Speech Tutor

What is the best place to go to get my son help with speech and pronunciation? Please don't say the school system (I tried, they were no help). I need perhaps, a independant company or agency.

What can I do next?

Hi D.... You may want to look at the Como Pediatric Communication Center in Troy. And/or The Center for Human Development in Berkeley. I don't know what the issues are with your son, and maybe both of these are more than you're looking for... but I bet they would be able to help you find the right thing. Both of them are expensive... and netiher of them will participate with insurance, so you have to go through all the out of network paperwork.
Good luck...

I also am going thru the school system-Lakeshore district Rodgers Elem, and so far am satisfied with the speech path there. My son is 3 and in a class with 2 other kids his age. However, and depending on your ins and coverage, I also take him to the Beaumont Pedicatric Speech Center and they are wonderful. It is one on one with the same speech path. He goes there once a week and we are on the waiting list for another day, which is why I am still taking advantage of the school district. Luckily my ins covers 60 visits a year, otherwise it is about $300 for the eval and $78 for each 1/2 session. It is def worth looking into your coverage. They also videotape the sessions for you and talk with you after each session and give you sheets and tips to help your child at home and what to work on each week. Beaumont's main # is ###-###-####.

Hi D. -

My son is working with an Occupational Therapist at Dearborn Speech & Sensory for handwriting. They also provide support with children who have speech and other needs. They are great, but be sure to check your insurance for OT coverage...at $100+ an hour, it can be costly.

Hi,

My son was evaluated at Beaumont Hospital's speech/language dept and then began one-on-on therapy, twice a week there. Our insurance did not cover this BUT you can apply for a grant from the Lions Club (the speech dept will give you all the paperwork). I cannot say enough good things about the program at Beaumont. His therapist was excellent and very helpful in showing us how to help him at home. At first they predicted he would be in speech therapy for a year but he was done after 5 months. I know each child is different and it depends on their diagnosis, but it is an outstanding program. BTW, I also began with the school system and was NOT impressed.
