Suggestions About Switching My 11 Month Old to Whole Milk...
I have an 11 month old and would really like to start her on whole milk. She's pretty much weaning herself right now from the breast. I already know that she hates formula, so what are your oppinions about starting her a month early on whole milk when the recommendation is 12 months? Or any other suggestions?
So What Happened?™
Thank you so much for all the responses. I am still nursing her which is good cause I thought she was going to wean herself. I'm just going to nurse until she wants to stop and then we'll deal with the milk issue later...Thanks everyone!

It will be fine I started my daughter on whole milk at 10 months it was by accident but she liked it and so we started giving it to her.

My son weaned from breast milk at 11 months too. His pediatrician said it was fine to start him on regular milk and my son had no problem whatsoever. So, go for it!

12 months for whole milk is just a guideline, and if your baby hasn't shown a tendency toward allergies, It's probably fine to start her on whole milk at 11 months. You can always check with your pedi if you're unsure. Just call the advice nurse.

goat milk, goat milk, goat milk! It's closest in composition to breat milk... kids can't digest cows milk very easily until they're older than two (even though it's in many infant formulas) and giving it to them too early can cause allergies to develop... Don't know what access you have to natural groceries, but Myenberg goat milk can be found fresh or powdered. hope that helps...

It will probably depend on your baby's tummy and if will allow it. We tried weaning our son at 11 months by mixing formula and milk to get him over to milk and his tummy was not ready. He got the runs for over a week before we realized it was the milk. As soon as we went back to all formula in his bottles he got better. We tried again around 13 months and he took milk fine. But our older son switched over beautifully in his 11th month. I'd check with your doctor and she what he/she says.

I just saw our ped and my son will be 1 on Feb 15th. He said anytime between 11 and 13 months to start whole milk. You could call your ped to double check. You might just try 2 ounces here and there or mix with pumped milk to start.

I don't think 1 month early would be an issue 12 months is just a guidline. You may want to consider whole goat milk instead of cow milk. The cellular structure is quite different from cow milk and much easier for infants/toddlers to digest - less tummy upset.

I nursed my son as well and never gave him formula. My sons pediatrician recommended that I start giving him whole milk when he was 10 months old and was showing that he was ready. I started with adding it to his cereal in the morning. Then would do 2 oz a day for a couple of weeks and then slowly added more. By the time he was a year old he was on whole milk during the day and I still nursed him at night. It actually seemed to help fill him up a little more as well. The transition was easy. Good luck!

It would probably be wise to speak with your pediatrician.
