Sweating

I have a sort of embarassing question. I have a problem with under arm sweat during the summer and it can be very embarrassing! I have just started to look at some different solutions but am very nervous to try any but the deoderant I already use because I break out terribly when I use anything but Almay hypoallergenic deoderant. I wore a very cute, brand new dress to church the other day and was mortified to find I was very sweaty under the arms after teaching a lesson to a group of women. Surely I cannot be the only one with this problem! Any suggestions would be great!

So What Happened?

WOW!!! Thanks for the responses everyone. After trying very hard to find a balance between tough protection and sensitivity to my skin I found that Secret did indeed make a hypoallergenic version of the clinical strength antiperspirant/deodorant. It works like a charm! I even have options in case the problem becomes worse later on thanks to everyone suggestions. I can wear pretty much anything in confidence now! Thanks so much to all of you!

I've been using Mitchum deoderant. I compared it to secret clinical strength, and it looked like it had the same ingredients but it was way cheaper.

Good luck!

Hi A.,
I don't know if this works for sweating but I was told the other day (when I was telling one of my friends about my 7 year old daugther being musty) and she said to use some baking soda so you may want to try that. I haven't tried it yet because I think my daughter just isn't washing well, but if the problem persists, I'll try it.

I used to have the same problem. I know exactly how you feel. I use the clinical strenth deodorant and it works well for me. It's not expensive and you can find it anywhere. There are medications available as well as more intrusive options. There are some injections you can have done... I believe it's actually Botox they use.

I have dealt with the same problem since I was a teenager, and now I am 32. It runs in my family my brother and daughter do the same thing. I have tried many different things to solve the problem but have found only one that works 100%. I use a deodorant called Maxim. You order it over the internet or phone and it is made for Hyperhidrosis, which is excessive sweating. Go to this web site and it will give you a lot of information. www.coradhealthcare.com
Use the one for sensitive skin. I use the roll on. It takes a little getting use to at first, but follow the directions. Put it on at night and just a little bit at first. A little goes a long way. I use just a dab and rub it in. You have to work your way into this at first. I used a lot and it felt like ants biting me under the arms all night. It was the sweat glands shrinking. Now they have the sensitive one which is alot better. You don't have to use deodorant of a day time if you don't want, because you don't sweat under your arms.
I hope this helps.

I have had a very similar problem and have found a couple of things that work. The first is an anti-perspirant called "Certain Dri." You only use it at night and it started working for me after my first use. The good thing with it is, you don't have to use it every night. Recently I've started using Secret Clinical Protection deodorant and I really like it. I have VERY sensitive skin and while the Certain Dri worked extremely well, it made my underarms a little sore. The Secret deodorant seems to be more gentle, but works very well!

If you don't want to try a new deodorant...you might look into having your hormones checked. I know it sounds weird, but I found out that when my hormones were "out-of-whack" was when my sweating was at its worst.

And, a simple solution...try putting a few folded tissues under your arms...they'll help soak up the sweat before it gets to your shirt!

Good luck!

I used to have the same problem in highschool and tried everything under the sun until I found Certain Dri. You can buy it at WalMart and Walgreens now. It's not a deoderant. You put it on at night (on clean arm pits) and it closes your pores. Then you put on your usual deoderant/anti-perspirant in the morning. My pharmacist recommended it to people who had sweaty feet and hands, too. I used it every night for a couple of years and have never had a problem since. That was 10 years ago. If it doesn't work for you, see a dermatologist. They can give you a Rx and can probably offer help for your sensitive skin as well.

My name is K. S and I have a business called Arbonne and live in Ala. I have had the same problem also. Two things that I want to suggest is first use pure alcohol on a cotton ball and wipe under your arms which will open the sweat ducts which may be clogged. Also, I would suggest that you detox your body. We are affiliated with toxins on a daily basis from our environment, foods, prescription drugs, etc. We have two ways to detox. One is a detox tea that you drink 3-5 cups a day and the other is 7 day cleanse that you do every few months. If interested in knowing more email or call me. K. ###-###-#### ____@____.com

try "certain dry." You don't necessarily need to use it every day (you might just try every few days to ensure you're not too sensitive). I have trouble w/ many antiperspirants also and this one doesn't bother me, however my husband can't use it. You should be able to find it at walmart, target or most drug stores.

