How do I get permanent marker out of my linoleum kitchen floor?? My two year old took a black sharpie to the floor today. I am freaking out because we just bought a house and are trying to get this house ready to sell. Any ideas?!?!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It came out!! I used a combination of Magic Eraser and COMET. The Eraser lightened it up a good bit and the COMET finished the job after two scrubbings. I was totally impressed. Thanks for the ideas!

Try acetone (fingernail polish remover). It has worked for me in the past with permanent marker on hard plastic. You have to scrub with a soft cloth- but it usually works.
Good luck!

magic eraser (0.50 at dollar general)
hairspray
rubbing alcohol
nail polish remover
goo be gone (auto supply area of walmart)
hand cleaner for mechanics - this is not's it's actual name. It removes auto grease from hands and can be found in the auto supply section of walmart or any auto parts store (most men have some in their "tools supplies" especially if they have ever done anything with cars.

Good luck :)

Hey S.,

My son took a blue permanent marker to my white kitchen cabinets. Thankfully, we were able to get most of it off using WD-40 and Goof-Off (also sold as Goop Off and various other names).

Good luck!

Soft scrub or magic eraser blocks should do the trick. Make the the soft scrub has clorox bleach in it. They are making some that do not, example the orange kind. Good luck...

I have a little bottle of some stuff that I only pull out when nothing else fails, and it always works. I am stingy with it because it's from the company Melaleuca, which you have to be a member of to get good prices, etc. But, I have this tiny bottle, and I am considering just buying the big one at the non-member price because it's so awesome. It's called Sol-U-Mel. Awesome.

Hi S.! Been there and done that with the permanent black sharpie marker. My daughter actually got a hold of one and wrote all over her hands and a fabric book. In the process she got it on her new capris and shirt. I used Sol U Mel, an incredible cleaner from a company called Melaleuca the Wellness Company. I have been purchasing my household cleaning products as well as all of our other consumable products we use for the last 2 1/2 years from Melaleuca. I have found that I spend WAY LESS than when I purchased them at Walmart (I was a terrible impulse buyer)and have had much better results with their products. I have seen and repeated a demonstartion where we took a linoleum sample and wrote all over it with a sharpie marker and then compared Clorox clean up with Sol U Mel and the Sol U Mel took all the marker off immediately and without scrubbing as with the Clorox which did not remove all of it. Fortunately, the Sol U Mel is safe for our two year old whereas the Clorox Clean Up has chemicals in it that are harmful if inahled, absorbed into her skin, or swallowed. I would be happy to share with you more about the company and their products. We have been so happy with our experience. Just email me. ____@____.com

Nail polish remover removes sharpie, but try it in an inconspicuous area of the floor first, to make sure it doesn't discolor the floor or you'll have a worse problem on your hands.

I would definitely try the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser first. If that doesn't get it all, you can try a cleanser like Ajax. You do have to be careful, though, and test the cleanser first because it could remove any wax coating the floor has.

I took permanent marker off a bench a couple of weeks ago with Sol U Mel. It's made of natural oils so you don't need gloves and you don't need to worry about kids getting into it and poisoning themselves. My email's ____@____.com if you want more info.

Try a product called Grease Lightening. Wear gloves, but it works like magic. I had the same problem and the Sharpie came up INSTANTLY. I have linoleum on my floor as well.

mr clean majic eraser. it works wonders! Try it on marks on the floor, wall, etc. Be warned, once you make a clean mark you will probably have to clean the whole floor (it reminds me of a mini water pressure cleaner, once you start you can't stop) They are great, I use it all the time. Even marks going up the stairs where people marked the wall with luggage years ago, it took it right off!
Good Luck.

This may sound nuts, but try everclear alcohol (the kind you can drink). We used to use it as a substitute for straight ethanol in lab experiments for kids when I was in graduate school. It is more potent than rubbing alcohol and should get out the marker if the rubbing alcohol doesn't work. Good luck!

I've had to remove sharpie off a counter and the rubbing alcohol worked fine. It did lighten the color a little, so be careful if it's a darker floor. Otherwise like mentioned by others, there isn't anything those magic erasers haven't gotten off for me!

Try Mr Clean, the white eraser in the box that advertises that you can buy at any stores, walmart, home depot and so on. If this can not get it off -put down new flooring because the market is very hard and only the best houses at the lowest prices is going to sell in this market!
Keep Mothering,
