Stay at Home Moms - Orlando,FL
I have a question for those of you that are able to stay home with
your children. Forgive me, if it turns out to be too personal of a
question, but I am just really curious and interested.
How do you manage to be able to stay at home? How do you afford the
mortgage, utilities, etc.? With home prices as high as they are, it
seems pretty hard to pay a mortgage on just one salary.
I would really love to be able to stay home with my baby girl, but at
this point, we cannot live on my husband's salary alone. I have tried
looking for work at home employment, but can't find anything that's
legit and a steady income - only the surveys and such (which aren't
Please do share any tips, advice, or your experience with this.

When I had my oldest I ended up single and had to work FT. When I got married and had my 2nd though, I was determined to stay home but we needed my income, so I looked into working from home. I already had a little experience in medical transcription from working in a doctor's office a few years back, so I used that to try to get a job. It was VERY hard, it is a legit career, you get paid what you produce (type), and it's hard to get into. I would recommend taking a course to get started, and they cost money, but it truly is a career and totally worth it if you ask me. I work 7 days a week and get up at 4am b/c I choose to so I only have to work 5 hours or so a day and I can be w/my kids, take them to dr appts, go on field trips, volunteer at the school, etc. It truly is the best of both worlds, even if the work isn't easy, much less w/3 little ones running around. There is A LOT of useful info at www.mtchat.com. There is a discussion forum there that people have posted answers to every question you ever need to know about medical transcription. Good luck!

Hi M.! In addition to the advice you have already received and as a way of making residual income, you may want to consider looking into something that has caught my attention. If not, I truly wish you and your family the best of luck!
I have been a member of MamaSource since my son was born last summer (June 2006) at Winnie Palmer Hospital. Following my 3-month maternity leave, it was financially necessary for me to return to work as a corporate investment banker, even though I craved the opportunity to be able to stay at home with my baby. Following a corporate reorganization at my work in late 2006, which required my colleagues and I to choose between relocating to another office out-of-state or accepting severance packages, my husband and I decided to take a leap of faith - and I took the severance package. In a short amount of time, I was introduced to an extremely innovative product and income-producing opportunity that I could accomplish from home - called "Send Out Cards". Like many of you, I had been frustrated with the lack of quality work-from-home opportunities - never knowing what was ligitimate and what was not. Send Out Cards is an all-around "good", allowing you to touch the lives of people you interact with every day in a thougtful, meaningful way.

You can even include gift cards and personal checks! After you design a greeting at sendoutcards.com web site with all the tools mentioned above, the Send Out Cards system prints it, stuffs it, stamps it and mails it to your recipients.

My husband works for the big mouse, and as everyone knows, there isn't much money in theme parks, however he works overtime when possible to help with the bills. I worked full time with an accountant before having my little baby girl (now 3 1/2 months). I plan on working part time from home doing taxes for that accountant come January through April (tax season).
I am also in the tradeshow business part time. What that is, is you audition for agencies and you work maybe 3 or 4 days a month, but you travel to the tradeshows. It is considered "promotional modeling". The agencies get picky over looks etc, but if you are what they are looking for it's a breeze. It is really good money. One show will give me about $1,000 if it is a good show. I justify working out of town 4 days in a row and having my wonderful mother in law babysit so I can work those days because I don't have to work full time and have to put my child through daycare.
My next show is for 10 days, and I am sad to part with her for that long...but then again, our bills are paid.
Also, we live in a condo, because yes the prices in Orlando are psycho for people who actually work here! Our mortgage is still $1,000/month. !!!
hope my crazy email helped!

That's an interesting request. My mother stayed home with 4 kids. She still doesn't work and her youngest is 14. My father works a full-time job and does freelance work on the side. He works 24 hour days. At least it always felt that way. We had a mother full-time, but practically no dad. Just this guy who payed the bills (bless his heart).
Because of that I always said I would work when I had my own kids so my husband and I could share the joy of parenthood. But working and having a baby didn't work for me. I called in frequently and eventually had to cut back my hours dramatically. It meant some lifestyle changes for my husband and I, but I didn't care anymore. We weren't exactly living large to begin with, but there were still things we were able to give up. I still worked, but not as much and I was able to convince my boss to let me work at home some. My point is that if you really want to do this, you have to make sure your husband agrees and change whatever you have to in order to make it happen.
My husband left me recently and now I have no choice but to work...and very full-time. I never understood how people could get by on a single income either, but now I am learning. It can be done and sometimes it has to be done. So I really hope you can work it out. Your daughter will benefit and so will you. Those months at home with my son were precious. He's a year old now and it really flew by. Good luck. I hope to pick up some tips from the mothers who give you advice!
