Hi ladies. I was wondering if any of you have ever used vinegar in your steam cleaner? I have a Bissel and the solution can get pretty pricey. So I"m always looking for ways to save money,. I am also a very big fan of using vinegar for dozens of household chores. Vinegar, although not so pleasant smelling at first, does eliminate all sorts of other odors and is very helpful with getting things clean and taking out stains. I thought that it only made sense to use it in my steamer, but my husband is skeptical and thinks that I shouldn't. He's concerned that it might actually ruin the steamer. So, have any of you ever used vinegar in your steam cleaners? Was it successful? Does it clean as well as the recommended solution? Does it leave your carpet smelling fresh? Did it affect your steamer in any negative way?
Thank you in advance for your help.

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies for your answers. I knew that I could count on you. I know now that I won't be using vinegar in my Bissel electric steamer. Don't want to risk any damage to my seals or O rings. I guess my husband was right (darn it!). So now, atleast I know tthat I have some less expensive and safer alternatives to the harsh chemicalss.
Thanks again.

I had a Bissell Quick Steam, purchased at the same time as a friend. She's already on her third one as she won't quit using Vinegar solution in it, as it's cheaper. Inspecting them, the only thing wrong was the seals were all dissolved and crumbled from the high acidity.

Walmart makes a Bissell safe cleaner for them that way cheaper and cleans just as well. For odor elimination, there is an orange based cleaner, and an allergen cleaner that are both awesome. The only thing that I buy that is Bissell Brand is their spot cleaner/pretreater, as it really tears through stains without stinking up the house and ruining the carpet.

Hope this helps.

My mom tried it and it ate the seals in her cleaner. She had to order new ones and new o-rings. I wouldn't do it unless you have to. That being said, I have used it on my Floormate and not had any problems at all. The person at Bissell told my mom they make special seals and that you can only use Bissell products in it. Sorry. I personally wouldn't risk it.

My steam cleaner uses plain water. Only water. Nothing else. You could try that.

I own a Shark, so I am unfamiliar with how a Bissel steamer works. Are you talking about a steam mop? I only use water in mine, per the directions.

I wouldn't use it, as the acid in the vinegar will wear down the rubber seal
