Stroller for Older Child
Hi everyone,
Does anyone have any suggestions for a good stroller for an older child (6-7 yrs old)? I travel often with my son and found that using a stroller helps us both- especially in the airports and at theme parks. However, I have been using an umbrella stroller and he has definitely become too tall and heavy for it! I have searched a lot, but have not found any stoller which accomodates this age/size...If anyone has found one, pleeeease let me know!! thanks and have a great day!:)

I'm jealous! My girls refused to go in a stroller ever since they started walking at 10 months. It definitely makes things easier when they will just sit and be pushed. I had the same thoughts as others - maybe look into more wheelchair/disabled options which will certainly be made for kids in that age range. Commercially there probably aren't going to be many options for kids older than 3/4 years.

I'm sorry but I agree with some of the other posts. He's too big to still be pushed around in a stroller. He will never learn how to walk through those places if you continue to push him instead. I have a 6 year-old and he's been out of a stroller since 3-4 years old. When he was 4 I used a wagon around town, to walk to the park, etc. But at 5 there was no more wagon or stroller rides. I think once they know they have to walk it, they will learn how to be more cooperative. I also think that walking/excercise is a healthy thing for a 6/7 year old to be doing.
The only exception I do make is on the rare occassions that I take him shopping with me, I put him in the larger part of the shopping cart, since he can still fit there.
If walking is just not working, try having him take a scooter along, but then you'll need to catch up to him!
Good luck to you and re-try walking with him, just give yourself extra time, so he won't hold you up and make you late.

Hi, you could look into a BOB stroller. They are very sturdy, handle really well, and accommodate a child up to 70 lbs. It's not cheap but it's great quality. The only problem is his head will be way above the canopy but if you keep the canopy up, then it should be ok. As with all strollers, it might be a good idea to find a dealer near you and try it out before you buy. Also try posting it on the CityMommy Central Jersey message board to see if you get any other answers.

Im sure this doesn't help you....but theirs a reason why they don't make strollers for 7 year olds. It is a help Im sure, but its time he needs to get some stamina and walk. It doesn't make any sense at this age for you to still be pushing him, even if it quiets the whining and helps him out. He is plenty old enough to behave his age.

Most theme parks have strollers that you can rent if you really need to use one. As someone else mentioned, at age 7 your child should be able to fully participate in your activities. If he can't then maybe it isn't an appropriate thing to be doing with him at this point or you should consider restructuring the activity. At a theme park, break the day up a little. Go early in the morning, take a break in the middle of the day at the hotel and then go back in the late afternoon.
My parents traveled with us frequently at this age and younger- strollers were "out" by age 4 (ish). We each had a bag packed with things to entertain and feed us in-flight and in the airport. As a school-aged child, your son can use a backpack and can carry some of his own things in the airport. If you need to get b/w terminals quickly, ask for help when you check-in. They may be able to provide you one of the carts that they use for that purpose.
A friend of mine and I were talking yesterday about how once you carry a diaper bag, you feel like you can never go back to a regular bag again! If you are finding yourself carrying 100 "just in case" items, try editing and downsizing. Have him be in charge of some of his things and remember that in most cases, you can buy it at the park/airport/hotel. More costly, but do you need to pack 6 bottles of water?
not sure if they will help, but i like these products
www.onestepahead.com They have a lot of hard-to-find items.

I don't know where to get them but I know there are sturdy strollers made for the disabled. However, they are probably costly and you may not want to make much of an investment, I suspect your son is not far from being mortified at the thought of being seen in a stroller.
