Hi. I'm researching becoming a substitute teacher for LCISD area. Once you submit your app and fee when do you start subbing? It's summer now so should I not expect a call till school starts in Fall? Do subs typically work 5 days a week if this is what I'm aiming toward?

What can I do next?

I've been a sub over 10 yrs in Plano.

If you've not had contact from HR, you need to do so. When a sub is accepted, you go to HR, submit forms, get direct deposit set up, complete profiles to let HR know what schools you will or will not sub, what grade levels, special Ed, ESL, etc. Once this us done and you go through training, you then get set up in the system and get your badge.

Once that is done, it's up to you as a beginning sub to get your foot in the door.

Most schools and grade levels have a preferred sub list. They dislike having to put a job in the sub "pool" because you never know what you'll get!

Try it out at several schools, several levels and see where your niche is then target on your niche.

I only sub at 1 of the 46 elementary schools. It's where my daughter went, 3 minutes from my house, and I am very connected at that school. I could sub 5 days a week but its not practical for me because I sub because I love it. I run our company and I only pre arrange my jobs which are not more than once a week unless it is conference or testing times. Subbing is a good mental outlet for me and helps me step away from the financial person I am with our company. It helps me balance everything out and I get to work with children.

I can say there is a shortage if subs willing to be a special Ed asst and that is a very good way to get your foot in the door. I love the special Ed so it was easy for me to start in that direction.

Start slowly and don't overwhelm yourself. The beauty of subbing is that you choose your schedule. Do you have children in school? Start by letting the school know you are beginning to sub. They may help you get in the door faster.

Good luck!

I have never been a sub, but I have been a teacher. Each school district, and sometimes each school, has it's own system. They might keep their own list or have a specific person whose responsibility it is to secure subs.

Do everything that you can on your end right now. Follow up with a phone call to see what the next step is. Schools need to have a list of subs before school starts, as you just never know when a sub might be needed.

How often you sub depends on what the need is, how many subs they have, what extra qualification you have. If you have a strong math is science background, that will obviously be a plus. Special Ed is a huge plus, as well.

Like I said do as much as you can right now. Call the district office to talk to someone about what else you need to do and what to expect.

This is per my State and each state varies:
It takes time to process the paperwork.
You have to complete it and get background checked and fingerprinted etc.
Then after completion, give it to the school you will be subbing for.
Then they turn it in.
Depending on your State's payroll system/employee system, then you will be in the system. Again, processing time varies.
And yes, it is summer. So no subbing now.
But in Fall when school starts, you may, be called.

How often a Sub works... varies. IF you are called. Or called back.
Some Subs work once a month. Some everyday. Some just sporadically. Some not at all.
It depends also on, if you are valued as a Sub/does a good job... then they may call you back more often. There is a system for the Subs, and how they are called and/or a list that is given to the school's teachers.
It really depends on, how your school/the school you will be subbing for, does it. Each system is different.

In my State, you cannot be a Sub..... UNLESS you have taken their courses and passed and got certified.
And you cannot even sign up for the Sub classes, unless you meet certain criteria/education etc.
