Special Gift for Husband

My husband's dream has always been to be a police officer. He is currently in the state police academy and has 11 weeks to go before graduation. I want to get him something really special for a graduation gift to tell him how proud of him I am. He graduates on Dec 19th and his brithday is Dec 12, with X-mas the next week I was thinking of getting him something big as a combination gift. Trouble is I'm clueless on what to get him. He has a nice watch already, TV, stereo, all the electronic stuff. If you have any ideas please send them my way! Thanks ladies!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

I really want to thank everyone who responded. I had no idea that St Michael was the patron saint for police officers and will definitely be getting him some type of charm or pendant. Thank ladies.

Good Luck

I would also get him jewelry. Either a necklace with a mini gold badge charm with his badge number on it (you can have them made at Redford Jewelry and Coin on Six Mile in Redford, or probably anywhere for that matter)or the Saint Michael charm on a necklace. Something he can wear anywhere and all the time. For the badge charm you need to know what the MSP badges look like because I think they order them in that exact badge and put his number on it.

You could consider giving him something that would give him some time to himself - we ladies often like the spa. Men seem to like "events." I would get my husband a nice suite at his favorite sporting event so he and his buddies could go and enjoy, or a weekend off where he could go to Vegas or skiing or wherever. Good luck!

Hi C.,
Have you thought of something more sentimental? I am not sure of your religion or beliefs, but how about a gold or silver medal of a patron saint? I believe that it is Saint Michael who is the patron saint of police officers. My brother is a police officer, and I know others who wear these. You could have it blessed at a church after purchasing it. Most jewelry stores carry them.
Good luck and congratulations on the new baby!

The most creative gift I ever gave my husband was a replica of the sword Mel Gibson's character, William Wallace, used in Braveheart. It's my husband's favorite movie and I tracked down the company that did the props for the movie. Many companies that supply to the movie industry sell replica prop items to the general public.

The sword is full size and weight and I paired it with a framed Braveheart movie poster. My husband always loved this particular movie poster because the quote on it says "Every man dies. Not every man truly lives." He lives his life that way and always connected with the spirit of William Wallace.

If your husband has a movie he really connects with, give this some thought. My husband was truly blown away. The poster and sword adorn the walls of our entertainment area and he enjoys seeing them everyday. That quote gives him a great dose of inspiration daily.

If your husband doesn't really have a favorite movie, I was also thinking you could get a significant prop/poster from a great cop flick. Maybe one of his favorite actors has played a cop at some point. Anything "Dirty Harry" would appeal to my husband.

I know this is a little out there in terms of a suggestion, but, given the reason for the gift, I think something truly unique would be very meaningful to him.

Good luck! L.

How about a flight in a hot air balloon or a day learning to fly a helicopter or a race car or doing a parachute jump..... There are sites on the internet for stuff like that - a once in a lifetime thing for a life changing event!

I don't really have a gift suggestion (although I think the poster below had a great idea with you buying tickets for he and his buddies to a sporting event - if he's into that kind of thing) but I did want to say that a nice "gift" would be for you to read the book called "I Love A Cop: What Police Families Need to Know" by Ellen Kirschman. My husband has been a police officer for almost 10 years now and I read this soon after he started (we were only dating at the time - now we're married). I also got copies as gifts for his mother and sister. It gives you a really good look into their psyche and is incredibly helpful for families and loved ones of police officers. My husband was so happy that I read it. Here is a review from Amazon.com to give you better insight into the book: "This book is as necessary for the overall survival of our law enforcement officers as their vests, weapons, and officer safety tactics. The realities of the job have changed in the post-9/11 world, and the revised edition arrives just in time. Dr. Kirschman provides an in-depth look at the daily challenges facing the law enforcement officer and family, and offers specific strategies for overcoming the pitfalls that potentially take such a heavy toll. This book should be issued to every recruit entering the profession."
Congrats to your husband for making such a huge jump!!! It's a tough but incredibly rewarding profession.

My husband always wanted a Weber grill, but the gas ones were way out of our budget. Instead he would buy himself a cheap off-brand grill, and he'd have to replace it every three years or so (we're year-round grillers). Weber makes these "portable" grills that are HUGE and fit into a stand, so it looks like a regular grill. It's so much nicer than any of the other grills he's had. He was thrilled, and he gets compliments on it all the time. Of course, if your husband isn't into grilling, this idea would be a total waste of money :)