My husband and his mom had the same issue. She uses Mitchum (sp) it's in a green container like Degree. My hubby will sometimes use that or the Degree Antibacteria. Other than that... we've tried everything and nothing worked. He even tried a melaluca deodorant and that gave him the worst sweatty/stinky shirts ever. He also wears a white t-shirt under his regular cloths. So if you can imagine, he's a pretty sweaty guy. I preffer the Mtchum cause the ladies scent choices are really yummy! Goodluck!

This is a crazy tip, but I use it and it works; get a bottle of listerine, not the mint or orange, the original burn the heck out of your mouth kind, and put a little on a cotton ball and clean the whole armpit and surrounding area. Leave it there for 30 seconds or more, then wipe it off. The listerine kills the bacteria that makes you sweat more and cause odor.

A., If you are using deodorant, you WILL sweat. If you use antiperspirant, you probably won't. You say you can only use Almay deodorant so I would suggest wearing underarm shields. They are also called dress shields. At certain times in my life I have needed to wear them to protect my clothes. Of course, a sleeveless top will not work with these. They will give you a layer of fabric between you and your clothes. You can usually buy them at fabric stores.

If you have an odor problem you can always stop eating animal flesh and that will be cured instantaneously but your description of the problem leads me to believe you only have a wetness problem.

Good luck.

Welcome to the club. I know exactly what you mean. I have this problem under my right arm only. I have named that arm pit Houston and anyone that lives there or has been there will understand why. I actually had to get a perscription for it. However now they have clinical strength deodorant that you can buy anywhere. Secret seems to be the best one. It is not hypoalergenic so it may cause a rash at first but my dermotoogist suggested using it before bed and NOT right after shaving and it is less likely to cause problems. Once you have done that for several days it should be ok to use it during the day as well. You might give it a try. Hope it helps.

I would not recommend using an anti-perspirant - sweating is not only the way your body regulates temperature, it's also the way it gets rid of toxins in your system. Blocking your sweat glands can lead to major health problems.

My problem is that my feet sweat heavily and, especially after being in shoes all day, smell bad. I put white vinegar in a spray bottle and hit my feet with it and let it dry before putting on shoes, and hit my shoes with it when I take them off at night. Myfeet still sweat, but not as heavily, and my shoes don't knock my husband out when I take them off.
Try putting white vinegar in an atomizer and spritzing your pits with it and letting it dry before you get dressed.

Ok, in College (1992ish) I had Electroloysis done on my pits and quit sweating!! I no longer wore deoderant! I started to need it again in about 1999 in 2001 I did laser hair removal and I asked the lady if that was one of the benefits and she said yes. She has a lady come 1 time a year for a "touch up" even though there is no hair left just so she can make sure she doesn't sweat anymore!! IT IS AWESOME!!

My daughter has had problems with this as well. We use something over the counter that i found at Wal-Mart called Ceradry(not sure of the correct spelling) it is in the isle with all the deodorants. You put it on once a day usually at night before bed and then we used Mitchum for woman during the day. It really helped her.

About 2 years ago I got a prescription for a product that you put on at night, it worked great, unfortunately it made me break out! I have thought of trying Secret Clinical-it's about $9 at Wal-Mart. You could try it, but with sensitive skin it may be difficult to find something. I know it's awful, you feel gross and like you smell all the time and change your shirt twice a day! I can sympathize! Sounds like a common one to try- but - Ban roll-on (only the roll-on) ANTIPERSPIRANT works great for me. I also found out once that I'd smell if I didn't put it on towards the front of the pits right where the bend begins. I guess I had been in a hurry a couple time and swiped it too far back and didnt cover the spot that did the output or whatever! But, one time - I also tried switching brands a broke out bad. I switched cuz a friend gave me a bunch of Secret she got free. Secret is supposed to be gentle enough for a woman -right? Not me I guess. Good luck with BAN antiperspirant!

I would discourage the use of deodorants & especially anti-perspirants. Instead, use more natural and eco-friendly methods to reduce armpit odor: baby wipes, cornstarch, baking soda, water.

