Speech Problems and Testing?

I'm assuming you're in AISD since the teacher recommended Kooken. My son currently attends the autistic program at Kooken and I have nothing but awesome things to say about the school and faculty.

I'm not sure if calling Kooken would be the best route to go, though. It seems as though there is a process the teacher needs to follow. I would talk more with the teacher about what the process is to have her evaluated and if she doesn't know, then go to an administrator or counselor.

There's no harm in having her evaluated and if it turns out she needs therapy, then be thankful you have the opportunity to get it early!

Cook Childrens also has a great speech department, but of course, this would cost!

I knew a child that needed speach therapy badly and going really helped him. Maybe the teacher noticed something else? Did dhe give you a clear reason why? I suppose I would take your daughter to find out, and they can give you maybe little word activity games to help her develop her speech at home. It doesn't sound like she needs extensive therapy, maybe just go once to check it out and see what her needs are.

If your insurance covers speech therapy, you can get a referral from your pediatrician. Otherwise, I would contact student services in your school district and request her be tested.

Kooken is a public school in Arlington. It's been turned into a pre-k school and about half of the classes have some sort of special ed class. I've subbed there. I'm not sure what type of services they offer for speech therapy, but I would expect that they would be decent services. Not fabulous. If you want great, you're going to want to take your child to a specialist.
