Stinky!
Hi! I am wondering if anyone has suggestions for a stinky nursery. I am very good about regular cleaning, and the rest of my house smells nice, but it seems like no matter what I've tried, NOTHING has helped aliviate the stench of poopy diapers in my daughter's room, even though we have a good diaper pail. I work in a class room of kiddos one day a week, so I know my daughter doesn't have perticulary stinky diapers. It's really frusrating because I'll air it out as much as I can, yet I have to shut her door for her when she naps, so the room is really bad again right when I walk in to get her up from her nap. Does anyone know how I can help her room smell fresher??? I don't care for really strong chemical sprays......I'm pretty desparate though:)

What helps me is the febreze noticeables. It is just like a glade plug in but you can really smell it and it gets the odors out. You can also try the regular febreze spray air effects that works great.

I put everything in the dumpster outside. If it is to far, get a trash to put outside your backdoor and empty every evening.

I have always had this problem as well. I use two approaches and the combo of the two seems to work like a charm for me. I put all poopy diapers in cheap Kroger brand ziploc bags before putting them in the diaper pail. I also use a vanilla breeze scented oil Glade Plug-in with nightlight right next to the diaper pail and now - my son's room smells FABULOUS! Good luck!

I used to keep kids in my home...all were in diapers. I had the diaper champ, I put a bag in it and sprinkled carpet powder in the bottom of the can and bag. When I changed the bag, I sprayed it down with Lysol and let it air for a few minutes before repeating with the carpet powder. IT worked for me.

I have a great diaper pail as well and found if I leave the stinkies in there one day it smells like poo in the room. So, now I take the poops out to the garage everytime. I use the pail for wet one's only. Have you tried burning some of the cotton smelling yankie candles. There is a children's boutique in Lewisville called Heaven's scent and they have these blue and pink candles for children's room that don't have to be lit at all for them to fill the room with fragance of fresh smelling cotton smell...they are wonderful - I buy two/three of those and just use them as decoration on my son's book shelf. And when they start to fade in smell I transfer them to his clothes draws and it freshens up his laundry. They work great and I think they are the safest alternative to lighting candles (which could be potentially dangerous with toddlers around). I am adverse to any of those sprays -- because that is just like loading up your house with chemicals which your liver than has to filter through just like it does when you wear perfumes. So, in my opinion, I prefer the more natural way of eliminating odors; but you will have to find what worst for you -- good luck....

At my old apartment, the only place for my trash can was inside of this closet. Every time I opened the door, the whole apartment would smell just horrible!!! I tried a lot of different stuff. The best thing I found was this powder that you put in your carpet to make it smell better. I put about a cup of that stuff and about a cup of baking soda in the bottom of the trash can (not in the trash bag) and it seemed to help. You have to change it about once every 2-3 weeks, but it worked for me.

When you take off diapers, fold it over (so it looks like it does when you take it out of the package) then roll it up starting at the crease, and use the tabs to fold over the diaper and seal it shut. For poopies I leave the wipes on top of the folder diaper and roll them up inside before attaching the tabs. That will help a lot. I also take the trash out daily. Cleaning the pail may help, too; perhaps some poop got on the pail - but if you close up the diapers this way you will never get poop on the pail again. Also I use a trash can lined with a trash bag, so when I throw out the bag there is no worries that poop is on the can. Finally, you can buy a smell "neutralizer" that will take away the smell. I found it at Elliot's Hardware; I think the name is "XO." I agree with other posters that I don't like a lot of chemicals in the air in baby's room, but if you have a horrible persistent smell perhaps it's worthwhile to spray a little in the air while the baby is not in the room; perhaps when baby will be out for hours. And we keep an air purifier on the the baby's room all the time. good luck. Did I mention that I have two sets of twins and the "roll-up" method I described has kept us from having any bad smell at all?

You can get an air purifier - we have one from either Home Depot or Lowe's - the brand is Honeywell. It's about the size of a small TV that you just plug in and set on the floor. It's very portable and you can use it in any room in the house. Sometimes we even leave it in our nursery while my daughter is asleep - it's great for 'white noise'.
Also - an occassional outside cleaning of the pail with a garden hose and bleach (or some kind of cleaner) can get the funk out.

I moved my son's diaper pail to the closest bathroom and now the bathroom stays a lil smelly but its better than his bedroom. I also get these little bags by sassy. They are light blue and they smell like baby powder. Every poopy diaper that I change gets tied into a little baggy before being placed in the pail. Its cut down the smell a lot. What kind of diaper pail do you have? Up until our diaper pail got kicked, it wouldn't let much smell out at all. Its the Diaper champ and you can use regular trash bags for it unlike the diaper genie. I also spray the diaper pail with lysol after every diaper goes in. Seems to work well for us. Good Luck!
