"Stacking" Motrin and Tylenol

When stacking Motrin and Tylenol, how much time must you wait in between before giving the next dose? For instance we gave our son Tylenol at 5:00, so if we want to give him Motrin, how many hours do we wait in between. I can't recall what his doctor has said and we have heard everything from 2 hours to 6 hours.

What can I do next?

I have always been told that you can give it within 15-20 minutes of one another just not at the same time. Hope this helps.

Hello P.,

Our doctor told us you an give Motrin and Tylenol every 4 hours. Motrin is an 8 hour medication so start with Motrin then in 4 hours give your son Tylenol. This has works well for fevers and teething with my daughter.

Best of luck with your new buddle of joy.

My pediatrician said that I can use both at the same time, you don't have to wait in between. They are completely different medications, so you can't overdose by using them both. My son is in terrible pain teething, so I give him tylenol and if that doesn't help within the hour I go ahead and give him motrin/ibuprofen.

Hi P.,
My daughter had Strep along with a sinus infection last week so I was piggy backing the Motrin with Tylenol. I was pretty sure I needed to wait two hours after giving the Motrin before administering the Tylenol but called the Pediatrician to verify and I was correct. Good Luck.

I was told by my doctor to give the motrin first. Wait two hours give the dose of tylenol. Wait four hours and give the next dose of motrin. My son has had a lot of ear infections every time he got teeth in and this is what the doctors have told me to do. I hope it works!

Hi P.,
Recently my daughter was running a 104.00 temp I took her to the ER and they gave her both tylenol and motrin at the same time for the first dose then they said to give the tylenol every 4 to 6hrs and the motrin every 6 to 8hrs or vice versa. But the first initial dose was done at the same time. Hope this helps.

A few months ago my son had a febrile seizure due to high fever, so "stacking" Motrin and Tylenol became something that I have become accustomed to doing. You can actually give them together. As long as you space the Tylenol out every 4 hours and the motrin every 6. I keep a piece of paper on the fridge so that I can chart every time that I give him a dose of either so that I know when he can either one. My son is 17 months old so dont worry about the ages...just go by his weight for dispensing the proper amount. Good Luck!

Generally a couple hours. Because inbuprofen is a 6 hour drug, and acetaminophen a 4 hour drug, I usually try to stick with three hour intervals, though. That way you don't risk overdosing the motrin, and a little less often on the tylenol isn't likely to do any harm, obviously. I've usually not done this for more than a couple doses, though. Usually by the time i piggyback a motrin on tylenol, the problem is solved entirely by the time the tylenol is due again.

I was told by our pediatrician to do it every 4 hours when stacking. With just Tylenol it's typically 4-6 and with Motrin alone it's typcially 8, that's why you can stack every 4 hours. At least, that's what they told us when my daughter had constant ear infections.

My doc told me every 4 hours. So if you gave him tylenol at 5 you can give him motrin at 9. Good luck I hope he is well soon.
