Sore Throat

About 2 1/2 weeks ago I had cold...cough, sore throat, stuffy nose. I recovered from that pretty quickly, but since I have had a terribly sore throat. It's much worse in the mornings and in the evenings (before I ever go to bed). It's not a scratchy kind of sore, but like a lump stuck there. Crazy thing is, it may move from the left to right side daily!!! From looking at my throat-as best I can-, I don't see that there's white patches, that it's red or evn swollen. It's kind of started worrying me a little as I used to smoke for years pretty heavy...but have quit! I have not made the time to go have it checked yet...anyone experience this?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for your advise and suggestions! I did take the time to go to the Dr. I was tested for strep and mono and both were negative (which is somewhat of a relief). She did find a little swelling and redness and gave me 2 shots and antiobiotics. By the end of the day, I was already feeling better and for the first time in a couple of weeks, I didn't wake the next morning feeling like I had a golf ball stuck in my throat. I honestly didn't think this was something serious, but once that scary thought climbs into your mind, sometimes it is hard to get rid of it. You all did help me realize that it was important enought to check out. Thank you!

The only thing I can relate to on that is ACID REFLUX - feels like a foreign object and yes it has that moving around quality. I had the same thing about a year ago. Same times of day too.

My grandmother told me to use warm/hot water and salt and mix together and gargle about 3 times and it should start feeling better. I hate sore throats, i keep a cough drop in until it is completely gone if not go to doc, hang in there!

It could just be allergies. I never had allergies until I was pregnant, and during my pregnancy and even now (my baby is about 4 months old) I have had them like you wouldn't believe.

I am prone to bronchitis, so when I was pregnant, they didn't take any chances and gave me antibiotics three times...but it took forever to get over. Turns out, I am having the same problems now and it's just allergies.

I always thought everyone was crazy for complaining so much about allergies, but now I understand. I have been waking up w/a sore throat every morning, sneezing, and coughing up stuff.

If it continues, go to the doctor. But first, try some otc allergy medicine and see if that works. Hot tea w/lemon and honey and gargling w/warm salt water help me.

Hope it gets better.

I suspect you have a lot of chemtrails in your area. Sure, go to the doctor, but first look up to see if there are too many planes leaving very long trails that don't dissipate. A simple throat soother is honey and good apple vinegar, a tablespoon of each in a cup of hot water. And Google "stop chemtrails." My brother's name will show up. --M. Croft

You should go to the doctor with your throat problem. Dr. Dishman is a wonderful doctor in Morgan City. She is an internist, but we go to her for everything. I see that you have two young children, do this for them, if not for yourself. You need to be around to raise your kids, right?

i realize this post was made in 2008 but i am having a similar experience now in 2011. I actually felt whatever move from the left to right. it felt like something slipping to the other side. and then that side was sore. for a bit i felt like i had something stuck in the right side. (after it first moved from left to right) then tonight the left side stopped being sore and now it is back to the left. and I feel small pain in my deep ear canal. it is weird. I smoke. trying for 2 years to quit. not a heavy smoker. only in my early years. I have been diagnosed with allergies and usually if i take a claritin i feel better. have not done that yet this time. this moving sore throat is a new feeling. scared. no insurance so i have to limit doc visits...guess i will take my prescribed allergy med. loratadine or whatever it is called.

Hi A.,
You just may be having some sinus drainage during the night that is irritating your throat. This happens to me on occasion. I recommend taking 1 Zyrtec 10mg tablet at night before going to bed. It will help dry up that drainage.

It is probably not anything too serious, especially if it is not on one side only, but you should go and have a strep screen. Has anyone else in the home been sick recently? Allergies or post nasal drip may be to blame, also.

Whatever it turns out to be, you will get faster relief by going to the doctor right away.

My step-father had a sore throat from what he thought was a simple cold, but when the other symptoms went away, the sore throat did not. He had also been a smoker for many years.

I am not trying to scare you, but want you to realize that not everything has a simple little home remedy. My stepfather didn't go to the doctor for several months, and by then, his throat cancer had spread. He fought it for 2 years, finally ending up with a tracheostomy which my mother and I and others, had to suction out several times a day just to allow him to breathe. He was on a morphine pump that did little more than let him breathe throught the pain, since the morphine didn't really help that much. He was in such extreme pain all of the time, and the worst part is that he couldn't talk for the last several months.

Please just go see your doctor, and if he or she can't come up with an actual diagnosis, ask for a referral to a specialist, or, if your insurance doesn't require referrals, make an appointment yourself with an ear, nose and throat doctor.

Chances are great that it is something simple, but not everyone is that lucky. I hope you ARE that lucky!

Hmm, worse in the mornings and evenings...that's when you're home from work. Have you or your husband done anything around the house, like any remodeling projects? Is there something going on in the neighborhood like new construction?

We recently tore out our carpet and my husband did an acid stain with multiple layers of sealants. We left the windows open for a couple of days and thought it had all aired out, then one night it was chilly, and we closed the windows. I felt like I was sick within hours. It felt absolutely like your symptoms, and lasted till a couple of days after we cleared out the fumes, though felt better temporarily whenever I was out of the house.

Hope this helps!

I had something very similar back in March - cold for a few days, but the sore throat continued after the sniffles and such were long gone. It hurt so much, especially at night and I was hoarse. Every time I swallowed it felt like there was a huge marble in my throat. My OB (I'm very pg) told me it was probably allergies, but I finally went to my FP who did a strep test and cultures. It wasn't strep, but it was a bacterial infection. I felt completely better within 48 hours of starting the antibiotics. Go get it checked out!

It could be thrash which will only go away with an antibiotic and is contagious. You might want to go to the doctor or at least a walk in clinic.
