My 4 year old son has just started a habit that is driving us crazy. For the past 3 weeks or so he has started spitting. He isn't spitting in the tobacco chewing way but more like a "raspberry". As he runs through the room he's going "brrrrr" (sort of ) with his mouth and lips but ends up spitting too. He's really into trucks, trains, etc. so I've wondered if he's trying to make an engine type noise (???). It's annoying because as he runs past us we do end up getting spit on -- he especially drives his older sister crazy. Has anyone else had a weird habit like this crop up? One other thing, if he's watching a movie where there's a "bad guy" or something that scares him he'll spit on the TV screen so I think sometimes he's doing it on purpose but other times it seems like just a weird habit he's gotten into.

What can I do next?

Re: the spitting. You could try my tack: when the spitting happens and the following ick that coates his face, get a COLD damp washcloth and mop that little mouth. Then hand him a damp cloth and walk him through cleaning off anything he may have spat on. Kids get tired of that routine, especially if you can be persistant and consistant with the firm admonition that "Spitting is a messy, dirty thing that needs to stop." I know he's a boy and dirty is cool, but it might work.

For the TV thing, I would heavily restrict what he watches. Nothing of what sister is able to watch, and certainly nothing that might frighten him. It's hard, especially with a protesting adolescent, but it can be done. If he has a favourite DVD, consider getting a cheap DVD player and hooking it up to the stereo--that way he can listen to things like a radio program without the frightening or startling imagery. Four is still a bit too young to grasp reality from fantasy.

Best of success!

Well, ask him. Sit down with him, when you are able to have one on one, and ask him in a quiet, easy going manner. "Why do you make that noise? What are you doing? Are you being silly? Are you angry?" I have found that being honest and open works wonders. Let him know that you do not find it acceptable nor pleasant.
Then, help him figure out something else he can do instead.
Hope that helps!
