When ever my youngest has the slightest bit of sugar he gets major diarrhea, so the dr told us to take him off sugar.. This is almost impossible to do completely. He just turned 4 years old a few days ago and is still no potty trained because of how bad this can get.
Do anyone else have this problem?
People have suggested using Splenda, but I don't know anything about it.. Is it sugar? Do you think it would be worth the try?

What can I do next?

My son has something simalir to this. We just try and watch very careful what he eats and drinks. We have noticed that gatorade is a big problem. Maybe it could be one thing over another. Splenda is derived from sugar.

Hello C.,

Don't believe all the information that is at the web. Just believe from scientific resources, you can check at the NIH library http://www.nihlibrary.nih.gov/ all the journals and scientific research about Splenda or maltodextrin.

The best I'll recommend to you, is to contact a register dietitian, who will guide you with your son's diet . It's obvious that he has a carbohydrate intolerance. So the dietitian will help you a lot.

Good luck!

Sylvia

Have you considered looking at the South Beach Diet book? It's not a diet but a lifestyle change. Basically you cut all sugar out of your diet- that includes enriched flour (which is in most junk food, crackers, cereal, etc.) The SBD teaches you that you can break your brain's sugar addiction in two weeks and never want sugar again! I used it to get rid of my post-pregnancy weight. I was able to go thru an entire Halloween season without the temptation of eating sweets. Just talk to your DR. first because during phase one (the first 2 weeks) you can loose 15 lbs.
If you want to know anything else or want to get our boys together (my boys are 2 and 4, and I have a daughter 5 months) ffel free to contact me.

Have you tried adding BRATY foods to his diet?
B - Bananas
R - Rice
A - Applesauce
T - Toast (dry, white)
Y - Yogurt

These foods are all constipating if used in excess and I have been told by several peditritians that this is the best way to slow down diarrhea.

Also, when I was a kid, I had a really long list of allergies - among them sugar, cow milk, goat milk, soy, rice milk, nuts, chocolate and tap water. I was treated for many of my allergies with NAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Treatment) accupressure/accupuncture treatments. Thanks to those treatments, I am virtually food-allergy-free.

Splenda is "made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar" but that doesn't mean it is natural - or even good for you. The sugar is processed to remove part of the chemical makeup that causes our bodies to process it as a carbohydrate and provide us with energy (calories). My own personal opinion is that Splenda has it's place in some products and for some people. For someone who is diabetic, an occasional treat made with Splenda could be enough to keep them sane. I consider it to be a "food additive" rather than an ingredient I would want to ingest as a staple of my diet on a regular basis.

Stevia is a better non-caloric sweetener choice, but it can be rather expensive.

Sugar has very little, if any, nutritional value as it is and should be used sparingly. Where is he getting most of his sugar? Fruit juice, fruit snacks, cakes, cookies and ice cream can cause diarrhea for other reasons than it's sugar content.

Hi C., I read your post and wondered if you have considered switching him to Stevia. Its all natural and a sweetener. They sell it at all health food stores, Trader Joe's,etc. My husband is diabetic and he uses it in his ice tea, coffee, etc. It is also great in baking!! It isn't h*** o* the kidneys or the liver as compared to asparatame, etc. Good luck!!

splenda is definitely worth a try. It may or may not work because it comes from sugar in some way that I don't really understand. It tastes pretty good I switched over to it while pregnant due to gestational diabetes. I don't think he'll notice a difference because he isn't a sugar addict like me. They sell the small box I would start with that. You use it exactly like sugar.

Good luck

Hello C.,

A quick note just to urge you to please do some research on Splenda. I've read several accounts of many people having severe reactions to it.You may also try Stevia, it's an herbal substitute and completely natural, not ultra processed like other sugar substitutes, and they have it at Trader Joe's and probably Sprouts.
much luck!

It may not be the sugar, but an additive that goes with it. Many children are alergic to dyes and the wonderful other preservatives that are put into almost all of our foods. He could also have other digestive problems that have yet to be diagnosed. I would bring him to the Mayo Clinic. If they don't take your insurance and you can't afford it, ask about their charity plan. You are the mom and us moms have a way of knowing when something just isn't right. Trust that instinct.
I hope this helps.

Despite major media propaganda, Splenda is VERY unhealthy for you. A better alternative is Stevia, a natural herb that has been used in South America for thousands of years. It is the ONLY safe alternative to sugar on the market (when compared to artificial sweeteners). It has no calories, is 0 on the glycemic index, and you can cook and bake with it just like sugar. It comes in liquid and powder form. You can get it in the "natural" section of most grocery stores. Hope this helps!

Splenda is not all that it's cracked up to be - http://www.mercola.com/2000/dec/3/sucralose_dangers.htm

I would suggest trying the ALL natural Stevia - just as sweet (maybe sweeter) and it has many health benefits, is 0 calories, and you can use it just like sugar!!

I heard that Stevia White Sugar or Raw Brown Sugar is better. What are you making him with sugar? Maybe he's diabetic. There is other things besides sugar that could affect him. At Walgreens now, they have dye free, sorbitol free, flavor free cold medicines for the kids. Some products like Healthy Choice, even antibiotics have phenalyline (sp?) and that causes diarrhea too..

My son was allergic to everything from the berries group, eggs, everything made from corn, nuts, soy, etc. Now he's just allergic to corn and told to steer away from nuts, shellfish til he's 4.
