My almost 3 yr old I think has a sty and I have no idea what to do for it. She came home from her dads house on monday with a head cold and now she has this. Has anyone had this? I don't want to call her doctors I HATE THEM... I am looking for a new one so in the mean time I wanted to know if theres an over the counter thing or some kind of home remidie(sp) or something.

What can I do next?

I used to get those when I was young. My Mom would wrap the top of a wooden spoon with a hot washcloth (as hot as a child can stand anyway)and hold it over the sty. She would do this throughout the day off and on. The heat removes the infection and makes the puffiness go down. I don't recall any doctor visits from stys. Good luck. ~B.

My sister used to get them all the time- one of the best ways to relieve it is warm compresses- a warm wet washcloth- or recently a dr told my dad that a boiled egg works well because its the right shape and keeps the heat-- although strange to sit holding an egg on your eye- that will relieve the discomfort for her though- good luck

Hi M.

I get them every once in awhile. I used to get them when I was a kid all the time. They do go away by themselves but they can be really sore sometimes and itch like crazy when they start to heal!! You used to have to get something from the doctor but I did see something for them over the counter you can get now. I don't think it treats it it just helps with the symptoms. It is kind of goopy but so was the stuff I used to get at the doctors!! Hope this helps.

A sty is an infection of the tear duct basically and you can use a warm compress several times a day and according to WebMD you can also scrub gently with a tap water and a mild soap (like Baby shampoo). If it doesn't get better they may prescribe a topical or oral antibiotic. I would suggest you either find a new doctor or at least contact your old one. They may want to see her to make sure it's not too bad, they may recommend another otc treatment.

Good luck!

I know nothing about a sty, but I do know a great pediatrian. If you live in Toledo or the Perrysburg area. She's located by Levis commons in Perrysburg. Her name is Dr. Tracy Karolyi she's in with 5 other doctors. They have long hours and work on Saturday's. They are really good about getting you in to see the doctor if not your doctor then one within the practice. The number is ###-###-####. Hopefully this helps you find a doctor you love.

I agree with the first response above, however, if you read the label for Stye it's actually just vaseline and mineral oil ;-) So I've used a q-tip dipped in vaseline then in mineral oil and lightly dapped that on a sty and it worked just as well for me as the medication did. However, since it's a todler, DEFINITELY ask the pharmacist before treating her eye with ANYTHING. Good Luck!

Apply a warm compress (recommend using wet gauze - just water & no chemicals) to the eye for 10-15 minutes a few times a day. This will allow the inflamed area to come to a head and pop. Since it is in the eye area, do not attempt to lance the area. This is all my mom would do for me as a child and it would go away in a few days. If it lasts more than a few days, see a physician. There might be an antibiotic but of course that would require a doctors visit.

Just put a very warm, but not hot wash cloth on it, and it'll work it's way out. Especially if he was around pets. Usually it's a cat hair or something. They do kinda hurt, so don't push on it.

Take a warm washcloth and place on the sty. The warmth should push the puss out. Keep doing it until its all gone. You dont have to press hard. Just be gental. I had one a while back. HOpe this helps.

There is a medication called "Stye". I'm not certain if it can be used on a toddler, so you might want to check with the pharmacist. I normally can find this at Walgreens or CVS although you might have to ask one of the pharmacy techs to help you find it. (It's in a really small tube and doesn't have any flashy packaging to make it stand out.)

Make certain hands are being washed and everything touched is being sanitized- doorknobs, phones, faucet handles.

If the stye doesn't go away after a couple of days or develops a crusty film, take the child to the doctor or a walk in clinic- I know the one in Acme Grocery Store saw my husband for a stye with no problem (we thought it might be pinkeye).

M.,
Our Dr told us the only thing is heat like others have suggested. My daughter gets them to and had one for a long time. It went away eventually though and don't cause any pain...at least my daughter's hasn't.

Blessings.

They sell over the counter drops at probably every drugstore. It is pretty easy to get rid of.
