Stinky Washing Machine Water

When we first moved here I noticed that whenever it rained, a stinky smell came through the drain in our laundry closet. Now, 5 years later, it is to the point that the closet always has that lingering smell, but when the washing machine is running the smell is strong and filling the house. This is happening even when it's not raining. It is kind of a sulfur smell but sweeter. Any ideas? We rent our home so I don't know much about it. I think the house is about 25 years old.

What can I do next?

Believe it or not running Pine Sol through your washer on a hot setting works.
You can even wash your towels in it to keep them from smelling like mildew over time! I see you are in Utah, I am actually taking my first trip to Sundance Resort in a few weeks- I hear it's beautiful there!!

Try pouring some hot bleach water down the drain. My husband run an empty load with just hot water and bleach once a week.

Are you on a well? If so , you may want to have that checked out. Might need to be cleaned, chlorinated, etc.

Good luck!

my mom had that.. tried HOT bleach washes... and ended up finding a DEAD MOUSE UNDER THE MACHINE!!!! yikes huh

Hi there,

There is a product specifically for that. It is called "Affresh". I think it costs about $7. You can get it at Home Depot of Lowes, and maybe at Walmart. It is three tablets that you run through your wash as if you are washing a load. So in essence you are going to run 3 loads. You may have to do this every month but you may not. We did once a couple of months ago and the smell is still gone.

Best wishes!
