Hi moms, my dishwasher has recently been emitting a sulfuric odor. What could be causing it and how can we get rid of the smell? It is very old, and should be replaced, but money is tight right now.

VINEGAR! Yes, I just did this yesterday at my home too. I had black gunk all over the place, and it cleared it all up. I typically run vinegar/water solution through my coffee pot too a few times a year to give it a good cleaning!

Once you check the bottom to make sure there is no food stuck in the bottom. There is a product called dishwasher magic, you can get it at walmart, target, and some grocery stores. It works wonders and only costs about 4-5 dollars.

Run it empty with the soap dispensers filled with baking soda. Magic after I checked all the traps and vents. Good luck!

I would suggest you run an empty cycle with just vinegar! Pour in 1-2 cups of vinegar at the bottom of the dishwasher and run it at the highest temperature! I'm sure it will get rid of any smells, and will also clean up any clogged pipes! Hope this helps!

my repair man tried to sell me tablets for that once so there is a product out there for that problem. I was preggers at the time and couldn't smell it myself so I didn't buy them. The smell magically disappeared at some point anyway.

My very old dishwasher did that recently. I dumped a bunch of vinegar in it and ran it through a short cycle. Did the trick!

Hi, Suzanne! If you've already cleared the drain in the dishwasher, try cleaning the dishwasher. A repairman recommended it to me to clean off the hard water spots in the dishwasher and we had amazing -- AMAZING -- results. I'm assuming if it could get the -- what seemed to be -- impossible stains off, I am sure it can kick the smell out, too.

I forgot the name of it, but it's only a few dollars and we picked it up at Menards. It's simple to use -- Just run a full cycle with no dishes. Easy!

Hope this helps!

There might be some food in there. Not all dishwashers have a food grinder in them so maybe there is some food stuck in the grate at the bottom that is emitting the smell. You may need to see if there is anything that can be cleaned out. Also, try running the dishwasher once with just soap on high setting and then run it once filling the dispensers with white vingar and running the thing on hot without any dishes and see if it helps.