Recent medical research loosely connects under-arm shaving and frequent use of anti-perspirants/deodorants, to breast cancer. So DO NOT use these products frequently/daily, esp those that contain some parabens - look up their ingredients.

Sweating from armpits is normal. It regulates body temperature and flushes away some minerals & urea. Though sweat in itself is almost completely odorless, the bacteria that grows in our armpits multiplies rapidly in the presence of sweat, thus causing odor.

So if you clean your underarms more often, the odor will be greatly reduced. I would suggest keeping baby wipes in your bag and wiping down your armpits every time you use the restroom. Try dusting lightly with a talc-free powder or regular cornstarch, for a dry feeling. Equal parts of corn starch and baking soda help absorb odors. Drinking enough water also reduces odors (but not sweating).

Lastly, don't stress too much about your sweating problem, because stress is the number one reason for more sweating ... its a vicious cycle! Relax. Just think about the benefits of sweating - its healthy for your body, it releases pheromones and is attractive to the opposite sex (at some base level)!

I stuggle with the same problem. It's hard to feel beautiful and feminine with soggy underarms! Two deoderants that really work for me are the new Secret clinical and the regular Degree. I have had heard that Mitchum is good too, but haven't tried it. I haven't had any problems with breakouts from the strength, but it could effect you diffrently. If you have the money....you could get Botox injected in you underarms and end the sweating all together! You should see what your doctor has to say, there could be something they could prescribe for you.

First things first LOL Underarm shaving, under wire bras and Antiperspirant/deodorants have NOT been linked to breast cancer as any causative factors! They may irritate the area after cancer surgery but they do NOT cause it. As a 9 year survivor of a breast cancer that was so virulent that the docs gave me less than 5% chance of making it 30 days, I make it my business to keep up with ALL the latest research on this subject.
Now as to the problem of excessive sweating, I have found that soaking cotton balls in alcohol and using them to "wash" the pits morning and evening for about a month helps to shrink the pores causing sweating in that area to decrease and that by using those cute little "zit pads" that they have also helps alot.
Good luck with that.

There is this new Clinical Strength Deodorant from Secret that is supposed to be just for this situation. I am pretty sure it is hypoallergenic, but don't hold me to it since I haven't looked. When I played sports in high school, womens deodorant wasn't working for me, so I started using men's deodorant. I used the Gilette, but Speed Stick works pretty good to. Also, if nothing else works, you can get a doc (dermatologist I think) to prescribe you a stronger deodorant. Good luck, I know how much it sucks.

Also, there is an herbal supplement my mom made my little brother take because he had horribly sweaty feet and it would make his shoes stink like something dead. Not sure what its called, but it made his feet almost stop sweating completely.

Hi A.. I too sweat 'like a man'. Ironically, I've been told you inherit your sweat glands which would explain it all if it's true(my dad). So, I have a friend, also named A., who not only had armpit sweat but palms & feet--she had her sweat glands removed-from under her arms & she too STILL sweats. (not her palms though for the lady who wrote in) but not near as much. So, she & I have tried every deodorant out there & nothing has totally rid of it. I have to plan my wardrobe around it year round. In the winter-my entire body will be freezing but my armpits-sweaty. ?? I can't figure that one out-geez. Summer-always sleeveless--white, black, navy, brown etc. or a material that doesn't show sweat really. I never wear tees when outside in public & I'm at a ton of baseball games. With all that said-I just keep different items in my purse. The facial wipes for oil, baby powder, a fan or even the battery operated misting fans. My only suggestion would just be to make sure you shower daily-wash your armpits in a restroom as needed-powder-spray-at least to keep from smelling. btw-I always fan in church! I've always sworn I was going to invent something to absorb pit sweat so maybe that will be an option one day. =)=)=) good luck! at least now you know you're not alone. God Bless! ~L. C.

Hi A.,
Being a health & wellness specialist for the past 4 years. Just wondered if you ever tried a detox system? Like detox tea, or detox bath products? I use to have horrible nite sweats for years, I would wake up soaked and have to change my sheets and clothes in the middle of the nite. If someone had shared with me about this stuff, and about natural progesterone cream it could have helped me so much. I used this cream 10 days (rubbed a pump, like lotion) on a tender skin area and drank this detox tea and nite sweats are GONE...for the past 3 years. Wow!
