Stain Out of Carpet

Sorry to discuss such a terrible subject but you always come to my rescue! Due to what I believe was food poisoning, my 3 1/2 year old and myself became sick within a 1/2 hour of each other. Unfortunately, he did not make it to the bathroom in time and we now have a stain in our tan carpet. Do any of you ladies have any good carpet cleaning tricks?

Also-any one experience food poisoning and how do I tell if that is the problem?
Thank so much and wish us good luck ;)

The best thing to remove the SMELL from the carpet is a hot water & vinegar rinse after you have cleaned the carpet with a carpet cleaner. I have asthmatic kids, and all of them have thrown up on their carpets (and we removed all the carpets, now), but I bought a carpet cleaner, and we would pre-treat stains with oxyclean, let sit, use a hot water & small amount of soap, and then the vinegar rinse for smell. Vinegar also removes any bubbles from residual soap, but it does not remove soap. I heated the water in my tea kettle as my carpet cleaner does not "steam heat" the water.

borax is the main ingredient in most cleaners with stain boosters so I just buy that since it is so much cheeper anyway, it is on the laundry aisle. you put it on the stain dab it in and then vacuum it out. I have a spot bot that I go over it with if that doesnt get all of it out.
this website has great info on food poisoning, and what to do while you have it.

Immediately put carbonated water or soda or 7-up or something similar on the stain. Give it time to work. The bubbles bring the stain up. Then get a towel and work the stain in a circular pattern and dab it up instead of rubbing it in. Repeat as needed. My mom's husband is a carpet cleaner. My mom is a nurse. Do you have any other symptoms besides the vomiting? If you have no other symptoms --- you probably did get food poisoning. You need to figure out what it was that the two of you ate. Make sure you are washing your hands regularly w/ soap and water. Cook your food thoroughly. Wash your food thoroughly. Throw away food that has expired or has been left out too long. If you have other symptoms --- you'd have to describe them for me to surmise. Hope you feel better and good luck getting the stain out. If you can't get out the stain after all of the advice you get --- hire a professional steam cleaner.

OxyClean--the spray works great!

Also if it is food poisoning, usually your nail beds will be blueish...(I believe, it has been a while).

Good luck! Stay on the B.R.A.T. diet for a few days after the vomiting stops (especially your 3 1/2 year old).

Hi Lisa,
Oxyclean, the powder used for laundry, put water with some and make a mixture a little thinner than paste but still mostly oxyclean, pour it on the carpet, let it sit for 10 minutes, vacuum up the powder and use a towel to absorb the moisture, you may need to rinse it with clear water afterwards. The stain and smell will be gone with no after smell of chemicals.
Hope your feeling better, good luck,
SarahMM

There is a really great spot remover from Capture (I believe it's called Spot Remover). I know you can get it at Sears, but I don't know where else you can get it. I don't really follow the instructions (it says to spray and wait and then maybe blot). I spray a ton of it on the spot, wait a few minutes, and then scrub the area with a wet rag. If it's a really bad spot I may have to do it a few times.

use the oxy clean carpet cleaner that's in a blue bottle with a yelow top. You can also try a mixture of about 1/3 peroxide & 2/3 water & use a steam cleaner.

A cleaning solution called Folex (White bottle, pink solution). You can get it at Walmart. Just need a little bit, so the bottle goes a long ways! Also, if you have a Spot Bot (available at Linens N things), they work great. Good luck!

My mother-in-law, just this past week, shared with me that my FIL cut himself and bled quite a bit on their tan carpet. She had recently learned from Martha Stewart that she could use hydrogen peroxide to remove the stain...and it worked without changing the color of the carpet! I know blood isn't vomit, but I wonder if that would work for that, too. If you decide to try it, let me know if it worked for that...I'd really like to know! One other thing, I believe she said she didn't dilute it...just put it on a cotton pad and rubbed the stain with it.

Try Oxyclean on the stain. Make sure you follow the directions. I also have an OxyPod, which is Oxyclean in a small portable container. There are probably tons of solutions on the internet if that doesn't work. You could Google carpet stains.

I thought my little boy and I suffered from it a few months ago, but it could have been the Roto Virus. He was so weak from throwing up that his legs started to shake uncontrollably when I had him stand for a few seconds. He threw up everything for the first day and wouldn't eat anything and drank very little and had a fever the next day. I was really worried because he was so tired and his eyes seemed to roll back all the time because he was so tired and I'm sure energy-less. I did my best to give him Gatorade or Pedialite to keep him hydrated. Don't give him very much just because he thinks he's hungry. My little boy was probably hungry but he ended up throwing up right after eating second helpings no matter how small. I looked up food poisoning on webmd.com. That can tell you the difference between the flu and food poisoning.

