Stuffing a Diaper Bag

If you were going to use a diaper bag as a gift bag and stuff it with stuff, what would you put in it?

I've got some stuff already, but need more ideas. The mother-to-be (my sister) has mentioned in passing that she hopes she doesn't get a bunch of little stuff for her shower that she can buy herself at the grocery store (i.e. diaper cream, travel wipes, sippy cups etc).

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It was for my sister and off her registry. It was $100. I put some toys in it and a tube of Desitin because she hoped no one would ;) I just couldn't help myself. She also made comments about the glitter wrapping paper I used to wrap all the extra gifts inside and how it got all over her dress. Oh well.

diapers, wipes, disposable pads for changing, "poop" bags to dispose dirty diapers, a travel insulated bag for milk, a cold pack, an outfit....these are just some things that are ALWAYS in my diaper bag!

I'm a fan of M. afterbirth stuff so she has it all ready and it's funny to see what you stuff in there. I put gauze and vaseline for boys if they circumcise, pads for bleeding after birth, heat pad, chapstick for the hospital, hair tie, toiletries... you know, stuff people don't think about until you are in that hospital room or at home right after birth and you wish you had something to read or something to suck on since you can't eat.

OR... skip the "stuff" and buy her a diaper bag she would never buy herself, something really nice and just stick in a Cold Stone gift certificate or a mani-pedi.

No offense, but she sure is picky, lol! Put in things that you have found helpful. I usually fill them with everything needed for diaper changes and bathing, she wouldn't like my gift :)

This must be her first because she has no idea how quickly those "little things" add up! I recently did a shower gift for my SIL who was expecting twins and filled a couple storage baskets with all of those little things. I bought a slew of items from her list that were all under $10 each, I quickly had spend $120! But she is a wonderful (and in need) SIL so totally worth it!
Anyway...I got one of these travel changing pads for my 4th baby and am so upset I didn't have one earlier. I loved having my own (clean!) surface for changing him on a public changer or to protect bedding/flooring when changing him at someone else's house.

I would also recommend a nursing cover if she plans to breastfeed. My favorites were the ones that had a "viewing arch" at the top that allows the baby to be covered but mom can see down to him without shifting or holding anything. Hooter Hiders are like this but there are many others too. My other favorite nursing "accessory" was a nursing tank that clipped to a standard nursing bra rather than having straps of its own. I needed to wear a real supportive nursing bra but loved the idea of a nursing tank keeping my postpartum belly covered when I nursed. It was called an Undercover Mama nursing tank. LOVED those!
Hope you find something she will like.

ETA: Looks like the link may not have gone through, will try again. If it doesn't work you can search for travel diaper changing station on target's website.

I always give the most boring gifts at baby showers.

And then, invariably, get a VERY thankful call about a month after the baby is born. Here's what I give (probably, exactly the stuff she doesn't want) - generally some variation on this:
a copy of Baby 411
lanolin
infant tylenol
baby grooming stuff: nail clippers, brush, etc
gas drops
thermometer
travel sizes of baby shampoo, baby lotion, vaseline
simple baby socks and simple onesie, for the "emergency clothing change"
baby washcloths

Very boring. But it's all the stuff people forget to give you, and you forget to buy. But when you need it, you need it RIGHT NOW. So, I'd try to remember back on that - what did you have to send your husband out for, at 2 in the morning, or call your mom and say please bring this RIGHT NOW, or drag a very upset baby to the pharmacy for? Buy that. It's not exciting, I'll admit, but she'll love you about 2 months from now...

Well that makes it hard, you can buy anything at the store! lol...

Baby toys, rattles, hats, slipper socks, outfits, baby monitor, first stuffed animal, that's all I can think of for now. =)

Forgive me if this hits you wrong. I initially had the idea to fill it with all the things that I later read that she doesn't want. Of course, she can be comepletely uncensored with her sister, and it's nice to fantasize about the money that people will enjoy spending on her, but I think that it's horribly rude for her to try to dictate the amount of money that people spend on her. As long as they are useful to her, how dare she have such an attitude? A gift is not an entitlement, so WHATEVER she gets should be received as something that she is not owed...something for which she should just shut up and be grateful.

I almost hope that she gets nothing and has to do her own shopping for her OWN baby.

The Robeez shoes for sure, the really good and thick burp rags, a nice soft blanket, a couple cute books, lots of cute socks (that stay on lil' feet), maybe one of those pre-made 'burrito' wraps...that velcro together so you can swaddle the baby easily, if they are bottle feeding some cute good bottles, a couple different kinds of binkys, and the good smelling lotion!

How about a gift card to Babies R Us? My favorite thing when the kids were little was a sling to carry the kids in, so you could add one of those (although there are many different types and different people prefer different ones. I did not like the baby bjorn but loved my sling. Perhaps some fun things for MOM since all the focus is usually on baby stuff. How about some very nice hand cream, or a gift certificate for a manicure?

for baby gifts I like to receive things that I love & are cute but I wouldnt necessarily spend the money on myself...such as lovey blankets, they are cute but can be pricey (you know the small ones that have tags & such on them), cute toys (also small but can be pricey), toys that go on the car seat, there are these things at target its a button that vibrates you can put it into the carseat to make it vibrate...

Is she going to nurse? Breast pads, lanolin cream for her nipples. At least 5 different types of pacifiers (some babies are picky) so that they don't use her nipples as pacifiers and so that the baby doesn't suck its thumbs. A clip for the baby's clothes to attach the pacifier to so that it doesn't fall in the floor. If she will be bottle-feeding at all, different nipples so she has a choice as to which to use. See if you can get samples of different formulas too.

I forgot what the stuff is called that you use to treat stains like poop, pee and spit up. It was wonderful stuff - I remember that! (And no, it can't be found at the grocery store.)

I'd go to Babies R Us and look around. Don't go wild though - you can spend a fortune filling a diaper bag!

Onesies and outfits. You know baby will go through 10 outfits in one day and then outgrow them in no time. Take them off the hangers and roll them up into little tubes so more fits.

Someone who is specific about not wanting small things, might be picky about the diaper bag (I just had a baby). You didn't say if the bag was from her registry or if you bought it already. Petunia Pickle Bottom bags are awesome and $180. All the other good diaper bags I found were at least $100 (JJ Cole etc.) for a useful size. Not sure what your (or her) price range is, but instead of all the little stuff (that I wasn't that into either, I'd want an awesomely useful bag.
If you want to buy more, swaddling blankets are great (the gauze ones that are at least 44 X 44), nursing tops from www.majamas.com, designer burp cloths,or a copy of the schedule set-up by you of people who are bringing her dinner for the first 2 weeks postpartum . But I do second the mom that recommended various pacifiers, it took us 5 brands to get one he loved.

How about a special "going home" outfit for the little one? Include everything from the skin out (onesie, tights, socks, booties, clothes, blanket, bonnet) all washed & ready to go.
