Still Fighting Thrush....
HI, I posted a while ago and got some great ideas to battle the nasty case of thrush that my daughter has, however, after two months of life, she still has a nasty thrush infection. I am no longer breast feeding (which in this case helps) as I have returned to work. We have tried Nystatin, gentian violet, and we are currently trying difulcan n(which I believe is upsetting our little girls stomach. We even took her to a naturopathic physician who placed her on some probiotics and an antifungal. None of this has worked, her little mouth is still coated with thrush. I have heard that we can try grapfruit seed extract. Has anyone used this treatment? If so how much did you dissolve in water and how often did you apply it? Also is it safe to use with diflucan. My pediatrician does not know anything about grapfruit seed extract as it is a natural remedy. I also heard coconut milk? I am also open to other suggestions if anyone has any. We are very frustrated with this, and hope to get rid of it soon!

My son had the same problem and then had to get his liver tested because of the high potency of the diflucan - finally another ped told me to put nystatin cream ON his tongue with a baby toothbrush - he told me the pharmaacy would think it was crazy but to do it - it worked! I'd try that.

My daughter (now 10-1/2 months) had a moderate case of thrush for quite a while, and it turned out that we couldn't use nystatin because *I* was allergic to it. We used a combination of things...gentian violet (on her tongue and my nipples), sterilizing the bottles/pacifiers/breast pump parts daily, and finally putting *me* on oral diflucan. The diflucan got rid of the yeast in/on my breasts and also passed to her in the breast milk. That was what finally got rid of both her thrush and her yeast diaper rash when she was about 6 or 7 months old. Maybe you could try that if you're still pumping and giving her breast milk?

Hi,
Did your doctor say that she still has thrush even after you have treated it? The reason why I as is because my now 6 month old had thrush pretty bad. We used a huge thing of Nystatin and then one treatment of the gentian violet. I healed but his mouth continued to be white inside. The doctor recently scraped some of it off inside his mouth. He is fine now and I no longer have sores from thrush but his mouth still remains white. I am sure you know what you are doing but just thought I would tell you. I thought for a long time that he still had thrush. Good luck!

That's alot of stuff for her little body to try and assimilate. Try getting her checked at a good family chiropractor. Sounds like she has some basic immune system stuff that could be connected to her birth process. You have nothing to lose (except the thrush) and everything to gain, natural support without an army of drugs that will only address the sym[toms, apparently not the cause of the thrush. Good Luck ! I have 4 kids and they (and I) get checked regularly.

Ask your naturopathic doctor about Glutamine Powder and if that would be good to try. Good luck! Natural remedies are always the best route to go if you can find one.

I read about a woman who uses Herbal Aloe Soothing Gel from Herbalife to help heal thrush.

Hi there,
I used grapefruit seed extract when my son had thrush (and I had to use it too b/c I was still nursing), however he was a little older and I was able to put it in juice... I don't know if formula would mask the bitterness of it. My bottle says adults 5-15 drops 1-3 times daily and for kids 1-3 drops , 1-2 times daily. It tends to settle at the bottom of the liquid if you don't just "chug it," so I would recommend using 1 drop at first in a small bottle first (formula I assume) to see how she does with that, then maybe increase the drops but keep the same amount of formula so she doesn't get all the bitterness in the bottom.
Hope it works for you as well as it did for us! It was cleared up in a few short days, if I remember correctly.

Hi K.,
My girl had thrush and our pediatrician told us it would just go away on its own, and it did. Often despite treatment, thrush re-occurs or is difficult to erradicate. If your child is eating OK, then just let it go away on its own.
