Stay-at-home Mom Title

Anyone have a good suggestion for a better fitting title than stay-at-home Mom when you reach that "occupation" line on forms? I am being both serious and humorous asking this question because writing stay at home Mom makes it sound like I sit around eating bon bons all day!

What can I do next?

That's a good one! I also like "Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations." Helps people appreciate how important the job really is.

I agree that the only ones who might think it's an easy life is the one with no kids. I recently bumped into an old friend from high school. He is some sort of environmental engineer or something. When I emailed that I was a SAHM, he said he had to look that acronym up. Then he commented that he didn't think he could do that all day long. My point is that even those men who have very technical jobs understand how hard we work, even if they have never heard the title before.

But, if it makes you feel better to use a different title, I vote for household manager or the CEO suggestions. =)

I go with the Domestic Engineer. I actually had business cards made up with my phone and email on it. It was a special offer for free cards, and they are great to give out whenever my kids need contact information or a parent who is taking kids, etc. I put my husband as the CEO. LOL Most people get a kick out of it and they tend to remember me! LOL

I thought you mind enjoy this story!!!

Just a Mom?
A woman, renewing her driver's license at the County Clerk's office was
asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation. She hesitated,
uncertain how to classify herself. "What I mean is," explained the
recorder, "do you have a job or are you just a...?" "Of course I have a
job," snapped the woman.

"I'm a Mom." "We don't list 'Mom' as an occupation, "housewife covers
it," said the recorder emphatically. I forgot all about her story until one
day. I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall.
The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient and possessed of
a high sounding title like, "Official Interrogator" or "Town Registrar."

"What is your occupation?" she probed.

What made me say it? I do not know. The words simply popped out. "I'm a
Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.
The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair and looked up as though
she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly emphasizing the most
significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was
written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in your field?"

Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I
have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn't) in the
laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out)
I'm working for my Masters, (the whole darned family) and already have
four credits (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding
in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 14
hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most
run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather
than just money"
There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she
completed the form, stood up and personally ushered me to the door.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I
was greeted by my lab assistants -- ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs

I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby) in the child development
program, testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt I had scored a beat on
bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more
distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another Mom."

Motherhood! .. What a glorious career! Especially when there's a title
on the door.
Does this make grandmothers "Senior Research associates in the field of
Child Development and Human Relations" and great grandmothers

"Executive Senior Research Associates"? I think so!!!

I also think it makes Aunts "Associate Research Assistants."

I really don't see why SAHM isn't sufficient. Sure there are a few assholes who don't understand what work it is to stay home with children, but for the most part, people are pretty understanding of the "job".

The only people who get the vision of eating bon bons all day when they hear the term at-home-mom are the ones who have never done it!! Its not an easy job and those of us who sign on don't get enough credit. I've heard of people using the term caregiver,or homemaker... I myself prefer Domestic Goddess! Good luck, and remember that no matter what anyone else percieves your job to be or what title you have you are doing the most important job there is, and your kids are benefiting from it every day.

A friend of mine refers to herself as a "household manager", I think, and she went so far as to make her own "business cards". They have her name and contact information on them, so when she meets someone new who she wants to get in contact with her, she just hands them her card. I may end up doing that some day, myself!

SAHM's have one of the hardest jobs around - Dr. Phil says it's the equivalent of 2 jobs because you're not only watching the kids (1 job) but your maintaining the house too (2nd job).

My next door neighbor watches our 2 daughters and would get SO MAD when her husband would criticise her saying that she "does nothing all day but watch TV" because we know that watching 2 kids isn't easy, and you can't just get by watching TV all day.

I've heard some SAHM's use the title "Domestic Engineer"; some have said they "run their own daycare" (nobody has to know it's just her kids!); how about "freelance home-care engineer"? or "Independent consultant" (you consult with your husband on what goes on with the house and kids, right?). Or maybe even Domestic Contractor (because you have to keep a tight schedule? "contract" with places like Schwan's to deliver food, or with the doctors offices for appointments, etc.)

Keep thinking about it - you'll find something that you can put down that won't make you feel like you sit around all day eating bon-bons!! :)

For what it's worth.....

Hi, I would say domestic engineer. There is always something to fix and it's in your domain. I' ve heard this before. That's what I call my self. Ya, people tend to look down on SAHM and think they just sit around all day, not in my house. I have 2 boys, ages 2 and 4 and I think none of use ever sit down. But being a Mom is the most important, hardest, and rewarding job anyone could have. Good luck with the employment forms!

Hi K.:

I know exactly what you mean - I was a stay-at-home mom for 15 years and was proud of it; you should be too!!! I just recently went back to work part-time (although out of necessity) and am loving this new phase of my life.

As for your title, I used "Homemaker" - as we have definitely made a home for our families (in between sitting around eating the bon bons!!)!!! Then when I was being interviewed I would say I prefer the title of "Domestic Goddess" - they usually liked that one!!!

Good Luck!!!!

domestic engineer is great, often i just use self employed. After all what we do IS work, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, with no time off, no sick days and paycheck. not that I mind working so hard for hugs and smiles, but people who think this is easy need to actually try to do it for a week.

One of the very finest alternative titles for Stay-at-Home Mom may be from a very
unusual source: The Mongol Empire! The term is Otchigin. It means Guardian
of Hearth and Home. The Otchigin was highly esteemed when a warrior was
out campaigning with the khan's horde.
