Stop Smoking - Castle Rock,CO

My sister has been smoking since she was a teenager and has tried many times to stop smoking with out success. She has tried the "patch" and said that did nothing for her. She does not want to take medications as they have serious side effects. Is there something out there that she could do that really works? Any advice would be great as she and I both know that this is a hard habit to kick and I am glad that she is taking this serious now.

What can I do next?

A friend of mine also was perscribed Chantix by her doctor, and it completely helped her to quit. It works on the nicotine receptors in the brain. And nicotine is more addictive than heroine, so no easy task. Chantix is like $90 but worth it!

My son, age 37, has tried everything to quit, too, but to no avail. So, I'm wanting to read suggestions also.

There's a book called "End Your Addiction Now" by Charles Gant, MD, PhD. It's got information about smoking (and other addictions) and how they affect your brain chemistry. And how your brain chemistry led you to those addictions in the first place. It recommends vitamin supplements that help sort out your chemistry so you don't *need* to smoke anymore.

I had started this program but hadn't quite gotten around to the quitting part. Then I found out I was pregnant, so I did actually quit. And the great part was that because I'd been taking the vitamins for a little while, I had no physical cravings AT ALL. No shakes, headache, grumpiness...okay, I did still have one cigarette a day for a couple of weeks but then I was done. And it's been more than 5 years now.

Dr. Gant now sells supplement packs on www.powerrecoveryprogram.com. I don't know how the price compares to buying them separately at a vitamin shop but it might be worth checking out.

Best of luck to your sis. She can do this!

For many people its the emotional habit more than the physical. Yes, the body depends on the nicotine, but the physical act of putting the cigarette to the lips and the breathing in and out can become more addicting! She needs to find something else to do when she feels like smoking. The patch works well, it takes the cravings away but the oral part needs replacing, my husband used toothpicks or coffee stirers in his mouth to help with that, gum, sunflower seeds or little sugar free candies are good too. Stay away from spicy foods, chocolate and coffee because those items can make you crave a cigarette too.

She needs to replace the bad habit for a good one. My cousin used Cinnamon sticks in his mouth to replace the cigarette.
Another thing she can do is cut down 3 cigs a week for 4 weeks, and then 2 more for 3 weeks. Gradually, the body doesn't crave as much. Its easier to give up 3 or 4 cigs a day than 20 all at once.

The best thing for me was signing up on one of many various websites that help you quit. There are a bunch of time wasters and stuff but also just tracking the progress in days, hours, minutes, time saved, money saved helped a lot! Also (I saw that someone suggested this below) cinnamon sticks. For me the cinnamon sticks didn't work that well but they had green tea sticks that I really enjoyed. For me one of the biggest problems was the oral fixation. I also took an empty box of cigarettes (this is kind of silly but it worked) I would cut straws to the size of cigarettes and put them in there and somehow it always made me feel better when I went through the full motion of opening up a pack pulling a straw out and sucking on it. Good luck to your sister, it is one of the hardest things I've ever done!

Help her to understand the powerful addiction. A nicotine craving comes once every 17 seconds. Trying to just go it alone, or "get over it" with sheer will power is like attacking Sherman's army with cardboard sword.

Even up the odds. Help her choose a program with support, a buddy and definitely as much help as she can get. It will be quite some time before she gets the current nicotine out of her system, not to mention getting over the craving cycle. The best defense is a powerful offense!

My grandfather smoked for more than 50 years. He told me that he tried everything. Then one day he met a woman who said she quit by cutting out the first cigarette of the day. I guess it was one right after getting up or around breakfast. When she it became a habit not to have that cigarette, then she cut out the next one. Slow and gradual. Grandpa tried this method out and it worked for him, too. May be an option.

I know you said she doesn't want to take medications but my husband quit smoking over 3 months ago on a medication called chantix. He loved it. You smoke on it for a couple of weeks and then cigarettes just stop tasting good. If you want a cigarette you can have one, but when you smoke it you realize you don't want one. My husband was on it for about a month and then he stopped the medication as well.

I know it sounds funny, but when I quit, every time I thought about a cigarette I'd think "why do I want a cigarette? I don't smoke!". It got me through the craving.

Hi there! I'm glad your sister is finally quitting smoking. The benefits are outstanding. Anyway, a sure way is hypnosis. My husband is a hypnotherapist and he has been very successful in helping people quit smoking and it's kind of his specialty. His name is James ###-###-####. His website is askyourhypnotist.com There you will find additional information about it!

Tell her to give him a try and good luck.

I had smoked since I was eleven. Now in my thirties. I had tried the patch, cold turkey and various others. I went to Hypnotherapy and BAM, no smoking and didn't even want too! Good for her for making the decision no matter how she does it.

Has she considered hypnotherapy? I just read an article online about the success rates of hypnotherapy in conjunction with the patch and compared to the patch alone it was phenominal. I used hypnobirthing when having my kids and it is a great way to relax and help mold your mindset. I'm not sure how well it works on it's own, but it's worth a try. Also, she should look into her health insurance to see what kind of smoking cessation programs are offered through them and through the local hospitals. There are tons of resources out there. Good luck to her on kicking this habit!

Hi CM,

I can help her... I am a Psych-K facilitator. Psych-K (Psychology-Kiniseology) is a technique that reprograms the subconscious mind (which is running 95-99% of the show). When we make a decision on a conscious level, things don't fall into allignment unless the subconscious is on the same page. It's a simple technique that can remove all kinds of limiting beliefs and patterns. The first sesion would be 90 minutes (that very well be all she will need) and it's $105. You can reach me @ ###-###-#### or ____@____.com this helps,

A
