Stomach Bug? - Maple Shade,NJ

My 4 year old daughter began complaining about her belly hurting on Monday night on and off. She seemed to be feeling okay in general, running around and playing. We had pizza for dinner, and against my advisement my husband allowed his father to treat her to ice cream. We drove home about 30 minutes, and upon getting out of the car she doubled over in pain and threw up all over my front walk. She got sick again about 5 hours later and that was it. The next day she was on bland diet and did great all day and night in into today. Today a also kept her on a conservative diet easing back into eating normally. Tonight I was taking the kids for pictures and on the way in the car she started complaining there was something in her throat and then threw up in her lap. (not a ton, but enough for me!) Then when we got home she was asking for food saying she was hungry. I offered her toast, soup, and ginger ale and she tolorated it fine. I am confused as to what the heck is going on. Has anyone experinced a virus like this recently? It seems mild, but why did it appear to come back? I am still waiting for the rest of the family to catch this.

What can I do next?

I'd agree that it could be car sickness. Had she eaten both times before she got in the car? Also I am not travel sick as long as I keep looking ahead. Does she read or color in the car?

Another idea would be the pepperoni on the pizza if she had any. Pepperoni can be the worst culprit for food poisoning.

If its neither of these then it may be a stomach bug or lastly could she be starting with a milk allergy? Was there anything else in the ice cream shes never had before?

Hope its just something simple and not a bug. Good luck

I am no where near a Dr. but that is almost exactly what happens to my niece when she gets strep throat. She has had it a few times this year and she would throw up off and on, complaining about her stomach and throat off and on. I wouldn't jump to an intolerance or allergy yet until you have more proof, it just happened after all(I am not saying to rule it out, it just seems too soon). It sounds like she has something like a virus. I am not sure how your pediatrician works but mine will talk to me over the phone briefly if I have a question. Maybe call your doctor and just ask if there is something going around that that sounds like. I do that sometimes so that I know what I am dealing with at home. Who knows, they might say to bring her in because it sounds like something they need to treat. Hang in there and I hope she is feeling better soon.

Hi D.-
originally i thought it woudl be dairy and it could be a dairy intolerance issue so when she had pizza it was ok, but add ice cream and her body rejects it. but then you did not mention dairy a couple of days later so now not sure.
but i would definitely start tracking what it is she is eating to see if there is a pattern with dairy intake or somethign else. it might actually be food allergies or intolerances rather than a virus.
hope that helps.

Maybe it's motion sickness...

Probably not a virus if it happens intermittently (I read that most time when someone thinks they have a "virus" they actually have food poisoning or a reaction to something they ate)but either food reaction or could be motion sickness? You mentioned being in the car twice.

I'm wondering too, if it might be dairy. I had a friend whose son kept throwing up off and on and diahrea for two weeks and as soon as they cut out his dairy he improved!
good luck

It sounds like it could be a stomach bug. She may not be able to tolerate dairy products. I would call the doctors office if she is still throwing up after today. If she has a allergy to milk or dairy products which you mentioned pizza then ice cream is what has me thinking it could be that. I would see also if she gets diarreha.I would keep her on the bland diet for another day or so and slowly give her back some of the foods she normally eats and see what happens especially with the diary stuff. good luck. no child that is sick is fun to take care of. no mother likes this part since we are the ones that wind up taking care of the sick children. good luck and take it easy.

I wonder if she is getting carsick, since both occurrances happened after a car ride? Make sure she diesn't look down in the car and has a clear view of the road. Hope she feels better!

Yes that same weird bug went through my house. My daughter had it and 2 days later my son then me and my husband. She should be fine now. It didn't last more than 24 hours on any of us and my throat felt that same way. my son was fine for about 5 hours and threw up again. Keep her bland foods for a few days but she shopuld be done throwing up. I gave my kids popsicles to keep them hydrated too.

My son had a stomach bug a few months back and it sounds like what happened to your daughter. He got sick one night, was fine the whole next day and night. The following day got sick again followed by an ok day, then he was sick for 4 days straight. He couldn't keep hardly anything down. Just call your doctor and see what they say. I didn't even bring my son in, b/c he didn't have a fever & they said it would take about 5 to 7 days for the stomach bug to run it's course and they were right. Good Luck, but just call your doc to make sure they don't need to see her. BTW neither I nor my husband caught the bug, thank goodness.
