My family & I have just moved to the keller area from oklahoma. Our son is one & a half & is special needs. I am looking for any information on everything! From therapist to playgroups, we are hooked up with E.C.I. but I am not happy with them. I would love to be in a playgroup for kids with special needs & their siblings or even start one. If anyone has any info or is experiencing the same problems I would love to talk!

What can I do next?

I wasnt that thrilled w/ ECI either. We got to Cooks Childrens outpatient therapy now and its great. They are wonderful there. I will tell your after batteling w/ the ISD my child is now in that it is hard even if your child has special needs to get them into the right programs. I have a former 24 week preemie that has Sensory Problems and Speech delays. She also id diagnosed w/ Mild CP and PDD (a form of atusium) and that wasnt enough to get her into the PPCD program. Medical diagnosis mean nothing to the school dist. You have to be tested and be enough behind enough educationally to quailify. A physcologist can evualate for Atusim and if they think they may have it that can get you in. My daughter had a speech imparment bad enough to get in and also they think she does have the PDD that I told them the doc diagnosed her with. I had her tested at age 3 and she didnt qualify and now I have been batteling the school snice Dec and she just started last week in the PPCD program. Just be patient when you get to this stage b/c it will be really drawn out and I think all the school dist's are about the same with this from what I have heard. Its really sad b/c there are so many kiddos that need these services and are not getting them which then puts them more behind and its the schoold dist's fault if that happens. Good luck with your journey.

K.,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Keller was probably not the best place for you to move w/ a special needs kiddo. I am currently heading up a growing number of parents who are fighting to get their kids educated by KISD. Many can't even get their child's disabilities recognized by KISD- even w/ a mountain of evidence! And a number of in or moving towards lawsuits. The greastest number of these kids have diabetes & autism, but there's a good variety of "other" in there, too. It's very sad & very frustrating.

My daughter is 16 months and is about to start going to "The Little Gym" she just had a birth mark removed from her leg and does suffer from Movement Tics. I thought a Gym would be good for her. The owner told me that it is an ideal place for children with Special Needs that she has several in her Gym.

I am not sure what your child has but it might be an idea for you.

Hi K.,

Welcome to our area! I've heard great things about Northwood Church and their special needs program one Sunday a month. I'm not sure of the name but I know its located at North Tarrant Parkway @ Rufe Snow.

We've just moved here from OK about a year ago. What town did you move from?

Hi K.,
I live here in the Keller area also and have two children, a 3 year old and a 16 month old. My youngest son is special needs so know what you're going through, especially being in a new area. We moved here last year. We are also with ECI and have had good experiences, but I guess we got lucky!
I should tell you about Northwood Church here in Keller. Twice a month they have a program called REVIVE which is like a baby sitting program for kids with special needs and their siblings. You don't have to go to that church or even go to church at all to be able to attend. If you go to their website and search the REVIVE program, you'll find out more info.
I hope that helps. As for playgroups, I haven't heard of anything, but have never actually looked very hard.
