Strange Rash - North Royalton,OH

So my son gets up from a nap yesterday with this rash thing all over his face. It is no where else on his body. It goes from ear to ear, all over his cheeks and even across his noise. I call it a "rash thing" because it really looks like broken blood vessels. It's not bumpy or itchy, and he has no other symptoms; no fever, no loss of appetite, no change in behavior. Now, I took a nap yesterday afternoon, and he was very upset about it. My boyfriend (his father) said he threw quite a crying/screaming fit. Could he have broken blood vessels in face from screaming? If not, from what else could it be?

Also (unrelated to his "rash"), he has been urinating much more frequently. We have not increased his liquids, and he does not drink more than he usually does. It's gotten to the point where we have to change his diaper every 1.5-2 hours because it's about to explode. He also wets through his extra absorbent night time diaper regularly, and we don't let him drink after 7:30 (he goes to bed at 9). What could be causing this? Should I be concerned?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your responses! I did end up looking up Fifth Disease on WebMD. The description did sound like my son's "rash". However, because it is a virus, I did not call my doctor. My son had been sick for over 4 weeks (the entire month of October!), and I went back and forth for seveal days. I am just sick of hearing "It's a virus. Just let it run its course." Thus, I did what the treatment for Fifth Disease is: liquids and rest.

The rahs has definitely started going away. His cheeks are still a little red, but not nearly as much as it was 4 days ago. If other syptoms arise or it comes back, then I will call the doctor. Thanks again! It's so comforting to hear from moms!

I would call the pediatrician's office and speak to a nurse. Some kids get a rash with strep throat. They will have you come in if they think he needs a strep test. His crankiness during your nap may have been because he didn't feel well. My son is usually cranky for a day before he shows any recognizeable symptoms of illness. If it is something like strep he will need an antibiotic.

My son had something similar when he was little. I took him to the doctor and they said it was called the fifth disease or slapped face. There was nothing they could do about it becasue it is just a virus. It could be something like that. Or if he was outside maybe it could be wind burn. I would just take him to the doctor and get it checked out. While you're there you should tell them about the frequent urination. He could have a bladder infection. I hope this helps.

I would call your son's pediatrician and give him/her all of the information you just gave us - add information about his emotional state, temperature changes, sleeping or eating changes and anything else you can think of that would be needed to make a determination about his health.

Goodl luck.

T.,
On the website WebMD there is a section that shows you the different types of childhood rashes. That may help you narrow it down a bit. If you can't find the pictures, let me know and I will help. My email is ____@____.com luck!

You might want to consider this rash thing being a food allergy. My son was allergic to strawberries and had a similiar rash all around the mouth area. Sorry this is all the help I have, good luck!

It doesn't sound like slap cheek virus. My daughter had this last year and her cheeks were bright red and hot to the touch. I would call his doctor and ask them.
