Splinter in Child's Finger

My 3 year old got a very small splinter in one of her fingers a couple days ago. The area around the splinter is red and looks infected, but I can't get her to stay still long enough to try to remove it - she's so scared that it's going to hurt that she wouldn't stop crying. Any easy way to get splinter out? Is it problem if the splinter never comes out, does the body eventually heal around it?

This might sound nuts, but it's always worked. Have her suck on it or soak it in warm water. Then she can use her teeth to work it out. Clean thoroughly afterwards.

generally the body with expel it, and from the sound of it, its started. The puss will eventually bring the splinter to the surface where you can do a tweezer and pick it out. I have had my husband hold my kids when they get them in their feet from the deck. If they are close enough to the surface, I will use a small pin and NOT poke them, but coax them with a back to front motion with the side of the pin. Then when its close enough I will grab it with a tweezer. If its not bothering them, and too deep I let it get to the point its starting to fester, and then put a hot compress on it, it will bring the puss to the top and then I use the flat of my nail and press from the back to front to try to expose a portion of it, then grab it with a tweezer. The kids will squirm a bit, as its somewhat uncomfortable, but we re-assure and have them help, I always keep a cute character band aid or sticker around for them to hold or look at. Even if the wound isnt bad enough I still put a band aid on for effect. It helps alleviate the fear of getting the splinter out.
Is it bad to leave them in? well as long as the splinter is not the size of a stake, it will be fine. Just keep an eye on it, clean it regularly, and the body will do the rest of the work. Infected would look different than just a little puss pocket surrounding it. If its mega infected of course take her in to the doc before blood poisoning occurs.

I just saw a segment on Dr. Oz about natural cures and they said a ripe banana peel - go to his site for details

My daugther does the same.
You can use a needle and tweezers to get it out. While she's sleeping.
It always works for me. I do a little slit on top of the splinter with the needle and pull it out with the tweezers.

Dab some Bactine on it. It is an antiseptic and numbing agent.

This works for us: Get some really good tape, place it over the splinter, rub it on (being careful not to push the splinter down further), then rip the tape off (ripping in the direction that the splinter can come out). Similar to waxing - LOL!

We always use glue or duct tape. They usually come right out.

I second the glue or duct tape. Maybe do it on a non-splinter finger to show her how it doesn't hurt (heck, we used to smear glue on our fingers just to peel it off!) first?

if its really tiny the body should push it out but if its infected thats a whole new issue. I'd do what the person below said and if that doesnt work call the local dr I'm sure they have ways of making kids let you remove them if its infected

I'm sorry for her pain. I do a lot of natural stuff and had success with a deep splinter in my daughter's foot. You can put honey on it (raw honey is always best) and cover with a bandage. Best at night before sleep. Also, a bit of raw bacon can be used instead, under a bandage or gauze/tape. They both draw out the splinter naturally. For infection you might give extra vitamin c and some garlic, if you can get some in her! They will go a long way to fighting off infection b/c they boost the immune system. Good luck! **Oh, it could take a couple days or so. If it's not infected badly and you are amping up the immune building stuff, I wouldn't worry too much.

Also, if you cover the area with white glue and let it dry, when you peel the glue off, the splinter comes with it! Ive done this with nettles and cactus stickers too.

Soak it...them try using duct tape to pull it out. Worked for us when my son had a splinter in his foot and wouldn't let us get NEAR it. Good luck.
