Hi Ladies! You have always been helpful in the past, so thank you up front for your help again. My son is 11 months old and has developed this strange rash on his torso and back. It is little red bumps (can be seen and felt). Some of the bumps are bigger than others, but they are all over his torso, front and back. Nothing in his diet has changed. He has been eating the same foods for a while now so I dont think that can be it. I did notice I accidentally bought regular laundry soap rather then the dye and perfume free kind. Can that really make that big of a difference? Could it be the laundry soap? I'm going out tomorrow to get new soap and rewash all his clothes. Also, we just recently moved to a new city. There are many different trees here that werent where we used to live, so could this be allergy related? I know I should just take him to the doctor, but we dont have insurance right now so I'm trying to clear it up on my own. Any help and advice is appreciated...oh also, he does not have a fever, and everything else seems to be healthy and normal. Also it does not seem to bother him at all. Thank you in advance for your help!!

So What Happened?

Wow! Not even 24 hrs and you ladies totally helped me! You all are awesome! I'm rewashing all his clothes just in case. I'm pretty sure its either a heat rash or like a lot of you mentioned, a rash from a virus working through his body. He is just now getting over a little cold, so that could easily be it. Also, I have applied for medi-cal for the family. So hopefully we will be able to get that sometime soon. Never needed the states help before...a little humbling. Thank you everyone for taking the time to answer my question.

If it sticks around even after rewashing his clothes, it may be mild excsema. My daughter has a mild case, and it looks just like you described, over her back and torso. It feels kind-of rough. Anyway, Aquaphor ointment clears it right up for her. When it was bad I used it after every bath; it's under control now so apply it on those areas once every few days, or if it seems to be coming back, just to keep it at bay. Good luck!

My son and daughter just got Scarlet Fever, it was going around. It starts with very mild cold symptoms, Just a sniffle or two, and then a sore throat. (It is caused by strep throat.)In a young child you might not notice this.(I didn't think it was anything serious because he didnt complain!) Then a rash will emerge, usually around the neck or chest area, sometimes moving up to one of the cheeks, behind ears, or to the back, sometimes (classic) in the underarm area. In will be bright red. Different sized hive looking dots. Maybe not so itchy at first but getting more itchy as it progresses. It will start to fade after a week and then the rash re-emerges.

Look up Scarlet fever symptoms and rash online (click images.)

I was too late to get it with antibiotics. by the time doc saw him it was 3 weeks old.His throat swab by that time was negative. We did about 3 days of a 10 day antibx trial and then I stopped them because my younger daughter had a reaction to the Meds. I was also treating with a homeopathic antibiotic called Samento that I got online and also fulvic acid.

Hmmm...sounds a bit like chicken pox! Maybe you can look online to see what chicken pox bumps look like and see if that's what your son has.

My son would get a rash from laundry soap and some fabric softeners. I'd try switching back to the perfume and dye free and wash things without fabric softener - simply touching my sheets or clothing would set my son off at times. I'd also try using a super lubricating lotion for him after baths. We used Eucerin or Cetaphil (sp?). We were told he had eczema and still has dry skin patches crop up now, 14 years later.

My son had an episode like that before. We were visiting family in HK and we couldn't figure out what he was allergic to. We figured it was laundry detergent since he had the same rash all over his body except where it was covered by diaper. Change your detergent and you can at least isolate it and see if it is true.

Hi M.,
My daughter had this about that same age. The Dr. said it was a viral rash. Some babies only get a rash and no other symptoms. He said he often calls it mystery rash. :o) It went away in a few days.

I don't have any advice to give for the rash but as far as being uninsured, you should look into Medicaid or State Childrens Health Insurance Program for your baby boy. Even if his rash clears up, he still needs his well baby check ups. If you live in California, you can get help applying for both Medi-Cal and Healthy Families. Check for information on finding a certified application assistant in your area on the Healthy Families website at www.healthyfamilies.ca.gov. This help is offered at no cost to you. If you don't live in California, check with your county office of social services.

Good luck!

Hi M., Your son's rash could be laundry soap related, or since you have moved, are you near any Sycamore trees? My hubby used to work as a tree trimmer/topper, and often had irritated skin, and sometimes our children got the rashes also. He said that Sycamore trees are very bad for allergy proned people. Hope this gives you another avenue to explore. Sincerely, CJ

My son is 10 months old. He has a bit of a cold and on Wednesday I discovered a rash on his body. At first I thought it was a heat rash. It was on his back stomach, neck and some of his face. I spoke to the dr. since he was not eating well and she told me that he has a viral rash. I am not sure if your son is/was sick. Try looking it up and comparing. Hope that bit of info helps.

