I am a stay at home Mom, but recently have decided to start a small cake business. I have been doing cakes for a few years now for weddings, birthday parties etc. and love creating really unique cakes (I mostly work with fondant... like the show "Ace of Cakes" and bundt cakes). My husband is very supportive and is helping me make the business a little more official. We have a business license and use a Fresno County Health approved kitchen, and will be doing the Clovis Farmer's Market this Summer with our mini bunt cakes, and we have put a website up for our business. The problem is that I am not very good at marketing, in fact I hate marketing, but I love creating. I thought there might be some business oriented Moms out there who would have some suggestions about the best and easiest way to market our business. I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi K.! I live in Clovis too! I don't know much about marketing. I would be willing to help spread by word of mouth. Whats your website? I have just started going to MOPS(Mothers of Preschoolers) meetings. It would be easy to spread the word via other moms. I love the Clovis farmers market and will look foward to seeing you there. You can list your business under the local business reviews here at mamasource. Congratulations!

Hi K.,

You might want to check with the Business Department at Fresno State. I remember when my husband was going to school, they did a project for a woman that needed something marketed. Many college students have very clever ideas! Good luck with your cake business! I'll stop by to talk with you at the Clovis Farmer's Market!

Hi K.! Maybe you could also get into the Shaw/Blackstone farmer's market as well, on Saturdays? My other thought was, perhaps go around to some of the popular kids' party places, like Pump it Up, My Girl, Little Gym, etc and see if they have an approved vendors list. If so, you could get your name on there as a suggested vendor. That way when parents book parties they can do a "one-stop shop" kind of thing and order the cake when they book their party. Or, give small sample cakes to a few wedding planners in the area, or church offices at some of the larger churches. Those people will be able to give you great referral business and it will be at very little cost to you. Good luck! I will look for you at the farmer's market!

I use vista print.com for all my stuff. Sometimes all you really have to pay for is shipping, there's always something that is free or 1/2 off. Most of it is done for you. You just have to input your stuff and hand it out at your farmers market or take your cards/printouts to bridal shows. Also if you drive around a lot you can buy a car magnet and put it on your doors of your car. :)
