Strep Throat After Ear Tubes and Having Adenoids Removed

After numerous ear infections, my then 6 year old daughter, Marti, had tubes put in in June of '08. Those tubes were replaced, in March of '09 (because they were clogged and she was suffering again from persistant fluid in her ear and hearing loss), and her adenoids were removed at the same time. The doctor said her adenoids were huge. In April, Marti had her first ever case of strep throat, which seemed to last until June, after being on antibiotics for almost that whole time.. In August she was positive for strep again, and was treated with another round of antibiotics. Now exactly four weeks after the August positive strep test, I'm afraid she has strep again!!! I'm so overwhelmed by this. My daughter has suffered so much. I thought the two surgeries would have helped her health improve and now we just seemed to have traded one problem for another. Marti's recovery from the adenoidectomy was horrible, mainly because her doctor gave us no after sugery care plan - I'm also looking for a new ENT. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a connection between these illnesses? .Any suggestions for how to relieve her pain and suffering? I'd appreciate any, and all ideas, suggestions or comments. I feel so alone with this.

Dear T.,

My son had constant ear infections almost from birth. He had tubes and adnoids removed at 20 months. When he entered pre-school he had strepp and gets it twice a year. When he had constant ear infections he was always on antibiotics and I felt he was becoming immune to them. He is never in any pain when he gets strepp just goes on a specific antibiotic that works in 4 days and it's done. I don't think you traded one problem for another it's just that when kids are school age they get sick a lot. That is mainly because parents send their kids to school sick. Definitly get a new doc who is more proactive and definitly do the 10 day after strepp check. Unchecked after antibiotics are complete can lead to many things even heart issues. Good luck- A. B.

Hi T.- sorry to hear you are going through this. I feel your pain! My now 5 year old son had his adenoids out and ear tubes in over a year ago because of recurring sinus infections, and since then, it does not seem like he has gotten sick any less often. He too now gets strep instead! To be honest, I regret putting him through that surgery. Anyway, we have heard that taking gluten out of his diet can keep his immune system stronger, and so far, it seems to be helping a bit. There are many brands of gluten free bread and pasta products out there now. Good luck and keep in touch so we can see if it works.

I know exactly how you feel my daughter who is now 20 years old went though something similar but she was younger. At one she had tubes and that seemed to work. She then would have strep throat constantly. She had it 4 times in fourth grade and the doc was ready to remove her tonsils at that point and then it just went away and she never had it again. I am not sure why it went away but she never got it again. My fear was that her body would build an immunity to all of the antibiotics she was on for so many year. In high school during cheering practice she didn't feel well, dizzy, and was always getting horrible black and blues. I immediately took her to the doctor and she was diagnosed with something called ITP. I can't even spell the real name or say it. It is a blood platelet disorder where the blood does not clot properly. I was told it usually comes from a virus and in some cases goes away and in other cases it can stay with you. Fortunately it is not life threatening, however she has to have her blood monitored frequently and continues to get black and blues very easily. If you have ITP longer then 6 months it will usually stay with you which in my daughters case it did. I am not sure how long she has even had it and if it laid dormant or what the case is. Like I said it is not life threatening but it is a concern. The doctor said if she were a boy she would not have been allowed to play any contact sports like football because of the clotting factor. I do not know if this is a result of constant strep throat, and I don't even think the doctors know. But strep throat can play havoc on your body and is serious. Go to a different doc and maybe she needs a stronger and longer course of medication to get the strep completely out of her system. If you have to remove her tonsils then I would do it that may be the only way to get rid of the strep. Good luck and please keep us posted. I know how hard it is to see our children sick all of the time.
