Speech Delay Summer Programs
Anyone have information on summer programs for kiddos with speech delays in the DFW area? Cost and location are factors but the most important thing is for us to find something that will be really effective.

North Texas University has a strong Speech Pathology Department and they have speech therapists who see patients. I think they have an option to pay fees on a sliding scale depending on income.

One of the summer activities listed on Burb Mom is a program called "Under the Umbrella" - here is the list: http://burbmom.net/summer-activities-for-kids-in-collin-c...

Hi K.,
I don't know where you live, but I am the Director of a preschool in the Lewisville, Flower Mound, Highland Village area....it is called Reading Friends. We have a summer camp for 2 year olds. The curriculum isn't specifically for speech delays, but includes lots of language, vocabulary, singing, etc. Most of what we do with the children is rooted in therapy because it works for all children....not just those with delays/differences :-)
If you would like to learn more, please contact me directly.
Thanks,
M.

Hi K.,
I also have twins, now 4, with speech delays. Have you called ECI (Early childhood intervention)? They will come out an evaluate them and then they will send speech therapists out to your home/daycare for their sessions. ECI is only during the school year though, but I wanted to at least let you know about it. ECI deals with children until they are 3 and then (if the therapy is still needed) they will transition them to the preschool program. Also my guys have been going to speech therapy at Our Childrens house at Baylor in Grapevine. They've been going for almost two years and we have seen a ton of improvement (And luckily we only pay a small copay).

Have you contacted your school district. We are in the LISD area and they tested my daughter and decided she did need speech therapy. The school district gives it to her twice a week for free. It is only during the school year, so I do not know about a summer program but I can tell you this, she is now 4 and has been doing this for 2 years and it has made a world of a difference. Also, if you get them in with the school district and if therapy is still needed once they start kindergarten it will continue. They will just pull them from class and do it during the day.

My son was admitted to ECI (Early Childhood Intervention) program at 2 1/2. I think they call it Ready Start now. It is funded primarily through the state. If your insurance won't pay for it, it can be free for up to 6 month. (If I am remembering correctly) They come to your house for a 30-45 minute session. Mine were 2 times per month. There's not a ton that can be accomplished during that time, but I learned a lot to work with my son on throughout the week. The BEST part of this program was they helped me get my son in the PPCD program. This is the preschool program in your school district. If admitted, they start at 3. Each school district is a little different. My son goe 8-11 Mon-Fri through the school year. It is a WONDERFUL program. Last May, when tested, he did not use but a handful of nouns. 6 months later, we have conversations in complete sentences. His vocabulary is wonderful. He struggles still some with enunciation. Feel free to email me for more information. A.

there are early intervention programs that include speech in the school systems for children 0-3 years of age. I don't believe there is a charge for them, but you'll probably need a physician's order for speech therapy. Check with your pedi and the local school system. Good luck!

I would contact ECI now if you have don't already have them enrolled. I know that UNT has preschool speech camps in the summer. Your twins could be eligible for services through your public school at 3.