Sorry about the puking business...yuck, I hope everything is better now! About the carpet stain...It depends on what it is (tomato based, milk, lime jell-o...) but I think that a baking soda paste might work. I've used it before on a light colored carpet and it worked. You just mix it together until the baking soda is pretty thick but still spreadable, kinda like cake mix consistency. work it into the carpet with a bristle-like brush (toothbrush), let it dry and vacuum it up. I'm not positive that it will work, but it's worth a try! Good Luck!

Hi Lisa,

I have 5 boys, 1 dog, 2 cats and I use Folex Stain Removal.
I have found it at Lowe's. I think it is super and I know messes. OF course, the more prominent ones took two/three times to get out but the stains did come out.

Good Luck,

eeewww...sorry about your being sick, that is not fun. As far as the carpet goes, yes, I think the baking soda can work well. What I have used before (dog barf!..don't ask...) is that stuff called "Awesome". You used to be able to get it at the dollar store. Works pretty good, and if you rinse really well, it doesn't come back up. My carpet cleaning guy said to always use plain water first, tho, because some soaps or detergents make it worse. I would do that, then use the Awesome.

As far as telling if you had food poisoning, it will usually hit you just like it did. And disapear when you have everything out of your system. (I got it twice) I only felt better after the only thing coming up was NOTHING. It lasted about 24 hours each time. Sometimes you get sick over and over until it is just gone. If it is really severe, check with a doctor, esp with kiddos. I had no fever or anything like that, just TERRIBLE stomache issues. But I also was told it depends on what you ingested. Mine was a reaction from something at a resturaunt they prepared. TWICE AT THE SAME PLACE! (uh no, I don't eat there any more...)
Long time ago...

Take care and hopefully you get that icky stain out!!:)

The best cleaner for carpet I have ever found is Resolve. You spray it on, let is soak, then scrub it out. I have cleaned carpet with Resolve that I thought was beyond hope. As far as the food poisoning goes, I used to work in a doctor's office, and the signs I learned were that it usually hits within 8 hours of eating whatever it was that made you sick, can be (but is not always) accompanied by a fever, and is usually associated with vomiting and diarrhea. It can last up to 2-3 days, depending on which strain it is. It is a bacteria. There are things that your doctor can prescribe, like phenergan pills or suppositories, to help with the nausea and vomiting, but mostly you just have to be careful to stay hydrated, especially for your little one. I'm sure you know the drill--popsicles, gatorade, FLAT sprite, even the new vitamin water is good because it had electrolytes in it. One tip--especially at the beginning, try small sips of ROOM TEMPERATURE liquids. One small sip, then wait 20 minutes. If that stays down, then another small sip, and so on. Good luck!!

There are several kinds of 'food poisoning.' The most common is actually a food-borne illness, usually a virus like roto, and can take up to a day to get sick. You can also pass this to family members through other contact (learned this the hard way). Often vomiting for day or two, and sometimes diarrhea a well. You could have eaten the same contaminated food.
The other is things like salmonella and botulsim, which often are more severe and require and require treatment by a doctor or ER. If you are still sick, you may want to call the doctor. Or if you are concerned. I'm not sure of any long lasting effects, but your doctor can tell you.

You can call 1-800-4-DUPONT. The recording will give you a list of things and you select the one pertaining to your stain. Also, there is a cleaner out there called "Carpet Magic" that works pretty good...not sure where to get it in your area (might be able to find online)

I use vinegar. I have been able to get out red wine, dried paint, pet accidents and other stains as well. I use a mixture of water and vinegar in a bowl. Take a scrub brush and work it into the stain, then use towels to dab it up. It helps with the smell and because it isnt a chemical it is safe for all in the house.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Food poisoning sucks! I have used vinegar to treat past episodes. Just drink a 1/4 of white vinegar. It will get it out of your system. For the carpet, try spot shot, the one in the spray can, not the bottle. I have 4 dogs and a 6 month old little girl. And that stuff works wonders!
Hope this helps.

Hi Lisa, Food poisening usually hits 3-4 hrs. after eating & depending on the level of bacteria in the food item dictates how sick. Meat & dairy has a "shelf life" of max 4 hrs. at room temp. (a buffet on the counter for a party, etc.). It must be refrigerated before that time or tossed. You won't "taste" anything, just the effects. Food poisening from restaraunts can be a number of things from cross contamination to under cooked & ill properly stored food. It's the quickness of the onset of stomach ache/cramps/gas after eating that is your indicator that it is food poisening & especially if someone else also has the same issues at the same time!! As for your carpet I love Spot Shot. Costco sells it in a 3 pack for only a bit more than one can sells for in the store. It's a blue can with an orange cap. Also awesome for laundry stains. It won't help with what has penetrated into the carpet pad & might resurface when the carpet is professionally cleaned but just pull out the Spot Shot & treat it again! Make sure you use a white towel or rag when you apply or you will transfer the dye of the cloth to your carpet. Good luck
