Stopped pumping/Still No Period

I have stopped pumping about 2-3 months ago and I still have not had a period and my son is now 5 months old. I am still leaking, but just a tiny bit now...hardly any...basically, I'm about dried up. I am not on any hormonal birth control and I don't want to take any hormonal BC. My husband and I have been taking precautions and use condoms. He is going to get a vesectomy this month and we are happy with just 2 children.

Anyways, I'm getting nervous. I called my doctor but the nurse was busy so I have to wait for a phone call and I'm just on pins and needles. Any ideas? Is there someone that has gone through this?

What can I do next?

If you are also not feeling so good...depressed, tired, dull, then you might want to have a family Dr examine your thyroid.

It was 6 months after I quit breast feeding before I got my first period...and the first three were all over the map, as far as timing.

I had the same problem. I finally got my period after almost 3 months. I read in one of my books that you can go almost a year without a period as it has to do with your estrogen levels. One of my friends from college went almost 6 months before hers started again. I would just check in with your doctor at your regualarly scheduled yearly exam.

It can take a while for cycles to resume - I was one of the unlucky ones who got my cycle back 6 weeks after delivery with all 3 of mine, despite exclusive breastfeeding. I also "leaked" for over 1 year after I stopped nursing before my milk finally totally "dried up" - I had my prolactin levels checked - but the ob/gyn told me it was normal even that far out esp. b/c I had been nursing my daughter for 2 years.

It can take quite some time for your hormones to get back to normal so your periods will be regular again. BUT, as you noted, you can still get pregnant because you can ovulate before you get your periods back. Also, since you did not gradually wean, it likely is taking longer - with the milk production being a sign that you still have elevated prolactin, which can suppress your periods.

Mine came back with both my sons when they were 18 months old (and still nursing a few times a day). Apparently, it's the nite time nursing that most impacts when your periods return. Also, it's different for everyone.

Why don't you just go buy a pregnancy test if that's what you're worried about?
