Starting a Book Club for Kids

hi! i am interested in starting a book club for kids ages 3-8. i was wondering if anyone had some good advice on how to start one, where a good place to meet for the monthly activity could be, and what great books you have read with your kids. my goal is to have a monthly meeting for the kids to get together and talk about the book or act it out, or come dressed as their favorite character, etc. then the moms could put together a snack that was in keeping with the theme of the story. you get the idea. any thoughts? thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

i finally got my act together and started a Meetup group to help organize it. we decided to make it a book exchange based on a theme of the month. each child brings a book from their own shelf to exchange and talk about it (with the help of mom) and at the end of the meetup, picks a book to take home from the ones brought. it will (hopefully) go off without a hitch!! thanks for everyone's encouragement along the way.

G.,
What part of town are you in? My facility, J.'s Party Pad, would be a great location to host your event at. We are starting enrichment programs this fall which include KidzArt, Lil' Laptop Learners, and Gymnastics, and your bookclub would be a fabulous add. Our preschool would be a great foundation for students, plus the interest you seem to have already would be a great hit. I do agree with the advice about too wide of an age range. Maybe 2 seperate books. Please call me at ###-###-#### at your earliest convienence so we may talk details.

That is a great idea. You could advertise on www.meetup.com. You could approach Barnes and Noble and ask if you could meet there once per month in their children's section of the bookstore. Our's here in Gilbert (Germann Rd.) has a little stage that would be perfect for this. I may be interested in joining your group. I have a 7 and 5 year old.

My only thought is that that is a VERY big age range in terms of reading skills and interests. I have a 7 year old and almost 3 year old, and there's no way my 7 year old would get very interested in a 3 year olds book, or a 3 year old sit through one that my oldest likes. Plus, my 7 year old can read, while the youngest obviously can't. I'd do maybe ages 3-5.

This sounds like a fabulous idea. I love it. I know your post is a little old now so I was wondering if you have started this.

thanks

What a great idea. And I commend you G. for taking the initiative! I would be interested in joining if you are planning on doing this in the east valley. My boys are 2 and 3. Please let me know if you do put this together. Thanks.

As everyone else has said this is SUCH a GREAT idea! I have a 3 year old that I would love to be involved as well..We live in Gilbert...give me a call if we could join your group. ###-###-####

My sister's friend started a book club, they would rotate every month and go to a different house...they would also rotate snacks. I think they would meet for an hour. Good luck, sounds like fun!
