant swimmer after 1 session. The next session will begin on July 21. For info call ###-###-####

They aren't very inexpensive, but we have loved Love to Swim on Huebner and Churchill Estates. We are in our 2nd semester (our son is 4) and he can swim 30 feet already. I don't think the other kids in his small group (groups of 4 and sometimes 1 or 2 are absent) can, but since we travel and make sure to use every pool as much as possible, he has done well there. It sounds like you are also around water a lot so he might excel there too. The semi-private and private at Love to Swim are more expensive (out of our range), but they might advance faster since it's not a group of 4. I think the group of 4 is not unreasonable.

I would still not let him swim at the lake without a life jacket. He's going to have to be able to swim 100 meters before I'd feel anywhere near that comfortable. Unless you're in a very shallow area, the water is just too dark and you wouldn't have a chance to find him. The ocean also has a good undertow unless you know you've got a long shallow area.

Good luck!

My son just finished swimming lessons at the JCC--you don't have to be a member to take the lessons. It was $85 for a two week sesson--M-Th. Friday is a make up day in the event of rain. There are only 4 children to a group--so there is plenty of interaction.

My son was going to St Marys University...lessons were fairly inexpensive and he loved it. I know the summer program is over but the fall one is going to start in September. I know it isn't close to your home, but its a suggestion.

Love to Swim School on Huebner Road. Indoor lessons for infants, toodlers and children. We took our soon at 7 months. He is almost 2 now and has been asking to go swimming because he remembers his lessons there.

try swim teams. My son is in one at the jewish community center. They practice twice a week and the fee is 35 per month or 25 for members, I believe. Good luck.

Love to Swim School on Huebner Road is an excellent place for your boy to learn to swim. They have a website that you can explore before hand. I and my 2 1/2 year old boy are doing Baby and Me classes. The classes are held when it is convenient for you and the pools are heated and indoors. The pricing is reasonable. Good luck!!

Try Alamo Area Aquatics. They offer courses in two week incriments and have small groups. They are affiliated with Northside ISD.

Have you checked out the city of San Antonio? They're only $25 for a two-week session at the city pool nearest you. I would have done that, but my boy is only three and they start at age four.

I am doing the city of Windcrest's Swim Lessons. It's $50 for non-residents for a two week session, and they start at age 3.

Good luck!
