Steam Vegetables

I am not sure if this is a moot point or not... I thought a while back Ziploc made bags you could steam vegetables in. I'm not sure if they still do or not.

Anyway my question is, if these bags are still available can you put any frozen vegetables in them to steam in the microwave? I like to buy the 5# bags of frozen vegetables at Sam's but have found the little steam packets more convenient than waiting for water to boil on the stovetop. Besides being expensive the steam packets just do not contain enough vegetables for 4 "real" servings.

Thanks for yoru help!

Skip the bags and just microwave the frozen veggies in a covered bowl and they will steam themselves.

I steam veggies in the microwave without any special bags. I just put them in a Pyrex bowl, maybe with a touch of extra water, depending on what I'm cooking, cover with a microwave safe plate and cook for 2-5 minutes, again depending on what is in the bowl, fresh broccoli takes longer, frozen peas less time. You may have to stir once during cooking.

Cant help on the bags availability, but just wanted to remind you that anything microwaved is radiated. The microwave was invented by a guy who left his chocolate bar too close to radioactive material. He found it melted and got an idea.....
We do use a microwave at home, but we always use paper plates or paper towels to reheat or warm. I feel that any plastic in the microwave will release chemicals into whatever food is in it or touching it. Maybe the PBAs or whatever it was in the baby bottles that was released when warmed.
Not trying to preach just raised to be wary. There are so many chemicals in our food already.

Buy one of those steamer thingys and just do it on the stove, I agree with steering away from plastic and the microwave. I'm finally at an age where I actually care about my health... and I have read a lot of controversial issues about plastic and heat, and when you add up all the new diseases and syndromes we are all facing I honestly do believe there is a link. I havent noticed those steamer bags lately, maybe they have taken them off the market for just that reason? If plastic doesnt scare you, you can always put the veggies in a glass dish and cover it tightly with plastic wrap. Add only a few tablespoons of water to the dish and cook on high for a little while in the nuker... when you turn it off, if the plastic wrap sinks in and vacuums to the bowl you know your veggies are hot and steamed. That's the way I always did ours. Now I'm a stove top girl and use mostly iron skillets even tho they are heavier than hell.

I'm afraid of the toxins in plastic / microwave thing too. I cheat and buy the steamer vegetables every once in a while. You can steam them in the microwave in a bowl with a little splash of water and an upside down plate over the bowl. Also - at Walmart etc.. you can buy an inexpensive little collapsible steamer basket that fits in just about any pan. You just put an inch or two of water under it, toss the veggies on top, cover with a lid and it really doesn't take long on the stove at all... 2 inches of water will boil quickly. The steamer basket is dishwasher safe too - mine stands right up like the plates. Good luck!

I agree with not using the bags. Plastic is a big problem in landfills, these packets are expensive, and I'm not sure what happens to plastic when it's heated. I use a metal steamer in a pot with about 1 inch of water. The steamer adjusts to fit any pot, and it's dishwasher safe. (Trick - I put if over the lightweight things that tend to fly around the dishwasher - it holds them in place and the holes allow the dishwater to flow through!) Raw veggies take 6-8 minutes (less for zucchini, more for broccoli and beans). I start the veggies timed to finish with the pasta or rest of the meal and it really doesn't take long - it's the shortest-cooking part of the meal! For frozen veggies, just put in a handful and steam a few minutes until they are hot. If there is a big amount, you might need to break them up halfway thru cooking.

For microwave, just put frozen veggies in a glass bowl with no extra water (there's ice on them already, often), or just a splash, and cover with a paper towel or a plate. This is cheaper.

There absolutely are toxins in plastic bowls and bags. When heated, it leeches into your food. I steam in microwave with glass and a little water, upside down plate as a cover or on the stovetop like some of the other ladies who responded. It takes 8 minutes. It's great you're feeding the family their veggies!

I agree with all posts on the toxins in plastic. I am shocked that Birds Eye and other companies keep making the Steam Fresh bags for microwaves! Microwaving in plastic is a giant no no. I use a glass Pyrex bowl and steam in this. Cheap, reusable and safe.

Pampered Chef makes a nice veggie steamer for the microwave. But really, any (non-plastic) bowl, with a little water & a plastic wrap lid will do.
Not sure about the Ziplock bags.....
My new pasta pot came with a nice steamer tray for stove-top use, which is nice, too.

I always microwave in glass- too many toxins in the plastic. So not worth it for the "convenience"-- takes 10 seconds to pour into a safer bowl.
