Stand Mixers - Silver Spring,MD
Okay, I love to make cakes and actually do a lot of b-day cakes for people. I use hand mixers and blow through them fairly often. I make my own fondant and icing and it really zaps the motor. I also have to turn down orders b/c I just don't have the right equipment to knock out a whole lot them. Well my aunt has decided to buy me a stand mixer! I just need to tell her which one I want. She will pay a high price for one, but I want to get the most bang for my(her) buck and not go to pricey. Do you have a stand mixer? Which one? I know Kitchen Aid makes several, but I am not set on that brand. Kinda leary of the glass bowls, have visions of breaking it, but who knows. Know a make or model I should avoid? TIA

We have a Kitchen Aid mixer. It's awesome. You can also get a lot of attachments & such for it. (Grinders, even an ice cream maker attachment!). Mine has a stainless steel bowl, not glass & I love it. We make homemade bread, cake batter, cookies, buttercream frosting, etc. If you shop around you can get it on sale for around $100 or a little over that.

The kitchenaid mixers are fabulous. You can't go wrong. There are tons of accessories available if you want them. Mine has a metal bowl. Buy one of the more powerful ones - you won't regret it!
My mom got hers as a wedding gift in 1971 and still uses it regularly.

If you are going to do things for people you need to get a mixer that is time tested. I have a KA that lifts up and down and not back. My DIL has the one that lifts back. Either is good but I prefer the lift up and down one.
There are so many things you can while the machine is mixing the contents and you don't have to stand there holdling the mixer while it mixes and get tired.
The bowls are stainless steel so you don't have to worry about dropping adn breaking them you could get a dent or two but they will continued to work. You can get attachments to do things you want as you change your cooking needs.
I also use mine to make body creams and whip the ingredients together and make them light and fluffy before packaging.
It may cost more in the beginning but it will be less in the long run. How many hand mixers have you bought? It could have been the cost of one good mixing machine that still keeps going. Besides you can send them in for repair if necessary.

I have a Kitchen Aid that my late MIL bought in the early 1980's. It's about 30 years old and still going strong. Given the baking that you do, you will never regret investing in a Kitchen Aid. It's simply the best of the best. Mine has a 4.5-quart metal bowl and it's totally fine for what I do, which is a lot of baking, including large cakes, huge batches of fondant and frosting, big batches of bread dough, double batches of cookie dough, etc. I think that most of the newer ones come with a 5-qt bowl as the standard. I have never seen a glass bowl on a stand mixer - all the ones I see are metal.
The one I have would probably be closest to the Classic, which is a little over $200 and available everywhere. You can probably upgrade to the Artisan (5-qt bowl) for not much more - I see them on sale all the time for $250.
Have fun with this - it IS and investment but it is sooo worth it. I can't imagine baking without one.

I have an older Kitchenaid, and it has a metal bowl. It has been a great stand mixer! I'm sorry that it's going to "retire" any time now, which I know will happen from the sound of the motor.
When I look for an expensive appliance like this, I go online and look for customer reviews. They're always on Amazon, and sometimes on other sites. Although you need to read carefully (some people review an item before they've even used it!), you might find some good information about various products. A brand name that "has always been good" may be a whole different machine now, made by a whole different company. So you are wise to do your homework.

I have a kitchen aid artisan that I got as a wedding gift and I LOVE it. It's really versatile since there are multiple attachments. For example, it has a food/meat grinder; grater/slicer; pasta maker and probably about a dozen other attachments. The artisan series also comes in multiple colors to match your kitchen or just your favorite color and the bowl is stainless so you can't break it. I also bought one for my mom for her birthday and shopped around. At the time, I found one on Amazon for a great sale price so if you're patient you can find one for under 200 (not including shipping and/or tax), but if you get it through Amazon shipping was free.
