My daughter has a splinter imbedded in her finger that we can't get out-- she just screams! Does anyone have any tricks or old wive's "cures" for getting it to surface? Your quick responses are appreciated!!

Thanks for all the advice-- the neosporin worked. It seems as though some moms weren't seeing the update part! She is splinter-free!

So What Happened?

Soaking it in a neosporin filled bandaid overnight worked! It broke the skin, and we were able to push it out the next evening! Thanks!

Maybe give her a sucker and put her in front of a movie to take her mind off of what you're doing...
OR... I just thought of this: give her some tweezers and let her play with them to see how it'll be, or to try and "help" you get the splinter out too.

Try to remove it when she is asleep. It worked when my drama queen was younger. I waited until she was in her deep sleep and bam, it worked. I decided to try this when she a baby and would not let me clip her nails. I di everything when was asleep....nail, splinters, old band aids, any bites etc... Now she is older, 6, and i can explain everything to her. Eventually the splinter will fester and come to the surface but you sometimes have to pop it. Another night time project! Good luck!

Get silica (silicea) from Whole Foods, Central Market, or Vitamin Shoppe. 30c potency. Dissolve three pellets in a half bottle of filtered water. Give her 1 tsp. in the morning, mid-day, afternoon, and evening. This should help work it up to the surface.

Put some ambisol (the stuff that numbs your gums) on it and then try and get it out with tweezers, it wont hurt as bad. We used this trick yesterday on a toe and it worked. Good luck.

I have used egg white to remove splinters for the past fifteen years. Place the finger in the egg white or apply it to the area. Let it dry. Reapply a couple of times. Do NOT wash off. The splinter becomes stiff and can be removed more easily.
The splinter does need to be near the surface of the skin. A few weeks ago, my daughter had a splinter and the first night, we applied antibiotic ointment, covered with a bandaid as the splinter was not real close to the surface..we used the egg white the next day and it came right out.
This has worked well for me. I have three daughters and have used it for them, their friends, and on my other family members. You should see the relief on their faces when it comes right out. Especially the little ones who have had the experience of someone trying to dig one out!
Give it a try. I hope it works as well for you as it has for me!

I have heard of putting duck tape (grey tape) over it & leave it on overnight. By morning the adhesive is supposed to bring it to the surface. I have never tried, but I am sure it is worth a shot!

If any part of the splinter is sticking out of the skin you can put some duck tape or other strong tape on it and pull it off. It usually pulls the splinter out and is much less scary than tweezers or a needle. If none of the splinter is showing, soak her hand in some warm water for a while or let her take a long hot bath, sometimes the hot water will open up the pores allowing the splinter to come out some.

Have your daughter soak in the bathtub a looooooong time. Have her play in the tub until the skin on her fingers looks like prunes.

Then, take your nail clippers and simply clip the pruned skin off around the splinter area. Then just brush the splinter away. It won't hurt because the outer layer of skin is pulled away from the nerve endings. I've been doing this for years w/ my little ones when they get splinters.

I just put Neosporin and a Band-Aid, and it comes out on it's own. I've done this a few times, and it's worked. I don't know if I have weird skin, though. lol

I have a couple of tricks: put a dab of elmer's glue on it-once it dries, peel the glue and splinter off (must know which direction the splinter went it or it won't work). Or there is an ointment that is called (I know I didn't spell it right- but your pharmacist will know it) etheoil. It is like black tar. You only need a little dab, put a bandaid on it for one day. It will take the swelling down and the splinter will just be gone. I use this stuff for this and ingrown nails. My mom has sworn by it for years- it works!
good luck!

If it has any infection at all, even one you can't see yet, you can try soaking it in warm saltwater. This draws out the infection and the splinter with it. It's worked for me before, but I've never tried it on a wiggly kid who might not want to sit and soak.

If you can see any of the splinter sticking out at all, try putting some good tape over it and pulling out. It worked for us one time. Good Luck! B. - Arlington, TX

Hi H.D.-

On thing I learned from my mom was to use duct tape or some other really sticky tape. Normally, If i can't get it out by "digging" it out or pulling it with tweezers, I find duct tape to be the best. It doesn't tear the skin and it somehow sucks the splinter out. Not sure how it works, but it works great! Good luck!

I always waited until my kids were asleep. Splinters aren't usually painful. Kids just get worked up. After she is good and asleep grab your tweezers and a straight pin. If you can't grab the splinter just use the pin break the almost see through skin just covering the splinter. If you do it right she won't feel a thing and it won't even bleed. It's how my mom got splinters out of my fingers many times.
