my son in 16mnths old and can say about 6 words (pretty average for his age) that we can understand. (mama, dad, again, done, yeah, and nana for banana) he has been going through this adorable little mimic phase lately as well. so he was sitting on the floor this morning paging through a book and babling like he was reading the words and then comes up to me and hands me the book. i pull himm into my lap and read it to him and when i close it he pats the book and then looks at me and says "can we read it again." as clear as day i was so shocked i couldnt say anything at first finally i laughed and said sure we can read it again. and he giggled. i guess i shouldnt have been that supirsed because even though he mostly babbles (well more like toddler gibberish) he will say clear sentences out of nowhere. what have your babies done developmently that has shocked you?

My daughter and I are both deaf, so she's been exposed to sign language right from birth. Recently, though, she's started REALLY ramping up her communication attempts. Now, though, she will randomly sign words, and she's beginning to put two signs together, sometimes three. It's amazing to watch the difference between now and six months ago! She's now making "jokes" (as such), and she's too freaking adorable!

Well my son is older, 4 years old... but sometimes out of the blue, he will tell me "I love you Mommy... you're the best Mommy in the whole wide world..." And it makes me cry inside. No one taught him to say that, and I don't know where he got that phrase... and it makes me look at him with such wonderment each time he says that to me....

Or when my daughter (or even my Husband) is being 'fussy' at me... my son will step in and say "stop it! Mommy doesn't like that" and he will hug me. He is so young... but already "protects" me... his Mommy.
Like a little man.

all the best,
Susan

My second 'baby' who does not test well like the first 'baby' got a HUGE score on his PSATs, while he will still be taking an SAT prep class, I feel SOOOO much better about life in general when we got his scores! I think he's gonna be JUST FINE!!!

My 2.5yo will repeat phrases that he's heard at totally different times out of the blue. "Oh, it sure is, mama!"

But my favorite was the day that I discovered he can speak Spanish (our nanny speaks fluently). He's picked that up from her without her actively trying to teach him!

My youngest DD comprehension has always surprised me. She picked up a wrapper one day when she was about 9-10 months old. I jokingly said "Oh hey can you throw that in the trash for me?". She walked right over and threw it in the trash can. I was floored! Since then we've learned that she can understand a huge amount of what we say.

aw, i love those moments. I like it when my youngest shows her comedian personality. She can get grown men giggling. I think she will be naturally hilarious, and when she does do these things my eyes well up with tears. Its her shining through.

My daughter is 3 and goes to preschool 2 days a week. I always struggled in school when I was a kid with being teased and bullied - I tended to be more of a "target" and the last thing I want is more my DD to go through the same thing. One night, when we were snuggling before bed, she told me at school that day that a girl pinched her. I said, "Oh she did? What did you do?" And she told me, "I told her that was mean, it was not nice, and don't do it again! And then I growled! Grrr!" I just about fell on floor - hopefully I won't have to worry about her not standing up for herself!

he remembers things years later, that we have never really talked about again or took pictures of.... clear as a bell memory.

"Remember when we got ice cream from the ice cream truck and I got a Dora popsicle and ate it on the playground then went to the library?'

it happened when he was 3... now he's 5.

A week or so ago, my daughter (2 1/2) was playing with some kind of stick in the door know lock (one that requires a skeleton key) of my bedroom. I asked her what she was doing since i was sitting maybe 6 ft away, not worried about it. She told me, verbatum, ?Mommy, just keep reading your newspaper, please". She also had her hand on her hip and was shaking her head in that way when you are kind of thinking "DUH". Also, yesterday I got some gifts for her from her godmother and she found the bag later in the evening. She is just getting the idea of Christmas. She looked at the packages and said "Oh, mommy, this is for Kismas?". I told her yes but she could not open them yet. "Okay". Then , "Oh my God, this is for Kismas?" (2nd package and then again for 3rd and 4th). The other day her phrase was "what the heck".

My oldest is in Kindergarten and she is just learning to spell quite a few words but last night after asking me if "wild" was a real word and if so what it meant, she asked how to spell it. I told her to sound it out. And she did. W - I - L - D. Guess its not too surprising considering she is in Kindergarten, but it still amazes me how much she has learned in just 4 months from being in school. Just this past Sunday she was writing out the words for 1-10. In the summer she couldn't even recognize all her letters.

My youngest, can maneuver the Nick Jr website like nobody's business. She is also very good at working the mouse and using arrow keys. I think she is going to be quite the gamer. (Like her dad)

My 2y/o is a constant talker at home and around close family. At daycare, she hardly talks at all (by my own observation and what her teachers tell me). But, I love it when she figures out how to say a new word or phrase--just out of the blue. Driving home she'll point something out and say "Man riding bicycle" or "moon hiding by clouds" or some other phrase. She also likes to count things and can count up to 6 (on her own) and 14 (with help)!! I also love when she gets the connection between things: "Mama, what's that?" Me: "That's a hospital. People go there when they have a big owie." Her: "Bella big owie. Bella go hospital." Or like when she first started noticing the cats and would call them "kitty." Then she learned that the black cat is named "Nabi," so both cats were called "Nabi." She's finally learning that there are lots of cats & kitties, and they all have names (Nabi, Reina, Tigger, Luna)!!

My son is 14 and has surprised me continually throughout our life together. When they are little it is the milestones - walking, talking, sharing, showing empathy and compassion for the first time. Oh, making his first joke...turned out he has quit the ability for puns. Spontaneously saying "I love you" for no reason was a lovely surprise!!!

As I watch him grow into a teen I am struck by his compassion for others and his concern for his friends, our family and our pets, his mercurial mood swings, and odd eating habits when going through growth spurts.

Children are constantly and consistently surprising us. It is one of the joys of being a parent. Isn't it great?

Enjoy your son and know that he will continually surprise you throughout your life together.

My husband got me an Ipad for my birthday. My three year old navigates it better than I can. He knows how to get from movies to (kid) music to games and back again without batting an eyelash. And he's quick about it! Just watching him swish (yup, I meant swish (not switch, as it's a big production for him...huge arm movements when little finger flicks would do the job...LOL)) from page to page cracks me up!
