My daughter is almost 7 weeks old, I've been breast-feeding since day one. Just in the last couple of days, my nipples have become incredibly sore. One of tem has blister on the tip of it. What's causing it and how do I fix it?

What can I do next?

I used a ointment called lansinoh. It heals things FAST. I used it for probably the first few months, then i didn't really need it anymore. I think it is the bast breast healer out there. A tube will last forever.

CONGRATULATIONS! Wow I know what that is like. Been there and done that twice myself. It is so common because babies are learning how to suck. But don't worry soon it will be all over and your baby will have it down packed. I would recommend seeing a lactation consultant. I can refer you to someone if you would like. THey are great and specialize in this field. ALso if they are too sore it would be a good idea to see your doctor. WIth the birth of my daughter not too long ago, I was so sore. I first came down with mastitis (breast infection) and then a yeast infection (nipples infected). I myself had blisters on my breast. You can take some Tylenol to ease the pain and place warm compresses on them. ALso a new product that you can get at the drug stores are called Soothies. They can give you some comfort in the midst of the pain. Well I wish you the best. let us know how you get through this.

Hi I would check with your OBGYN. I had that problem and had thrush in my nipples. its kinda like a yeast infection that gets in your nipples. it can also be in your childs mouth. but definetly check with your doctor just in case. sore nipples is normal but not really blistering. hope that helps!

Call La Leche http://www.lllofaz.org/. This site is specifically for the Tuscon area. They're free & have lactation consultants on call. At 2 wks, it became extremely painful for me to nurse. I called them & gave them my symptoms. They told me I had "Thrush", and they were able to call in a prescription for me & my baby (cuz you pass it back & forth - mouth to nipple). It was a cream for me & liquid for my baby. She also recommended (& I highly recommend) "Grapefruit Seed Extract". Approx 5 drops 2-3 times a day in JUICE (cuz it tastes horrible & you need something acidic to cover up the taste). It's homeopathic for yeast infections, which is basically what thrush is. For a couple of days, I had to give formula every other feeding, just to give my boobs a break. If it IS thrush, I feel for you. It might be a blocked duct, but La Leche should be able to tell you. Good Luck & hope you start feeling better soon!

Two things that are important to remember--
1.Lanolin is infested with pesticides
2. Everyone has different sized areola. My baby could never fit even half of my areola in her mouth. Only if my baby was a giant could she fit the whole areola in her mouth, so don't use that to judge your infant's latch.

It sounds like those suggesting thrush may be right, but have a visit with a lactation consultant to check her latch.

I would definately call a lactation consultant. It sounds to me like she isn't latching on quite right. The lactation consultant can watch you feed her and show you how her latch needs to change. Also, Lansinoh lanolin is a lifesaver. You can pick it up at Walmart or drug stores. It heals really fast and it actually feels better immediately. And it's completely safe for baby. Hang in there, it gets better. Get some help to make sure the latch is right, and after awhile you'll be breastfeeding pain-free. Just hang in there and remember you're giving your baby the best you can give when it comes to food. And when it doesn't hurt anymore, it's a great bonding experience too. Best of luck!

Wow. Congratulations! I had some of that with the first baby especially. Contact your local La Leche League and get involved with them. It is possible that your baby's and your postures and positions may need to change somewhat, or that she is a bit overzealous with her sucking habits. Also, when she is asleep, just put your finger inside of her mouth to break the suction. Aloe gel might be a huge relief, as well. Until the affected area heals, you might want to pump the breast and just give her the other one.

Your little one may not be latching on correctly or she is not breaking suction before she pulls off. Dryness can occur but if you have a blister then that is a definite sign that she is not nursing correctly. If you continue to have trouble with it or are not sure if she is nursing correctly, I suggest you make an appointment with a Lactation consultant. In terms of treating your nipples, I personally use Lansinoh (there are a couple brands of nipple ointment out there). It is pure lanolin and gives immediate relief of the soreness (also works amazing on dry, cracked lips!). Also try rubbing some breast milk on your nipples throughout the day as it has natural healing properties to it.

buy the lansinoh lanolin, seems expensive but lasts forever! I nursed my first for only 7 weeks because the pain and blistering nipples was so bad. My daughter nursed for 10.5 months-thanks to lansinoh lanolin. If you can pump the owie breast and nurse off the good one. Also you need to make sure that she's latching on correctly, mouth wide open. You can always call La Leche League, they helped me too.

You might want to try changing positions holding the baby while nursing. There is also nipple balms out on the market that u can use to help releive the soreness.

i nursed both my children and went through the sore nipple phase; as long as you get her latched on properly, it will pass. we moved to a new house when my son was about 9 months old (by which time all nursing problems had passed), but he started waking more frequently (perhaps b/c of the move) and I would bring him to bed with ne and nurse in a lying down position so that I could get some rest. i developed a very painful blister; it was from him latching incorrectly and pulling while we were both falling back to sleep. w/ a little time and a lot of lansinoh i did get through it. i'm not sure where you are, but the lactation consultants at TMC (in Tucson)were/are amazing. they also have a breast feeding support group; you can take your baby w/ you, i'm sure sure about your older daughter. good luck to you; i know that it's painful. i know someone mentioned pumping, i nursed right through it.

I have two suggestions. Make sure that your daughter is not latching on wrong. The whole aroela should be in her mouth. She should not be pulling on the nipple with each suck. Try and get her with her tongue on the bottom of her mouth so that it is not sucking on the tip of your nipple. The other thing that may help is when you are finished nursing to express a few drops of milk and rub them on the nipple and then let your nipple air dry for about half and hour. It could be too moist and getting a fungus or an infection. I have nursed three and I found that until about 2 months old the 'ow' factor doesn't go away. The first 1 or 2 minutes of nursing are painful but then it doesn't hurt after that. If the pain is going on for more than 2 minutes of nursing then something is wrong. You may want to see your doctor or someone from La Leche. I also found that after 2 months it was no longer painful. So hang in there!

During breastfeeding of my third, I experienced the same....Make sure she is latching properly. Also put some neosporin on it to avoid infection. This is very important and was recommened to me by LaLeche. It will not harm the baby. LLL is very helpful in all areas of breastfeeding. Make sure your daughter botten lip is pooching out, this is a proper latch. Good luck!! Keep up the breastfeeding.

Its probably how she is latching on. Its also good to change positions when you feed her-don't always use the same position. You can use that lanisol ointment to help. Its normal around 7 weeks for your nipples to become sore from feeding.

laniolin works great for sore nipples and healing them too. but for now you should try just letting them air dry.

Hello. I agree with most of the earlier posters...my lactation consultant told me to be sure that when she latched on that we were "belly to belly" - so that the baby is lying on her side and that she isn't simply turning her head (pulling your nipples inside her mouth) - that is what I was doing wrong the first couple of days and it felt like razors when I nursed!! Correct position and that lansinoh ointment fixed it right up....until....a few months later when the pain returned accompanied by some blisters. My doctor confirmed that I had thrush in my nipples and my daughter had a mild case in her mouth. PAINFUL!! They gave me some cream to put on and it healed up quickly. I hope that you are healed up in no time and good luck!!
