Suggestions for Clothing Brands for Big Baby

My 10-month old is very big (31 lbs, over 32" tall). I'm having trouble finding pajamas to fit him. Many pjs are made to fit snug for safety purposes and are very tight on my son's arms and legs. I'd like to find cotton sleepers with feet, because he has mild eczema and scratches his feet. Does anyone have suggestions for brands of clothing that are roomy?

What can I do next?

My son never stopped growing from the day he was born. I liked baby gap there sleepers went up to 5T. I also used Carters but not the one with feet. I found a one piece kind of like union wear (with snaps up the front) and put socks on his feet. I also found some at Farm and Fleet but those store are only in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Best of Luck

Hi Erin~
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
I had very big babies and I found that Children's Place always fit the best. I liked too that they had regular sleepers and blanket sleepers . . . my big babies were sweaters too!
As for the eczema my doc had me using Aveeno.
Good luck!

I like the Carters store on Randall Road. My daughter is also bigger and I've found thing there that fit her comfortably.

i think target and carters jammies are roomy through the middle area...they do not run long however. i would suggest going up a few sizes to fit the length and the middle will be comfy as can be. target shrinks more than carters but i have tried numerous jammies and these are the ones i find seem the most comfortable and affordable. the old navy and gap are adorable but i wouldn't want to sleep in something so consricting so i hate to put my daughter in them. good luck!

Hi Erin,
My son, now 3, was 11 lbs and 22 ins at birth so I've had you're problem in the past. I too found Carter's to be great. There clothes seem to run a bit bigger then the rest. Currently at 3, he's in a 5T or a 4 regular as he's sill a "tall boy". I do still have trouble finding him footie pjs as God seems to have given him huge feet as well. Good luck!

We had the same problem, as my ds was large. A couple sizes larger just bunched up. I finally gave up and went to Target for Hanes sweats. We used those as jammies. They often have them 2/$7 or 2/$9.

Carters makes great pajamas...my son was big too and I just bought a size up. They have great fleece ones with feet for the winter and thinner cotton pjs for the summer. You can usually find them at a lot of stores...Kohl's, Macy's, Carson's...Good luck!

Hi Erin.
My kids were not 'tall and tooth pick like' like they make clothes for kids these days... I had the best luck at, believe it or not, Walmart, when they were younger. It has been a while, but your little guy sounds like he's toddler size. If it comes down to it, you could sew slipper socks (just the ankle & foot part) to a pair of sweat pants, and see it that works for the scratching. The pj's wouldn't be flame retardant, but at least they would be comfortable.

Dont buy Gerber.....they run small. Target has jammies on a end cap I think and they are Circo brand one piece with zippers....they are inexpensive and good jammies. Otherwise I would hit a Carter's outlet or the Children's place usually have like 3 for $20.00

I found that carters are roomier than gerber sleep & plays. My daughter needs the extra room since we put a bulky cloth diaper on for the night. It tends to fit...especially by the second day no problem.

I, too, have a big baby (with a long torso to boot)... Carter's has always been pretty good for PJ's, as well as shirts. The Carter's outlet in Pleasant Prairie has been my saving grace.

I don't know if this will help but I personally stay away from anything that is flame retardent. Those clothes are very chemical laden and it may contribute to a skin condition, asthma, etc. As your baby wears them, their body heat makes the chemicals off gas and your child breathes them in. I like the sleep sack idea so I looked it up, here's a link for larger sleep sacks that go all the way up to 3T/40lbs:

Cheers!

My son was also a very big boy during his first two years of life. He is now 3 and wears clothes that 5 year olds should be wearing. I always found that JC Pennys clothes were more stretchable and seemed to fit him better than any other brands. I hope that this helps.

Have you tried Carter's? They have very comfortable pjs for babies and toddlers in a range of sizes and selections.

As for the eczema, I don't know that I'd cover it up all the time. I have it also and it can be very bothersome. If I were you, I'd talk to your doctor about a cream to help your son calm the "itchies", presciption or OTC. Then put light socks on him overnight so he doesn't get overheated.
I use Eucerin Calming Itch-relif Treatment. I also have used it on my 2 yr old son.

I too find that Carter's are the roomiest. Old Navy clothes are definitely made for skinny babies! I have to buy at least one and sometimes 2 sizes larger with Old Navy.

Erin,

My daughter was large like that as an infant. She was born at 10lbs...and was 32lbs, and 32in. at 1yr. Now, she's 5'7", about 120 and a size 3! Go figure! Can we bottle her secret?? Anyways...we always used the 100% cotton waffleknits. Carter's carries alot like that in pj's so did JCPenney and Kohls. At times in summer, we just did tshirts with a diaper to give her that "breathing room". At least its going to warm up soon and he'll need less clothing.
Good luck,

J.

