Spitting Out Food

My daughter is 13 months old, still eats pretty much only baby food, and I've noticed that lately, she will be eating just fine, and all of the sudden decides that she doesn't want whatever she's eating, and starts spitting it out. She's not really eating solids - she spits those, too - and I'm getting frustrated at the amount of laundry I'm having to do! Any advice from anyone will be appreciated!

I have tried feeding her solid foods - she'll eat cheerios, goldfish crackers, graham crackers, and anything solid. She refuses to eat any cooked vegetables, meat, mashed potatoes, or anything else that isn't sweet or crunchy.

What can I do next?

Try dipping whatever you're feeding her in applesauce, it works for us. Also, I don't get why you're not feeding her solids...it's way past time.

I run a family daycare and I start introducing solids around 10 months. Start with cherrios or small pieces of cereal. They need to start using their pinchers to pick up food it will strengthen their muscles in their hands.

Cut up pieces of cheese,Scrammble eggs, toast Pancakes, Waffles etc. Make sure they are small pieces throw them on thier high chair tray and let them at it. Try putting a small piece in the side of her cheek and let her get a taste. She should be eating solids now.. Get canned peas, carrots, corn, green beans. They are soft and little ones can handle them.

I hope this helps good luck with the solids. She probably is tired of the baby food and just needs time to get used to the table food.

R. - Have you tried bibs? They now have pull over bibs that are pretty long and mostly will catch the food. Also, is she feeding herself? If she is not then watch her mouth and when it starts coming back out, put the spoon there and scoop it up. I am a mother of two children.

Hi R.,
My daughter is the messiest eater. I used to strip her down to her diaper at meal times. If we were out in public I used one of those shirt bibs. Try letting her pick out what food she wants, give her a choice of 2 things. "do you want carrots or peas?". Also a great start to solids that most children LOVE is mashed taters, try those with a lil ranch mixed in for extra flavor. Also try other solids that are easy like that, nanners, mashed cooked carrots, shredded chicken and so on... hope this helps

I also have a daughter close to yours in age. It is normal for her to do that. She is learning to express herself through the food, learning texture etc. She will also choose that she doesn't want to eat at all. My 15month still has days where she may choose to eat breakfast and others where she may not. Same goes for lunch and dinner. We buy her the Gerber meat sticks and some of thos mashed sweet potatoes etc. I get frustrated sometimes when she chooses not to eat them after I've heated them up etc. But, I guess it goes with the territory. I'm glad she has quit spitting things out tough- now she just spreds it all over her tray, throws it to the dog, or will just shake her head no.
We have recently stopped trying to make her eat. ( we used to offer multiple choices until she would eat. It got a bit pricey) Now she knows that she gets to wait until her next meal when she chooses not to eat what we fix her.

Hope this helps:)

Thanks,
A.

Hi R.,
If she is spitting out her food after eating for alittle while maybe she is bord and needs alittle variety like some of her 3rd foods and some finger foods (puffs, cheerios, meat...) or maybe she is just full (their little bellies are very small and don't hold very much). I would just keep trying the finger foods to me it sounds like she is spitting it out because she is trying to learn what to do with her mouth. It does take alittle while to get control with her tongue. Just keep giving her the solids, it is definity time. She will eventually get the hang of it. If you don't get her to eat veggies or meats now she will grow up to be a picky eater and it will be that much harder on you to get her to have a healthy lifestyle. Remember she is starting to get her taste buds and of course sweets always taste better.I hope I helped and good luck to you. Oh, Babies R Us has bibs with big pockets in the front so it will save you on laundry and the clean up on the floor.

Hi R.,
I would definatly start feeding her solid food. She may be spitting out her food because she doesn't want baby food anymore. Right around 10 months my now one year old started doing that. I started him on the Gerber Graduate foods or foods like them and he loved it. I think that he wanted to chew. He loved those Gerber Puffs. He also loves Cheerios. Hope this helped. By the way as I was writing this I got a phone call from my brother-in-law and found out I have a new niece that they named R..

She may be tired of the texture of babyfood. My son all out decided that he wasn't eating anything that even resembled baby food at one point, I still have a hard time with him and applesauce sometimes now. If you need help figuring out what she can move up to, Gerber's site has info on it about feeding toddlers and how to move them up onto adult foods. My son also went through a stage where he would chew and suck all the juice out of things and then spit out the rest. We just showed him how to put it back on his plate and to not make a mes and that stage left as fast as it came.
Good Luck!

I agree with the previous comment. Start her on solids and finger foods. She'll probably love it!! I even started giving my son coursely blended up table food well before he was one.

About the spitting food out. That isn't acceptable. By whatever means you choose, let her know that it isn't acceptable. Tap her lips with your finger, tell her no, no. Whatever works. That isn't good table manners.

Good luck in your feeding adventures.

I noticed my son did that when he was ready for food with a bit more firmness to it. I got this feeling that he wasn't even doing it on purpose, which might not seem to make sense. But, it was like he was trying to chew his baby food, so it ended up spit out. I think she just needs to have something to chew. My son loved those Gerber Graduate items. The vanilla cereal squares are really good. He also liked canned fruits and veggies, and macaroni and cheese that I put in the food processor to make it finer. Small cheese cubes aren't bad either. But they might be a bit risky until she's used to chewing.
