Spotting During Pregnancy - Pocatello,ID

So my sister is only 5 1/2 weeks pregnant and has been spotting now for 3 days. It's very light and brown in color which I know means old blood but she is getting worried. Today she even had some blood fall into the toilet and not just on the toilet paper when she wiped. I told her she should try and get in to be seen by her doc. We know if she looses this baby there is nothing doctors can do this early on but I told her just for piece of mind she can get her blood work done and her levels checked right? Her doc said they can't get her in today and that she shouldn't worry about the spotting. But what do you guys think? Should she get checked out or just wait until her first appointment which is on the 30th of this month?

What can I do next?

I had this happen in 2 of my pregnancies - at about the same point (5 1/2 to 6 weeks). In both cases, by doctor did an ultrasound and we saw that everything was just fine. It definitely brought peace of mind in both instances.

Have her call again. There is something that can be done. If her progesterone is low, it could cause a miscarriage. Her doctor can prescribe her progesterone. It's the only cause of a miscarriage that doctors can actually help with. I had spotting at five weeks (I'm currently seven weeks), and the doctor wanted me to come in right away. I had three appointments in two weeks to check the baby's growth and my hormones. Everything is fine, and I had piece of mind knowing I did what I could for my growing baby.

Since the blood is light and brown I would say that it is just implantation blood. So that's ok. I know it is hard not to worry because I've been through a miscarriage and in my next pregnancy I had this same spotting. She can definitely go to the doctor and get a vaginal ultrasound. But since she is not bleeding heavily then I really think it is implantation blood. And if she is having a miscarriage your levels do go down immediately! Hope all goes well

I would say that she can do whatever she needs to do to have peace of mind. That's totally fine! Hopefully everything is okay. The same thing happened to my sis in law. They did blood work and her hcg levels were low so they told her she was probably going to miscarry, but they decided to have her come back the next day for an ultrasound. The next day showed the baby and a strong heart beat. She didn't miscarry! Now her beautiful girl is 4 yrs old. So you never know. Best thing is to of course, let it take it's course, but there are always things you can do to help your reassurance along the way. :)

Its too early to be seen by ultrasound so an apointment isn't going to be definitive in anyway. Even if she miscarries her levels will not fall right away. Unfortunatly all she can do is wait and see if it stops. Poor thing, what a lot of stress.

I agree with Melissa G. They need to test her levels soon. My sister is in her 4th pregnancy. Her 1st and 3rd were miscarriages. With her 2nd and currently 3rd they found her progesterone levels were low. With the progesterone level being low she is on medicine she takes once a day until she is around 30 weeks. If she does have to take the meds for that make sure she knows to take it at night. With my sis's 1st time taking it it was a low dose but with her current pregnancy its a higher dose that makes her very dizzy. Spotty can mean a lot of things. I've lost 2 also and which only one I did spot just a little. With my 1st baby I spotted a couple days after sex.

Hi honey,

I'm gratified to see so many answers relating to progesterone levels. I did not ever personally have this issue with any of my pregnancies--that being said, I would undoubtedly rush straight out to the health food store and pick up some progesterone cream and use it. I was worried (needlessly it seemed) about miscarrying with my first couple of pregnancies, and I used the cream quite happily. A side note--very important one--progesterone cream can significantly easy the post partum depression issue--keep it on hand!

If your sister can get out to the store before she can get in to see a doctor, that is what I would do, followed by some tests to make sure everything is ok.

Best wishes and blessings

I would try to get in next week when she is 6 weeks...they should be able to do blood tests and an ultrasound at that point. Best of luck to her.

Hi--
When this happened to me I went to the emergency room (I was a little farther along) for an ultra-sound. It turned out I had what they called a missed miscarriage--the baby hadn't developed but I had enough hormones in my body that my body hadn't cleared the fetus yet. I miscarried a few days later. But in the three days of spotting before the hospital visit the anxiety was terrible. I say go to the doctor because knowing at least means you can deal with whatever is happening.
Good luck to your sister!

There are some US machines that can see the baby this early - mine did. If she is near a fertility clinic (there is one in Boise), those are usually better to do an ultrasound at this time in the pregnancy. For peace of mind, I would go in. I know plenty of women that have bled throughout the pregnancy, so it may be nothing, but the stress won't help the situation.

I had this happening in the beginning of my pregnancy, I actually thought I was having a period before I knew I was pregnant. I waited for my first US at 10 weeks and everything was fine. My doctor told me that early in the pregnancy it happens sometimes and it normal and fine. Hopefully this is the case for her, good Luck!

I had full periods the first month w/both of my babies. With the first one I had cramping & shooting pains too. I couldn't afford an ER visit or I'd have gone in. After talking to my sisters & a few friends, I found out that some women have spotting or full periods for a month or two while their bodies adjust or for the entire pregnancy (my unlucky MIL w/all 4 of her kids). On post, they didn't even bother seeing moms until they were a couple of months along-that was the case w/both of my babies, I was seen first at 10 weeks. If she's worried there's something wrong or she's having bad cramping & an increase in bleeding, she should go get checked out, just for her peace of mind. Otherwise, have her take it easy for a few days (as much as possible) & wait til her appt.