You can put him in childrens p.j.s and roll up cuffs. What does dr. say about this weight? It's easy for us to stick our heads in the sand when it comes to our children mommy but for health reasons, cut back on whatever you are feeding him..His little heart is probably straining. Exercise him. Is he walking? Get him in a bouncy chair so he can follow you all over the house..Stop carrying him except when necessary or during cuddleing. He'll thank you for it later in life. Good luck mom

My Kids favorite pj's are Hanna Andersson. The are made w/organic cotton so it would be helpful for your baby's skin. They wash really up really soft, no pilling or misshaping. I have passed dowm my son's first pair of pj's to my next two kids and they are still in great condition. A little pricey, but worth it!!!

Erin, I don't think it matters much the brand. I do know what you mean about it being tight on the arms, that stinks for babies. I really dont use the rule about making sure it's 12 months clothing for 12 month old babies. It's usually worthless, because so many times clothes are too small (even for babies!) I would buy whatever fits him properly, and i think many of us really do buy a bigger size of just good old cotton PJ's and make sure they arent scratchy. And, many people dont buy PJ's in the thought of their home burning down- the reason that they make them tight. As for the eczema. Remember, feet make him sweat more potentially, so you have to figure out how to combat the itching at night and not make him to hot at the same time. I have two boys who both had exzema and we used thinner softer PJ's and a light blanket or two and kept the house at 70. We used some different creams and then eucerin cream over the top. Footed PJ's were too hot and scratchy to put on either of the boys. You might consider a very light pair of cotton socks, maybe even a pair of light girls bobby socks if necessary, since maybe thin boys socks might be a bit tricky to find.

Let us know how it goes

Try a sleep sack! They come in all types of fabrics, fleece for cold weather to cotton for warmer weather. They also have the option of holes for feet for when kids are walking. With the sleep sack he can just wear a diaper and undershirt. Halo is a brand that makes lots of different sleepsacks.

Erin,

I have two boys and I hate it when their pajamas are too tight. I love Target's thermal long johns, they are the JUST ONE YEAR brand from Carter's. They sell them in the baby section and they go up to 4/5T. They are sold in a package with the top and bottom. I always buy big and they stay on them but are not too tight. In the summer, I will put them in the pants and put on a white fruit of the loom t-shirt(or any comfy tshirt) in place of the thermal long sleeved shirt. You could always put the non slip socks with this to prevent the scratching. The best part is that they are only around $6 for the pair. Also, my 2 year old has had exzema on and off and my pediatrician said the best thing to use is Eucerin cream (not the calming cream just regular) CVS carries a generic brand that is alot less expensive. Also my friend who is a pharmacist told me I could use .5% cortaid(hydrocortizone cream) when my little guys was about 7 months. Not every drug store carries the .5% they usually have 1% so you might want to look around. This seemed to clear up the patches and then I would use the Eucerin cream to keep his skin hydrated. Good luck

I had to respond to your request because I have had to deal with a big boy and still do (he's 7 now). The best places I found for clothes that run big are Osh Gosh, Kids Gap and Lands End. I was able to get the right size or just a size bigger. Kids Gap is at the outlet mall in Aurora. It was so nice to get him clothes that weren't tight. Lands End I know is a bit on the expensive side, but you can go to their website and click on "overstocks". The prices here are great. I even get my son his school uniform there. I may need to buy them a few months early or out of season but the prices are worth it. And if you have to buy wide shoes Stride Rite is the best. There is a Stride Rite outlet in Wisconsin, they don't have one in Illinois that I know of. Good Luck!

Erin,
A couple different responses.

About your son's eczema, has he been tested for allergies yet? My daughter had really bad eczema on her face and we found out much later that she had allergies. She is allergic to eggs, peanuts, milk, wheat, the whole range. I am not one of those moms that says he does; however I didn't know that the shots babies receive are egg-based and she was allergic to eggs, therefore prolonging the eczema.

Second, I don't know if you use Aquaphor on his eczema; however we give my daughter a bath and slather her up (when she is still a little wet) and put her jammies on; face to feet. Her skin is amazing now!

Finally to your real question, I found that Carters worked for size and most are 100% cotton which is good for his skin too. Our pediatrician said to stay away from polyester so the skin irritation could begin to clear up.

I wouldn't try to buy clothes by the months, I would go by the weight or heighth. My daughter was born at 10.2 and stayed in the 95% until she began to crawl/walk (which, by the way, crawling and walking can come later than others because they have to lift and carry a little more than others.)

Good luck!
