Sticky Goo

How do you get the goo off after you remove a product sticker? I bought a new shiny stainless steel bowl with a sticker on the inside--right in the middle. I don't want to scratch or dull the surface, but the goo is just not coming off. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Peanut butter will remove anything sticking to anything! I once used it to remove a poster from a wall-then I had to clean the wall from the peanut butter however it did not remove the wall. My daughter recently had the same problem you have with a dish and she did the peanut butter and yes it took the sticker right out. (leave it set for at least 15 minutes). Then she simply washed her dish. And it was one of those non-stick dishes you cannot use sharp thigs on. This is great and cheap!

There are products you can purchase that will work, but there are items you probably already have around your house that will do the job just as well. I use rubbing alcohol or vegetable oil. If neither of those work, you can also try a degreasing cleaner, baby oil, nail polish remover...Many options. Of course there's always the duct tape method. Just keep sticking the duct tape on the goo and pulling it off until the goo is all gone.

K., I know you may have already tried some of the suggestions and I'm a bit late in replying. I wouldn't use lighter fluid, rubbing alcohol, WD40, Goo Gone, nail polish remover or acetone on anything I would later use for food. I've never tried peanut butter.

If your still looking for a solution, there are safer products to use to remove the sticky goo and they are safe for food containers and not harmful to you. I'd love to share these products with you.

I learned from my mother that peanut butter of all things works excellent for removing sticker residue from price tags, etc. I use it all the time...just smear some on the surface of where you want "sticky" removed and let it sit a bit...then you can usually scrap/wipe it away. Note: on some very sticky stickers you might have to repeat the process.
Best of luck :)

From all the ideas you have been offered, I was surprised to see only one suggestion for WD-40. So many Mamasource queries are searching for how to get crayons or silly putty out of carpet, gum out of hair, etc. WD-40, I'm told, can even keep bathroom mirrors fom steaming up. Although it is petroleum based (and is not made of fish oil, as rumors suggest) it doesn't tend stain and is reported to be a great spot remover when needing to get out something that is oil or wax based, such as lipstick. I have found it to work very well for removing gummy sticker residue, but keep in mind that you should be careful if the sticker is stuck to something with a waxed surface. It is a solvent.

You can find a list of what WD-40 can do on snopes.com or about.com. But, keep in mind that this is a petroleum based product and needs to be washed away well when using it on dishes. I don't use it near foods.

I don't know why companies are not forced to find adhesives that do not create these problems for all of us. The one that troubles me most is trying to get the grocerie store stickers off fruit like plums. The skin comes off with them and then the fruit needs to be used immediately. I think we should all start calling the stores and manufacturers that are creating these problems for all of us and tell them to spend a few more bucks on for better stickers. If enough people make suggestions, companies often listen.

Peanut Butter works GREAT! Just rub a little PB on the sticker and it will come off. I use it all the time when they put stickers on the glass of picture frames. I've used the Goo B Gone and found that it doesn't do that Great of a job. I tried it on some tape I had on a window from sticking Holiday things on it and it didn't take it off. So I used PB. The Goo B Gone smells bad and my husband spilled some on a rented video game and it completely ate the disc. Needless to say I had to purchase the ruined video game. I used it on some crayon on the wall and it took the paint off too!

Also I have had good results with just hot hot water soak with a tad bit of dish soap, use your thumb nail to remove it. Bed Bath & Beyond has a little plastic scraper I call it an Extra Thumb, you can use it on anything and it will not scratch the surface.
