Does anyone know what I can do for my daughter, she has poop...just trouble pooping. It's hard, she strains and grunts and cries. She will not drink any kind of juice. I've given her grapes and plenty of water. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

What can I do next?

I give another vote to Miralax. My son is incredibly picky about his juice and doesn't notice it at all. He has had terrible problems with constipation. Since we started giving him half a capful every day and setting him on the potty every night, it has gotten much better. Some things the doctor told us that helped were not to keep him on the potty longer than 10 minutes...even if you know it's there. This can cause hemmoroids (sp?) and make the problem a whole lot worse. So, if you know it's there, put her on, let her sit. If nothing, let her run, jump, play, then try again about 30 minutes later. Doc said NO enemas, and we had been relying on these. This doesn't allow their bodies to learn to work out the kinks from the top down (or something like that.) Let me know if you have more questions. Good luck! I know it's frustrating!!

For the long term you could try giving her a probiotic once daily. It will make her regular naturaly. You can get them at Walmart or any vitamin store.

My daughter had HORRIBLE constipation and nothing worked - juice, prunes, etc. Not even glycerine suppositories at first. We ended up having to give her an enema to get the hard stuff out, then liquid glycerine suppositories (pedilax brand). We now give her Miralax daily - truly the miracle laxative. You can mix it in water or milk (my 11mo daughter drinks it in her formula). Its been a God send!!!

What is your pediatrician saying?

When my son was two he had the same problem. After mixing prune and apple juice (half and half) didn't work, the doctor had me go to the pharmacy to pick up glycerin suppositories. She had me cut them in half long ways and insert it. It worked. Before we did that, when my son could poop, it was so hard that he would have blood in his stool and the doctor have me save it for examination, but there was no major internal problem. Get the glycerin suppositories. It's over the counter but you'll probly have to ask the pharmacist to show you where they are. It's for all ages.

We loaned some of our Juice Plus gummies to a friend for her 2-yr old just for nutrition, and she says they work great for pooping. This is not a medicine, it's basically condensed food, so may be a better solution. Contact ____@____.com://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/t040500.asp

Try feeding her oranges with sugar. It has the same effect as glycerin suppositories. Or try giving her bottled water with brown sugar. Try rubbing her belly with crisco/baking powder mixture. Just the lower belly. Mix tbsp crisco shortening and tbsp baking powder in your hand and rub in a circular motion her lower belly around the belly button. Cover it with a cotton cloth. Put her clothes back on and give her some chamomile tea. It works. I've tried all this on my babies. I didn't much like taking them to the dr. for everything unless I really had to. Good luck!

Try PediaSure. I also give my son a natural laxative for kids that I found at Wal-Mart.

We've used Miralax with both our kids with no side effects at all. We mixed it in their apple juice and it worked like a charm. When my daughter was really stopped up, we'd do the Miralax twice a day, then after she went we'd give her like 1/2 a dose once a day to make sure everything was moving along. My son is a poop machine, usually 4 dirty diapers a day (20 months old) if he ever skips a day he gets a 1/2 dose of Miralax the next morning so he doesn't get stopped up.

One thing that we do when our kids aren't having trouble is 1/2 apple juice and 1/2 grape juice mid-morning. Since we have started that we don't have any issues. We did run out of juices last week and skipped two days, low and behold my son went close to 48 hours with no BM.

Good luck!

Grapes and Apples are both great for her as well as water-I would continue to push both of those as much as you can. In the mean time though, I second the suggestion on the glycerin suppositories but I warn you to be prepared, it could get messy. Also, if someone recommends Miralax PLEASE be careful because it can truly cause some horribly stomach cramps-I know, I use it. HTH

Hello T L,

take milk out of her diet. also, buy a few baby pear jars and add it to her food. if you do decide to stay with the milk, add 1 tablespoon to her milk every day to help with her bowel movements. pears work as well as prunes without the extra painful gas that you can get with prunes. also, 1/2 teaspoon of milk of magnesia will help. I did that w/ my little girl. she was on miralax at 4 month old because she kept getting constipated. we use soy milk now. Good luck! I recommend to skip milk products for a couple of weeks and see how she does once she starts having regular bowel movements. ~C.~

I take care of this little girl and she was recently constipated. Her mom gave me this to give her and it worked within 2 or 3 hours. Pedia-lax. These are tasty chewable tabs. It's for 2-11 yr. old. Lonie
