What is recommended to help keep stretch marks to a minimum and not severe if possible? I just completed my 1st trimester and would like to be proactive now if it helps. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I had started using some Shea Butter I already had but was not thinking about rear, lower back and thighs. I'm going to lather it all over! Can't hurt & definitely worth a try. I haven't heard of Bio Oil so that was really helpful. I'm only 5' 1" and 110lbs so we'll see! I'm 13 weeks w/my 1st baby. At least I'll be soft!

Whatever you decide to use, do it everyday faithfully! Everyday! It does make a BIG difference. Then you can use the Palmer's Tightning Butter after you give birth and start to move around.

I used MotherLove Belly oil all over and I didn't get a single mark from pregnancy. And, no, I'm not one of those lucky women who just never gets stretch marks. I already have a bunch on my hips and thighs and boobs from puberty. My mom and both grandma's are also covered in them, so stretchmarks are in my genes. I was shocked at how well this stuff worked. Not a single mark on my belly, or any new marks anywhere else. I bought mine online at www.motherlove.com

I used 100% Shea Butter from Bath and Body Works with my first two pregnancies and never got any stretch marks. I'm pregnant with my third and am using it again. A friend told me about it several years ago. She had twins...and no stretch marks. Right now they're having a sale - buy 2 get 2 free. It comes in a tub and is $17.50. Hope this helps!

I don't believe that it is hereditary. My mother and older sister have horrible stretch marks and I don't have any. I had two preganancies, one at the age of 37 and not one stretch mark. I didn't rub any oils or creams on my stomach and honestly, after a shower I would only lotion the areas of my body that would show, like my arms and legs, never my belly. So, I really think it has to do with the elasticity in your skin and maybe if you gain too much weight too quickly.

I am not one of those folks blessed to be stretch mark free- have them on back due to growth spurt as teen!(I do believe part of it is genetic). BUT, I can tell you, my first pregnancy I did get minimal on my stomach. I used Palmer's Cocoa Butter- but not daily.
I am now 34 weeks pregnant with twins & have been using the Palmer's Cocoa Butter Daily- sometimes twice a day- and no additional stretch marks, and existing have stayed put!

Yes, Mustella Stretch Mark cream is awesome... I then topped that off with the Body Shop Cocoa Butter cream that comes in the round can. I rubbed both of these on my tummy, boobs, butt... all that stuff 2 times a day with my first and I didn't get one stretch mark. I am only 9 weeks now with my second but I am doing this again with #2 for sure. This has worked for many of my friends too. Good Luck!

Hi J.,

I am 21 weeks pregnant with my first child. I used cocoa/shea butter at first but I found it soaked in too quickly and I still felt dry and itchy. So I switched to Burts Bees Mama Bee Belly Butter. I know that's a mouthful, but this stuff is AWESOME! I lather up after my morning shower and cover my belly, breasts, hips, lower back and bum. The best part is your skin stays moisturized all day. Even when I go to bed it is still there keeping me moisturized and my belly is no longer itchy. I haven't seen a single stretch mark! I bought a jar for my coworker who is 23 weeks pregnant and she swears by this stuff too.
Here is a link where they sell it cheaper than Burt's Bees:

I heard on Mamasource that Vitamin E oil is the best. Of course, I read this after I gave birth. I thought I was so lucky throughout my pregnancy--I didn't think I had any. HOWEVER, upon deflation of the belly, I discovered they were on the underside of that big beach ball. UGH!! Luckily, they have faded very nicely. Good luck to you!!

Bio Oil- absolutely! I've been using it since my 1st trimester, and I'm now 38 wks, measuring at exactly my week at each appt, and I don't have ONE new stretchmark! I saw "new" because I got some from puberty, so I know I am prone to them. But with using Bio Oil in the morning and before bed, I look beautiful!! You can get a bottle that will last a month at Walgreens for about $20.

I lathered myself in Cocoa butter and Vitamin E oil.

I have no stretch marks.

As someone else said...don't gain weight too fast and don't gain too much. I was about 105# when preggers and never went over 135#.

Well, I gained over 80lb with my son and applied cocoa butter stick from The Body Shop during 2nd and 3rd trimesters. I have stretch marks on my belly and my thighs but they've faded out 2 & 1/2 years later. Of course, the belly itching was my main motivation in applying anything!

Palmer's Cocoa Butter lotion and Vitamin E oil both worked great for me during my pregnancies, I virtually have no stretch marks on my stomach/abdomen. Unfortunately I DO have more on my hips and upper thighs because I didn't think to pay much attention to those during pregnancy and with my first son I had pre-eclampsia and swelled alot very quickly leaving me with more stretch marks in those places. However Mederma helped fade those rather quickly so they are hardly noticeable.

I used Vitamin E Oil (target sells it for about $3 in the bottle) mostly with my first pregnancy. I didn't get any until 34 weeks when he dropped lower, but there are just a few below my belly button. With my 2nd pregnancy, I mostly used Burt's Bees Mama Butter with cocoa butter, vit e, etc. It works pretty well too. I wasn't as dilligent at using it with the 2nd pregnancy, so I have a few more. I would recommend using something at least twice a day. As others recommended, be sure you use it on your sides, hips, thighs, rear, belly & breasts. Pretty much anywhere you are going to gain weight or swell(some people even get them on their arms)

I don't think any lotion or cream will prevent stretch marks. You either get them or you don't. Gaining a lot of weight in a short time will increase your odds of getting them though.

Cocobutter is supposed to help some. But you have to check the ingredients. Just because the name of the item says cocobutter doesnt mean that it will have it as a key ingredient. And I hate to dissapoint you but I put stuff on my belly all through my pregnancy. I was anal about it and i still got bad stretch marks. I dont want to discourage you but prepare you for it just in case. It all depends on the elasticity in your skin. Mine couldnt handle stretching anymore and it just went. But dont give up trying on the cocobutter. It might work for you. Good luck. I hope you enjoy your pregnancy as much as I did.

I used Palmer's Cocoa Butter Lotion the last two trimesters of my pregnancy EVERY morning and don't have a single stretch mark. They also say that staying well hydrated helps with the elasticity of your skin, also helping to deter stretch marks.

I used baby oil like crazy. I even poured it into my bath water so that way I was soaking in it everyday. I do not have a stretch mark. I also think not gaining too much weight at one time is a huge factor. Walk, walk, walk! Someone mentioned stretch marks are hereditary. That may be but my mom is covered in them and I'm not. On the other hand, she gained 50- 60lbs w/ each pregnancy and I gained 35lbs.

I have stretch marks on my bum from high school days and ???maybe growing to fast? I don't know. I was never fat! But, anyway, I guess that I was prone to stretch marks. But I put cocoa butter (Palmers) on my belly during my 3 pregnancies and never got any pregnancy stretch marks! My mother in law had recommended it b/c she had used it and never gotten any. I wish that I had used it in high school! Good luck! But if you DO get them....it is still worth it ! :)

Keep your skin moisturized. This keeps your skin supple and elastic so it can stretch. Imagine a desert and how the ground gets cracked when it tries to stretch with no moisture. Everytime your belly or any area that is bigger than before itches moisturize it. Scratching makes stretch marks appear faster. I used body moisturizing creams and belly lotions with vitamin E and elastin, mostly that palmer's brand. Some people don't like the smell but there are plenty of brand out there now a days. Genetics plays a role but you can do your part to minimize the effects. The other moms' are right, don't gain weight too fast and moisturize every day, after every shower/bath, and whenever you itch. Oh, and remember to lotion your lower back too. I forgot that one area and got stretch marks. Good Luck.