Hi M.,
Ask you doctor about erythema multiform. My daughter also had a strange rash on her torso when she was about 10 months old.
We had just taken her to a picnic so I was sure it was the grass, or the single grape we gave her! The first doc said she was fine, not to worry but of course we did. (She felt fine)
So we asked another doc in the practice and he took one look and said "Oh, my daughter had that!" He said it like when a cold is done, when the body is trying to get all the virus's out, it is kind of what is left over. And he said it was harmless even though it looks bad. I am sorry I am not as eloquent at explaining it. But check with your ped and see what he says. I used all baby soap for baby number one. I never did for 3 and 4!
One more thing, if you just moved he could be sensitive to the new water or even the dairy. If he is nursing or starting dairy, the change from one area to the next could cause a reaction. My 3rd daughter had a reaction when we were vacationing in AZ, because of the milk I was drinking. I just stopped drinking the milk in AZ until we went home. Ask your doc and best of luck.
Enjoy your time with baby and together. We have had layoffs in our family as well. Bets of luck to you and your family.
From C., mom of 4 beautiful girls, ages 6 to 13.

Good morning M.

A couple of things come to mind, one of which is HIVES..
Having had them myself, you can get them on the warmer areas of your body such as your torso and back. The hives like the warmth, so when you lie down at night under the covers, your body tends to heat up a bit so that's when they can strike. Also from all that I have read, hives seem to run in a cycle meaning they can last from a month to several. The other thing that comes to mind is asthma, my son has asthma (mild , you'd never know he had it at times) but you can get what are known as asthma bumps on the skin that are white and can be reddish... I had no idea about this until the doctor explained it to us. Part of the reason I never would have dreamt it was asthma is because at the time, my son wasn't having "traditional" symptoms such as wheezing and wasn't out of breath, however he did have these bumps..

Could it be exczema? Our daughter has it until she was about 2.5. The rashes were made better by moisturizer and time. We did find out along the way that DD has severe dog allergies, and is also allergic to grass and feathers to a lessor extent. Exczema looks different when on different parts of the body at different times, but most kids grow out of it.

I'm so sorry to hear about your lay offs, I will be laid off in July! Best of luck to you.
What I would do is go to webmd and search for rashes on kids. Just a warning, they are BAD rashes, the worst. However, it should give you an idea of what you're looking at. My daughter had a rash (not bumpy and you couldn't feel it) that went around her hair line and over her torso and back, didn't go below the groin area and it turned out to be strep g.
Best of luck!

Sometimes a rash can be due to a virus...my daughter seems to get them all! Has he had a fever in the last week? The ones she has had have been non-contagious (the rash itself anyway) and don't bother her. They're just the final stage in the virus. You should probably check in with your pediatrician just to be on the safe side.

Definitely the laundry soap can do that! Go back to your old stuff or try Charlie's Soap http://www.charliessoap.com No scents, dyes, or other bad stuff, & you only use a tablespoon per load--and it's still reasonably priced. I started using it on cloth diapers & have since switched to it for all our wash.

Hey M.,

I just went through this crazy rash with my daughter and it was the laundry soap. My husband had bought Tide with Febreeze. When I started telling people at work what was going on, I was very surprised to find that many children and adults are allergic to Tide. My mom told me that with my sister, who is now 40, she couldn't use Tide either. When we took her to the daughter he just gave her a benadryl type medication.
About not having health insurance, check with your local health department about being signed up for CHDP (Child Health and Disability Prevention). There may be other providers in the area who also sign children up. You would have to be income eligible, it's based on family size and monthly income. It's a gateway to Medi-Cal. Your child would have full-scope Medi-Cal for about 2 months, which allows you to complete all the paperwork. You don't have to provide proof of income, bank statements or anything like that. Just complete a few forms and it will cover an well baby exam and any immunizations he might be due for. I can provide you with further information if you'd like about CHDP, including the income guidelines, just email me. =o).

If he is acting normally, it might simply be a heat rash. My daughter tends to get them too, since her skin is very dry. I would try to dress him lighter, in cotton clothes that breathe better and moisturize heavily in the morning and in the evening.

My daughter also had little red bumps on the torso that started in her armpit then spread across her chest. It looked to me like a mild poison oak rash if that gives you an idea. She had no fever or any other sign of illness but I took her in. Like a few other moms mentioned, docter said it was a rash caused by a virus and that it just had to run its course, 2-4 weeks, and don't worry as long as baby is happy, acting normal, and no fever. There is no medicine to use, just keep skin moisturized if it looks dry. The bumbs got a little worse after the first week then slowly faded, taking about 4 weeks to disappear. So that is one possibility.

Hi,M.. My 2 yr. old daughter had some bumps on her legs, buttocks, face and arms for the longest time (almost six months) and her pediatrician couldn't figure it out. We have been prescribed different medicated lotions and ointments (some with steroid), but to no avail. We finally went to a dermatologist and she figured it out right away, it's molluscum something (another name -- warts). The doctor said that because she's so young, her body is not recognizing it so her immune system is not fighting it. Anyway, it's gone now, so I think you may have to really have it check. Maybe it's just allergies. I'm sorry to hear about you and your husband being laid off, but I did a little research because I know children are covered when it comes to their health or maybe there's a very minimal amount to pay $9-$12. Please check this www.healthyfamilies.ca.gov or call 1-800-880-5305. Good luck and hope that rash and bumps will go away on their own.
