Spotting - Genoa,IL
Been to 2 different doctors now. The second Doctor seems better, cause he wants to find out why. I have had an internal ultrasound as of yesterday (that was different!) and today I am spotting even more. I am only 7 weeks pregnant and VERY worried about losing this baby. Has this happened to anyone else? Should the doctor take me off of work? would love any advise.

I had this for my second child and everything was fine. I guess it can happen with certain pregnancies, but a larger amount of blood would definitely bring me in to the doctor's.

Hi C.,
The reality is at seven weeks there's not a lot they can do to change the course of things, which is why it can be so frustrating to see doctors when this is happening during the first trimester. In my case, spotting at seven weeks was not good news; but I have three friends who spotted, sometimes heavily, throughout their pregnancies to varying degrees, and all three of them carried to term and have beautiful, healthy children. The responses I'm reading here have it right - take care of yourself, and try to trust. I know it's hard.
Good luck,
R.

I had this and my girlfriend had this too. Hers were from tears in the placenta. They did heal, but she had to take it very easy adn they did tell her she was at a greater risk for a miscarriage. Also, she had to have her progesterone level checked and they ended up putting her on a supplement. Don't be afraid to be aggressive to ask for things like a pregesterone level blood test even if they don't think you need it, or another ultrasound. That's what insurance is for.

I miscarried with my last pregnancy and I had the same thing happen. I want you to know whatever happens, it will be ok and you will move on to hopefully have another healthy pregnancy afterwards if it doesn't work out. SOmetimes spotting is ok and the fetus grows to be a normal newborn. However, if something is wrong, no matter whether you rest and elevate yourself etc. the fetus dismissed itself if its not meant to be. If the fetus is fine then you will be ok even if you do light activity. Know also that miscarriage is very very common and most women have one or more. It does not put you at greater risk for anything if you have only one miscarriage. Also, it is the miraculous way of the body getting rid of a child that would heaven forbid be horrible unwell anyway. If your baby is well and things are truly fine then the bleeding in itself will NOT harm the baby since many women spot during pregnancy. However there is nothing they can do for you really this early on. Most miscarriages happen before the 15th week. I know its hard and nerve wrecking. Please hang in there and know that we are all sending you love and support during this time no matter what happens. Feel good and be well. Please let us know if you find out anything.

I had spotting with my first and third during the first trimester. With the first I was put on bed rest for two weeks. With the third they just had me stop lifting heavy objects for the rest of the first trimester (nothing heavier than a gallon of milk, which was somewhat difficult considering I had a two-year-old that had to be lifted in and out of his crib and carseat; we made good use of step stools!!). I also had to rest as much as possible, but bed rest was not necessary.
They don't know what caused the bleeding with the first one, which is probably what caused them to put me on bed rest. With the third they could see with the 8-week ultrasound that my placenta was starting to tear away from the uterine lining. Scary stuff, but it completely repaired itself by the 10-week ultrasound, and there was NO concern that it would happen again once it repaired itself.
I had 6-, 8-, and 10-week ultrasounds because I'd gone to a fertility specialist to get pregnant with my first, and they wanted to see us for the second and third even though those happened on our own. If you are concerned, I would request additional ultrasounds. You might have to pay for them without insurance, though. I would do it for piece of mind, but then I seem to need that kind of reassurance whereas you may be comfortable without. Do what's best for you!
I hope this helps, and I'll be thinking of you. I hope your pregnancy continues to go well and that the baby thrives. It's a scary time, but you will feel so much better when you reach your second trimester. Hang in there.

Dear C.,
How did the ultrasound go? Unfortunately, miscarriages are very common. I've had 4! Generally spotting is not a good sign however, I did spot with one of my babies and she turned out fine. If you are still bleeding I would get another ultrasound done. Also, keep your feet up as much as possible. Stay positive! A.

I had the same fears when I was pregnant with my second child- she was born in January. I had a lot of spotting with her and went to several doctors. Try to relax, it is normal to spot but if you have large amounts of spotting, enough where you are changing pads often then go back to the doctor. Try to take it easy, no lifting and laying down. Good luck and and congrats on the pregnancy.

Hello, I had the same thing happen at seven weeks. I started spotting very lightly and than started spotting heavily, the spotting lasted for two and a half weeks. My doctor told us to cancel our vacation plans just incase I miscarried. I was so worried and wanted to know why this was happening, but my doctor said it sometimes just happens. I am happy to say that everything turned out okay and I had a very healthy baby girl. I wish you the best of luck and hope this turns out to be nothing.

At seven weeks, there is very little they can do if you are going to miscarry, but they are getting farther ahead in what they can do, plus it is not uncommon to spot in the early months and have a healthy pregnancy, so don't panic! Just rest, relax, eat healthy as you can despite any nausea, get lots of folic acid and vitamin A in green and orange leafy vegetables and fruit. The veggies are better due to less risk of yeast and blood sugar problems... but all the natural foods are loaded with enzymes and properties that lower risk! Drink plenty of water and listen to relaxing spiritual music, and trust God's gift to you. I spotted on two of my pregnancies significantly, they are healthy, although one had jaundice and sugar problems and the other, ortho and eye problems, but the point is, they are all very unique and individual, and life uses the tools it needs to do the job!
PS If you can afford to take off work, don't hestitate, use the time to minister to yours and the baby and dad's needs. Build your plans for your style of home management and enjoy postive activity that is gentle on your body!
