Supportive and Positive Ob/gyn in the North Tampa Area

I am trying to find a new dr after my old dr chastised me about gaining "too much" weight...17 lbs at 24 weeks...he believes my total gain should be 25, 30 at the MOST. This philosophy has driven me to a borderline depression and certain self loathing that I didn't have before and believe to be harmful. At the very least, it has sucked the joy right out of being pregnant! I am having a hard time finding anyone happy to take on a pregnant woman mid way through. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I tried getting into to Partners, but didn't get a response after having some difficulty getting someone on the phone to accept the transfer at all. Although I've heard great things about them from a lot of people, I was a little gun shy when I couldn't easily get in contact with a live person. I had my first appointment at The Woman's Group in New Tampa. While the wait was EXTREMELY long (my appointment was for 9:45, I didn't get into the doctor until 11:15) the atmosphere and attitudes of the staff and doctor were so refreshing! Hopefully the long wait isn't the norm, but if so, as long as there aren't any other drawbacks, I couldn't be happier! Thanks for the tips everyone! Oh, also delivering at St Josephs instead of Pasco Regional now....VERY HAPPY ABOUT THAT TOO!

J.,

I have a group of doctors I have been extrememly happy with for both of my pregnancies. I didn't gain much weight with either pregnancy (I'm 8 mos now), so I don't know how they deal with that if they feel it is an issue. The group is Insignia Care for Women and they have two offices...one off of Bruce B Downs and Bearss and one off Armenia. I believe they only deliver now at UCH-Fletcher which is where I had my daughter and had a wonderful experience even with a couple of complications late in pregnancy. I don't know if they have availability at your stage of pregnancy, but it is worth a shot. I see Dr. Jones, but they are all extremely nice (Dr. Greenberg, Dr. Wilkerson, Dr. Irani all stand out in my mind). Hope that helps.

Hi J.,

I gained a ton of weight with my first pregnancy (55 pounds)and my doctor didn't say much of anything to me. An occasional, whoops, you put on 5 pounds this week, but nothing more than that. I LOVE my doctor & all the doctors at The Women's Group in New Tampa on Amberly Drive. The doctor who delivered my child is Dr. Silvia Bevilacqua. She's very laid-back, to the point and has a great sense of humor. Can't say enough about her and the care I received at The Women's Group.

You deserve to be treated well and have a doctor who cares. Hope you find someone that you're comfortable with!
Jan :)

I want to second the above recomendation for The Women's Group in New Tampa on Amberly Drive. I was very pleased with all of the doctors there and at their MLK office. I recomend them to everyone and have had no complaints.

I saw the post regarding Labor of Love...they ARE wonderful.

Hi J.,

AS a doula who had worked in this area for quite a few years, I can tell you that many of the Dr.'s attitudes have changed very recently.
Many that were laid back no longer are due to fears of malpractice claims. In my experience, I would highly recommend that you make the drive to south Tampa and see the women at Women's Health Care. They deliver at Tampa General. If you really don't want to drive down there then I suggest you go to Partners in OBGYN. They have an office on Fletcher.

The first number is ###-###-#### and the web site is www.whcflorida.com. The second number is ###-###-####.

Feel free to contact me off post directly.

Have a wonderful pregancy and birth experience.

I love my OBGYN. He delivered both of my children C-section due to complications but he is GREAT at wht he does and has a wonderful bed side manner. He is on Dale Mabry South of Carrollwood. It's about 30 minutes from me (I am in New Tampa) but well worth the drive. Plus he delivers at St. Joseph's womens which is the only place I would have my children beacuse of the children's center. His name is Dr. Sporn and his # is ###-###-####. I wish I knew if he was taking on new patients but you can tell him I referred you for sure. If you want to talk more please call me at ###-###-#### I would be happy to talk to you :-) First time pregnancy is supposed to be exciting for sure!!!!

I heard Labor of Love is a great place and I believe they will take you at 24 weeks. You might also want to touch base with Wendy at Doula Difference (she is on Mamasource). She was our Doula and I know she could recommend a great practice for your needs. Good luck. As long as you and baby are healthy, keep doing what you are doing. I don't know why ob/gyn's make such a big deal about weight. A midwife who was part of my practice never was concerned about my weight gain but the ob's were. Weird!!!! Just stay healthy!!
