Soy - Blue Springs,MO

Has anyone heard of any bad things about soy formula? My baby was on the Enfamil Gentlease, but after a couple weeks of being on that he started having very runny stools and diarrea. I thought I would try a couple cans of soy because when I was a baby I had a milk allergy and had to be put on soy milk. I'm on my second can with him and he seems to be doing well and his stools now seem normal (pasty) but lighter in color. Should I go back to the Gentlease to see what happens so that I know if the problem was a milk allergy? Or just stay on soy? And I heard that there is a bad side to soy milk. ? Does it have all the nutrients as regular formula?

What can I do next?

I've been battling constipation with my newborn. I just switched him to soy yesterday morning, and already seeing results! So far, I'd say I'm having good luck with the soy. Before this I was feeding him Enfamil Lipil. The nurse said that sometimes the iron in that is just too much for a newborn.

I put my daughter on soy because she was spitting everything else up. She would almost puke at every burp. She never had on clean clothes (me either). I decided I would try it, then I talked to her doctor after she started keeping it down. He said there is nothing wrong with it, it just tastes a little sweeter to them. He said it actually tastes better than regular formula. She held it down better than Neutromigen formula and supposedly it is already digested. Weird, but that is all I was told. He said if I wanted to change her and could see a difference, then by all means change, so I did. She didn't get "fat' off of it or anything else. I have heard good things about goats milk too, but babies get really chunky. lol Just follow your heart and if she is gaining weight then I wouldn't see a problem.

These are questions you should be asking your baby's pediatrician. He/she will better understand your child's dietary needs. You should read this article on soy based formulas: http://pediatrics.about.com/od/weeklyquestion/a/05_soy_fo...

It really should be discussed with your pediatrician before you switch formulas.

both my girls had problems with regular formula, my oldest was lactose intolerant and i tried the soy stuff but she wouldn't drink it, she would spit it back up immediatly after drinking it, then i tried the lactose free formula...back then they didn't have the A.R. or Gentlease stuff. my youngest has a milk allergy and i put her on nutramigen...the most expensive kind, but now i have the most happiest baby. no more diarrhea or gas or fussiness. they do say that soy products have more estrogen in them and that it can sometimes contribute to premature onsets of puberty...i remember reading that somewhere in some nursing journal. but then again, i'm sure there are lots of babies on soy and i haven't seen any of the boys running around with little boobies. if you are happy with the soy and he's happy, stay on it. don't switch up the formula to much cause then you'll get an unhappy baby. you are the mom, you know what's best. if you have any doubts, ask the doc. good luck. if you need anything else, just ask.
